BS: Official Mudcat Stupid Question Thread

27 Jul 04 - 01:02 AM (#1234493)
Subject: BS: Official Mudcat Stupid Question Thread
From: Bee-dubya-ell

So how many times has this happened to you? You post what you think is a perfectly reasonable question, only to be informed by at least a dozen people that your question either is unanswerable, has been answered a zillion times before, or is just plain stupid. And, furthermore, you are an idiot for asking the question.

Well, it's about time we had a place where we can ask stupid questions without having to put up with responses from smart-ass know-it-all pedants and this thread The Official Mudcat Stupid Question Thread (or TOMSQT [pronounced 'Tomsquat'] for short) is that place! It is intended as a repository for idiocy. You may ask any question you wish here, no matter how stupid, and anyone who doesn't like it can go piss up a rope. Of course, there's no guarantee that you'll get a straight answer, but that's the chance you take when you're an idiot.

And, just to save someone the trouble of having to point it out, yes, the idea for this thread is really a stupid idea. I freely admit it and anyone that wants to make an issue of it can go piss up the same rope as the other guys (or a different rope - I don't care). Hey, "The Mother of All BS Threads" is a stupid idea too and it's got over 4000 posts.

Now, my stupid questions:

Why are dogs just called "dogs" but cats are called "housecats"?

Is it proper to play John Prine's "Please Don't Bury Me" at a funeral?

Is AC DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" folk music? If not, would it be folk music if played on an accordion?

I've been told, by those who say they know, that NOTHING played on an accordion classifies as music of any kind.

I say they're wrong.

1. A housecat is a cat that lives inside the house and stays inside the house much of the time...maybe all the time. A stray cat or a barn cat doesn't do that. Some dogs are called stray dogs.

2. Who knows?

3. Good question.

Subject: RE: BS: Official Mudcat Stupid Question Thread
From: Blackcatter

First of all, The people who ask stupid questions are too stupid to use this "Official" thread.

To answer your questions which a hardly stupid:

House cats are called house cats, because until the later part of the 20th Century, few people kept cats inside their homes. They were workers who lived out by the barn (barncats) or in other out buildings.    Still today, many people keep cats around their houses, but not in them. It is pretty rare for that to be the case with dogs.

The song is entirely appropriate at some funerals. Not everyone is buried. In fact in the U.S. cremation continues to rise in popularity. Since my will says something similar to "Please Don't Bury Me," I can imagine that as a song my friends my chose to perform.

"Dirty Deeds" is not folk music. It is heavy metal/hard rock or something. The type of instrument it is played on would not matter. Generally speaking folk music (a topic hotly debated around here) is typically written by non-professional musicians or is of a style that uses accoustic instruments and follows some general structures that most people accept as "folk." As a big fan of AC/DC, I can assure you that it is NOT folk music.

Thanks for the thread.

My stupid question is this:

What makes this thread 'official'?

Bee-dubya-ell, if this thread's official, are you the official spokesperson for this thread? Can you practice, if necessary, plausible deniability? (I said plausible.)

Okay, that's 3 stupid questions. When you're stupid, you can't just ask only one.

Subject: RE: BS: Official Mudcat Stupid Question Thread
From: Metchosin

well, maybe wolves and coyotes are not called dogs because they aren't. But then again, a dog should probably, by rights, be called a wolf, because it is.

"In 1993, the wolf and dog were both determined to be Canis lupus, per the Code of International Commission on Zoological
Nomenclature and the American Society of Mammalogists. In other words, both wolves and dogs are the same species.
It is somewhat controversial in the scientific world whether dogs are now classified as an actual subspecies of wolf, or if they are simply con-specific (a
domestic variant of the wolf.) Therefore, the definition of a "hybrid being any offspring of two animals of two different species" is no
longer accurate to describe a wolf x dog cross."

How come if you multiply 1 by 0 you don't get 1 as an answer? If you have 1 apple and you don't do anything with it, ie. you multiply it nothing times, don't you still have your original apple?

Q. May I ask my three stupid questions ?
A. Yes. What are your other two questions.

****

A take on the multiply-by-zero issue:

Let                   a = b
Multiply by a:       a = ab
Subtract b:          a - b = ab - b
Factorise:            (a + b)(a - b) = b (a - b)
Divide by (a - b):    (a + b) = b
Substitute for a:    2b = b
=>                   2 = 1

QED !

Anyone spot the flaw(s) ?

Rap, these questions are not being asked on the MOAB because that thread is a repository for nonspecific BS. TOMSQT posts must be either questions or answers to questions. A MOAB post may be a question or an answer, but it may also be a recipe for oatmeal. Recipes for oatmeal are not allowed here unless one is able to phrase said recipe as a question. But why would anyone want to post a recipe for oatmeal anyway? Oatmeal sucks.

