Seeking info on Samuel Charters

Subject: Samuel Charters in Scotland 1960
From: GUEST,RA

I read (in Michael Gray's book about Blind Willie McTell) a passing reference to American musicologist Samuel Charters spending much of the year 1960 in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland. I found another passing reference elsewhere to Charters having been at the Edinburgh Festival that year. Does anybody know anything more about Charters' time in Scotland in 1960 - why he was there, with whom was he spending time (perhaps even with Hamish Henderson?). Thanks.

Looks like he may have been doing field recordings.

Charters produced an LP for Folkways of his field recordings in the Borders. He had been given names by Hamish Henderson, including Willie Scott and his family. There is a new review of his blues film on the Musical Traditions site. Wikipedia has a lot to say about Charters. He also issued 2 LPs of Irish field recordings on Folkways.

There is a lovely tale told about Sam Charters visiting Willie Scott. Charters set up his recording machine in Willie's home and then held up the plug, asking where there was a socket. Apparently Willie, who had silently watched Charters setting up his machine, shook his head before telling Charters that they did not have electricity there.

Thanks people! Yes, I know there is a Wikipedia page about Samuel Charters - but it doesn't say anything about his time in Scotland in 1960. That's why I asked here. I thought that's what this forum was for! Thanks again for your thoughts people, especially for the Willie Scott anecdote.

There is a Sam Charters facebook Group/page entitled The Legacy Of Sam Charters. Loads of interesting posts and I'm sure one of the contributors can help you.
