I am completely biased (and a bit sad) but I just love this. Annachie Gordon (Child 239) - live at Beverley Folk Festival last weekend. Wendy Arrowsmith - Annachie Gordon Just thought I'd share! |

28 Jun 11 - 11:32 PM (#3178074) Subject: RE: Annachie Gordon Video From: ChanteyLass Absolutely wonderful! I am so glad you put this on YouTube and posted a clicky here. I have been craving traditional music. I had the CD that Wendy referred to, but it disappeared during a 3-month hospitalization in 2003. All I came home with was the empty case. I have other recordings of the song, but I don't think any of them are a cappella. I see that you have put other videos of Wendy on YouTube and will be listening to them as soon as possible. |
29 Jun 11 - 12:07 PM (#3178366) Subject: RE: Annachie Gordon Video From: GUEST,Banjiman "and you who are her maidens, come loosen up her gown" I still think that is the most disturbing line I've ever heard in a traditional (or possibly any) song. ...... given the context of a father preparing his daughter for rape. Gives me the shivers! |

01 Jul 11 - 02:22 AM (#3179539) Subject: RE: Annachie Gordon Video From: YorkshireYankee I am indeed female (and married, too, BTW). I'm (usually) in Sheffield -- so not too far from York -- but am in the US visiting family at the moment, so the swim is more than I'm up for right now; maybe another time... A lot of folks seem to think Yorkshire Yankee sounds like a guy's nick. I picked it because I'm a Yank living in Yorkshire, so it seemed a logical choice (& had a bit of a ring to it, which I liked). (Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I thought it might be a good idea to explain things more fully...) Cheers! P.S. "Guest", who are you? (Just curious...) |
01 Jul 11 - 03:26 AM (#3179551) Subject: RE: Annachie Gordon Video From: GUEST,Banjiman Well MRS Yankee, please accept my full and sincere apologies for changing your gender. I'm really quite embarrassed now. Hopefully we might catch you somewhere down the road! Paul |
01 Jul 11 - 03:42 AM (#3179559) Subject: RE: Annachie Gordon Video From: Will Fly Well, I have to say that I'm not generally a great lover of Child Ballads - I prefer 2 minute long bits of fluff from the 1920s (just my attention span) - but this performance was beautiful - superb. Well done, Mrs. Wendy Arrowsmith Banjiman!! |
03 Jul 11 - 05:54 AM (#3180595) Subject: RE: Annachie Gordon Video From: GUEST,Banjiman Thanks will. That's a real compliment from you. Funny actually, the thing we're just putting finishing touches to now is "Wildwood Flower", definitely a bit of fluff, definitely 1920's (well The Carter Family version) ..... and difficult to stretch to 2 minutes! |