As to what makes this thread "official", I was sitting in my "office" when the idea came to me. It was a very "moving" experience.

Also - I keep hearing people complain that long threads are a pain to read because it takes too long to load them. Is there that many people who dont know about the "part 1,2,3,4," and the "descending" options, or are they just trying to be funny in a non-humerous way?

"Subtract b:          a - b = ab - b"

"Evaluated" is         0 = 0

The subsequent division is a "divide by zero."

Any fool knows that zero divided by zero can have any answer you want, depending on whether the bigger zero is on the top or on the bottom.

(n-1)*a = n*a a = 0

for n = 1

(n 1) = 1 1 = 0

(1 1) * a = a a = 0

For the same reason that 0! = 1 and not 0.

Clear?

You can - or at least on regular roads. There are comunities all over the U.S. that are "planned" in that they have shopping places tied to the residential areas as well as schools and the like. There are fancy golf carts that are owned by residents to drive on the streets so they don't use their cars for every little thing.

Schools have their hands tied to do with sex ed. In various parts of Canada, the schools took that on because it was not being taught at home (much the way schools began to show children how to take the bus or cross the streets at traffic lights). It just wasn't being done elsewhere so it defaulted to the school systems. However, you make a good point Blackcatter. I was in university at the age of 33 when I found out that conception and pregnancy are not the same thing. I turned to a teenage student beside me and said, "Did you know that?" He said no. So did the girl on my left.

Some schools have to be really careful about sex ed because the parents--who don't teach it to the kids--want only certain things taught to the kids. Easiest place I ever taught that aspect of Health 9 was in farm country. Most of my students knew about calving and breeding stock, so the fact people procreated in similar ways was no big deal. However, for city kids it's a whole other thing. If their view of sexuality comes from X-rated movies (and it seems there are lots of them now), then their view of sexuality is changed substantially.

Also, many teachers are embarrassed to teach it. (I often drop in for those classes and jump through the hoops with the kids. I find the kids take it better than many teachers.) And of course that only addresses the reproductive aspect, and not the emotional or the choices kids have to make these days. (There are some serious STDs out there, and some of them are deadly.) That said, y'all ain't alone in Florida.

Speaking of sex education, it wasn't until my son was born and my wife was breast-feeding him, that I learned some things about breasts and nipples. For one thing, I had always believed the breast milk came out of one tiny hole in the center of the nipple, just like on a plastic baby-bottle nipple. But no, it comes out of several tiny holes (I still don't know how many6? 8?) around the perimeter of the nipple. The center is just a knob for the baby to hang onto, I guess. (Plus...well, we won't go into that.) Also, nipples turn brown during pregnancy, and then gradually fade to pink again afterwards. Who knew?

Good for you, BC. Sex education has to be more about emotions and feelings and less about this goes here and that's what happens. Kinda like the difference between knowing how gears work and how to drive the car properly. I was reading on the 'cat a while back that some kids were involved with what has come to be called 'oral sex', and they didn't see it as being sex at all. Blew me away--pardon the expression. When I was a kid it was referred to as CSing and CLing. Times has changed. What I find that kids need to be told is that the act of sex is very emotional, and one of my arguments with kids is that people are generally not prepared for the emotions involved until they are much more mature than many are when they first get involved with someone. (That sentence didn't make a helluva lotta sense.) Basically, I'm up front with the kids and I say that 14 is too young. I don't suggest that there is a magic age, but I think many people will understand what I'm saying.

Why is it that the general term for most animals refers to the female,
cow (bull)
cat (tom)
sheep (ram)

... but it's dog, not bitch?

How does a luminous watch know when it's dark??

How does the snow-plough driver get to work ?

How does Teflon stick to the pan in the first place?

If it takes an hour to dig a hole, how long does it take to dig half a hole... even though the half hole's a whole half-hole, is it also a whole whole?

so, I shall digress...
If you stick a stock of liquor in your locker
It is slick to stick a lock upon your stock.
Or some joker (who is quicker)
Is gonna trick you of your liquor
If you fail to lock your liquor with a lock

Oops, that wasn't music...
"A tutor who tooted the flute
Tried to tutor two tooters to toot.
Said the two to their tutor,
"Is it tougher to toot, or
To tutor two tooters to toot?"

there, better.

Being from "over there", my wife is always correcting me on my English. She insists that the word "schedule" is properly pronounced as "shedule." She also reminds me that in the "proper" English alphabet, the letter Z is spoken as "Zed." So, here are some stupid questions:

Why isn't "school" pronounced "shool"?

And why is it "scheme" and not "sheme"?

Why is zebra not "zedebra", or "zoo" "zedoo"?
