BS: The Annual New Year's Possum Drop

There's an article in today's San Francisco Chronicle, that may shed some light on the doings of Cleigh, who hasn't been heard from in a while. The article begins:
"Brasstown, N.C. -- The lights are strung, the stage is set and Baby New Year is waiting in a cage, hissing.

Brasstown, once again, is ready for the Possum Drop.

Yes, the annual New Year's Eve Possum Drop, the one and only, inspired by the dropping of a certain illuminated ball 670 miles away..."
The URL is here.

Happy New Year all.

This is a great promotional idea for a small town, and I'm all for it. Hopefully Hollywood will get the idea to base a funny movie around the New Year's Possum Drop, and Brasstown will have its day in the sun.

Aw, come on, Ebbie! You know it would be more like a plop, plop, plopping sound!

"Annual Moose Dropping Festival:
Held the second weekend of July. Includes barbecue, a run/walk of 5 Km, a parade, music, game booths, entertainment and a moose dropping throwing contest. In addition, there are a softball tournament and a Mountain Mother Contest (fun event not to be missed). For more details call the museum at (907) 733-2487."

It's that "moose dropping throwing contest" that really lets you sling the s**t. Besides -- I'm certain you've seen the swizzel sticks.

I am visualizing an even dozen well put-together Aussie lasses in nothing more than god gave them when they arrived upon this earth (and a parachute) dropping from a light aircraft...

There's also bluegrass music, including the crowd-pleaser that goes, "Down in the darkness, much to my delight, there's five pounds of possum, in my headlights tonight."

Do we 'all got the lyrics to this 'un?

Oddly enough, moose droppings resemble rabbit droppings, only on steroids.

But whaddaya expect from a bunch of guys who can't wait fir New Years Eve so they can wear dresses and lipstick? We ain't talkin' no "Deliverance" quality mountian men here...

Note: To the good people of Brassville N.C. The last thing you want in this town is a movie crew. They make a lot of movies here in Pittsburgh and it's like having your street invaded by Visigoths. They will tow your cars, chop down your trees, and play frisbee on your roof.
Drop possums if you must, but don't let them make a movie in your town.

"Guess I'll have me a pint of old Possum Drop please?"

Update:
today's S.F. Chronicle reports, alas:

With just hours to go before the festivities, Clay Logan, host of the Possum Drop, said he'd received a call from a national animal rights organization threatening to sue him for animal cruelty if he used a live possum.

"So I found me a dead one," Logan said.

As fireworks popped and lovers kissed, the dead possum swung from a Citgo sign. And as the festivities ended, many revelers trudged away, saying their small town fun had been spoiled by big-city ways.

"Hell of a way to start the New Year, saluting a dead possum," said Steve Barringer, a blacksmith.

Actually Bundaberg Rum has a running series of TV ads that involve the white polar bear mascot doing "cool things" - one is the girls putting up a tent under a tree, and the guys giving them the "Drop Bear" story - when the polar bear drops out of the tree onto the tent, then gives the guys the little wink and wave as the girls run screaming...
