How many Fiddlers are there in England? And I don't mean the monetary fiddlers :-)

Of what standard, Villan? I know HOW to play a fiddle but can't play it very well! LOL!

I play a bit.
Do we all have to hold our hands up individually, or stand up in a meeting or something?
Quack!

Don't be quackers Geoff, just wondered, as I must admit to loving the fiddle, especially if it is played well with feel.

There was a discussion about this in another thread, though it might have been about historical times. And, do you mean fiddlers in total including classical, or just fiddlers who play fiddle tunes? I would guess more than a thousand folk fiddlers. but less than ten thousand(just doing orders of magnitude).
In Shetland, it's the entire population.

Folk Fiddlers.

Shetland is something else. Can't think of the main family up there, but there is a relative who lives in the same town as me, and he has all the handed down tunes(sheet music). He gave them to me once to have a look at. I showed them to Oaklet, who is a fine fiddler.

We had three seperate performers last Friday playing fiddle, and very good at that.

I love the fiddle also, especially if it is played well with reel.

I'm a fiddler, but not in England. I love Shetland fiddle tunes, and I'd love to see your collection of them. Is this possible? Please PM me.

How many fiddlers in England ? I'll tell you, too feckin many and most of them think they are Irish, if you get two in a session it works like moths round a flame, they appear in their feckin hundreds.

Is that England as in the UK?

In Shetland, it's the entire population.

Perhaps not entirly true - for some do play instruments other than the fiddle. But in the 12 years we lived there - the fiddle was taught to all school children. I trust that is still the case.

I think eric means fake oirish, everything in 6/8 and D and too fast. Usually found very late in the beer tent and even later on the campsite.

I was just interested to see who was in England, not becuase I didn't like any other fiddlers in the United Kingdom.

Fiddle players, certainly in England, seem to find comfort in numbers, but what countess richard said applies.

I actually play with two very fine fiddle players, one Scottish and one English, both female, but if any more arrive, they all end up playing to each other, non stop, too fast, oh and too Orish.

I've been playing for over 20 years now....started off being classically trained then moved on to folk...

I grew up in Yorkshire but now live in London...

OK let me ask a question here, and I am not sure if I can put in a way that expresses correctly what I mean as I am a non musician.

I have heard some lovely fiddle playing from various artists, but why oh why, do some of them (not all) have to show off by playing very fast tunes as if they want the whole world to know how good they really are. To me they don't do anything for me, but seem to get the rest of the audience in raptures.

Could it be the difference between a non musician who likes to here lovely music, and an audience musician who is in awe of the skills of the fiddler.

The reason I ask this, is that if you have a club like mine, where I would think at least half the audience or more is made up of non musicians who are there to listen to the lovely tunes and songs, then the artist can actually be working against themselves.

I hope nobody gets offended with what I have just said. I merely wish to know more.

What do you mean by fast? Does, say, Tommy Peoples play too fast for you? Sean Keane? I find (most) Irish sessions played (mostly) at a comfortable pace, with a nice variation of speed and rhythm. Some fiddlers (and other msuicians) go for a blast now and again, but are generally tolerated for a tune or two then hauled into line. Too slow and the session becomes plonking.

I also find some (not all) English/ mixed sessions very samey- a concentration on slower tunes (waltzes etc.), and definitely struggling when a fairly ordinary jig, or even more so, reel is played (still slowly). And what's worse, a decided hostility to anyone who wants to improve- see comments above about musicians "showing off". You wouldn't accuse a singer of "showing off" if they sang a song you couldn't dance to... would you?

At one Sidmouth I recall, there were 23 string players in the Radway including Dee de Witt on cello. Personnel included Flos Headford, Paul Burgess, Taz Tarry, Colin and Ruth Thompson, Glen Titmus, and (the late) Mick Brooks. I can add to that Gavin Atkin, Mary Barber, John Offord, Alan Lamb ...

All welcome at the Volunteer at Sidmouth this year, by the way!

With comments like that, who would bother with folk music. Probably quite happy to watch it die.

Hard to say Paul. Its that performer who knows they are really good, but still want to show everybody how good they really are i.e. flash gits :-)
Oh by the way, my comments were directed at folk singers who play fiddle.

Paul, my take on "too fast" is not a particular tempo - it's when the subtleties and nuances of the music get lost in the rush, and it comes out flat and either boring or hysterical. The first casualty is usually the decoration or the phrasing (or both), whereas the same tune at the same speed in the hands of a master fiddler is mesmerising. It's the difference between colour and black-&-white, two-dimensional & three. Hard to define in words, but everyone can recognise it when they hear it.

And in how many sessions do you get a Tommy Peoples or a Sean Keane or a Frankie Gavin? Too often it's just wannabees who haven't done their listening homework or put in the years of work, and simply go for the flash without the depth, the immediate results without the seasoning. It's not speed that bothers me, it's when there is ONLY that - as though the person has simply learned the dots and cranked them up as fast as possible. There's a lot of it about, unfortunately - all the more reason to pay heed to the fiddle greats and learn from them.

To answer the original question: as many as everywhere, ranging from too much to not enough (depends on the point of view).
