BS: Whats the Holes in CD's for then?

Plastic records needed a hole in the middle, to fit on the spindle of the record player, but cd players have a slot that they fit in, so waht are the holes in the middle of cd's for then?

"cd players have a slot that they fit in"

Ummm... no they don't... a CD is spun by fitting a 'spinner' into the centre hole... (gross! LOL)

I believe it is for driving them round and round at a controlled rate of speed, without which they could not be read. The centering and driving device on some CD players is a cone-and-cup combination that sandwiches the CD through the hole.

And also the picture on http://stuffo.howstuffworks.com/cd4.htm which shows the cup deal for the center hole. The CD has a variable rate of speed depedning where the reader is on the long spiral groove or series of bumps that makes up the data.

Presuming that the grooves on a CD (if indeed there are grooves?) and the laser?? works on the same principle as the old needle for LP's. Then, it is to be supposed that when it arrives at the hole in the middle, it stops!!

As pointed out above CD's work in essentially the same way that Records do in that the information is recorded sequentially as the disc revolves and read off in the same manner.

I recently acquired some dead CD ROM drives to obtain motors for making BEAM robots.
There are 3 Motors, one to rotate the disc, one to move the heads, and one to eject the CD.

The hole allows scratchy sounds and thk sounds to escape out the back of the player. That is why CD's are superior in purity of sound to LP's.

As I understand it, unlike with real records, the grooves in CDs aren't a spiral, they are concentric circles.

Holes are in the centre of our CDs so that extra laser light can be bled off the CD before it harms the information on it. The spinning of the disc pools the excess photons from the laser in the centre, where they are easily collected by the Tachyon Gremlins which reside in our CD players. They bale up the excess light bits and trade them to the Tachyon Sprites who live in our camera flash units in exchange for fingerprints collected off the bezels of the flash. It's a mutually satisfying trade arrangement, though it results in strangely appearing fingerprints on our CDs and red-eye effects on our photos, but that's just a couple of things we have to put up with in our technologically advanced world today.

Next question?

Skipper, unlike old time records, data recorded on a CD starts at the center and end at the outer edge.

McGrath, it is one spiral.

And the main purpose of the hole is for the spinning motor - it is also used for centering the CD in the drive mechanism.

Kevin:

From one of the How Do They Work links up above:

"A CD has a single spiral track of data, circling from the inside of the disc to the outside. The fact that the spiral track starts at the center means that the CD can be smaller than 4.8 inches (12 cm) if desired, and in fact there are now plastic baseball cards and business cards that you can put in a CD player. CD business cards hold about 2 MB of data before the size and shape of the card cuts off the spiral.

What the picture on the right does not even begin to impress upon you is how incredibly small the data track is -- it is approximately 0.5 microns wide, with 1.6 microns separating one track from the next. (A micron is a millionth of a meter.) And the bumps are even more miniscule..."

"what do they do with the holes when they remove them?"
really, joybell! why don't you THINK? look at any CD. it has a hole in it. the holes have not been removed: they have been INSTALLED. if you want to get a bag of holes, you have to find a hole retailer, or go straight to the hole manufacturer. and i think you'll find that they are not just useful in CDs. i've found hundreds of uses for them around the house. you may have to do a bit of shopping around, tho, to make sure you get good-quality holes. the shoddy ones wear out after a while, especially if they get a lot of wear.
o.p.

Hmmm Off to find a HOLE EARTH catalogue.
How do they install them in smoke then, Smarty-Pants? Where do they make holey smoke anyway. Holey ground - now I've seen that. You can install holes in the ground your ownself. I like to do that. Don't remember where I got the holes from beforehand though.
Then there's the mystery of "the hole in one". One what? What do they wrap holes in when you buy them?
                                        Still puzzled.

They wrap holes in the same material they use to contain the universal solvent.

The holes are there because without them it would make CDs look like donuts that have no holes: ridiculous. What's a donut with no hole for the love of Pete? It's just a stuffed pastry; a bun filled with jam or pudding, and IMO, that ain't a donut. Besides, when's the last time you even SAW a CD filled with jam? Oh, yeah, Pearl Jam, but like--anyway, I have lost my train.

Of thought. So, when the holes get centered, what stops the hole manufacturererers from making the holes square or triangular or dodecahedrononon shaped? Nothing! That's right, NOTHING. Same for Tim Horton. That's all I have to say about the Golden Age of Steam. Glad I got the train back on the road.

We have a number of CDs that over the years have had jam in their holes. If you are very careful it can be cleaned off without detriment to the contents so long as they don't insert it into the player. Insertion of jam covered toast is what caused the demise of the VCR so they invented DVDs which of course won't allow even a thin slice in. You will note that since Tescos started baking on the premises Dixons have had to withdraw all VCRs from the shelves!

The truth lies in the fact that the CD was invented by Phillips, a Dutch company. At that time, the Dutch used the Gilder as their currency, and was subdivided into Cents (or something similar). And a ten (or was it twenty, or even twenty five) cent coin fits perfectly into the hole - well, actually, the hole fits perfectly round the coin.

So the hole is for all these wealthy Phillips executives to carry their money in!

My buddy's pa-in-law had his own way of dealing with the season's leavings in the camp kybo. He claimed you needed to drop a roadkilled animal in there to get things working and broken down.
