Can anyone tell me the correct title of the song by Bob Clayton that Dylan "borrowed" ...whose gonna buy you ribbons when I'm gone?

It appears to be called "Who's Goin' To Buy You Ribbons When I'm Gone".

That's PAUL Clayton, Kendall. Bob Clayton is the Washington DC songmaker we often see at Nomad and NEFFA.

I should add that Bob Coltman has just found a publisher for his biography of Paul Clayton. It should be on the market early next year. I'll urge him to announce its availability on this forum.

On Ed Trickett's cd "Echo On the Evening Tide" it is titled "Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons"... a real fine version I might add.....Frank of Toledo

I don't think the song has been posted here.

Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons When I'm Gone
(Paul Clayton)

It ain't no use to sit and sigh now, darlin,
And it ain't no use to sit and cry now,
T'ain't no use to sit and wonder why, darlin,
Just wonder who's gonna buy you ribbons when I'm gone.

So times on the railroad gettin' hard, babe,
I woke up last night and saw it snow,
Remember what you said to me last summer
When you saw me walkin' down that road.

So I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road,
You're the one that made me travel on,
But still I can't help wonderin' on my way,
Who's gonna buy you ribbons when I'm gone?

Recorded by Paul Clayton on "Home-Made Songs & Ballads" (Monument 4001, c. 1960).
Obvious tune/lyrics source of Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right."

And the subject of an cause celebre and out-of-court settlement in the 1960s. My Paul Clayton biography (expected publication 2007) has some detail on the matter, including its roots in a song Paul collected called "Who's Gonna Buy You(r) Chickens When I'm Gone."

Ahh, the folk process.

Any relation to the song Harry Belafonte sang in the 50s--Scarlet Ribbons?       Tw

None what so ever, but it's a common mistake one makes.
