Shanties in Liverpool: May 2011

After the resounding success of the inaugural Easter Maritime Festival in Ellesmere Port, the focus of attention moves across the water to the other bank of the Mersey. Despite the cancellation of the Liverpool Boat Show there will still be a Shanty Festival in Liverpool over two weekends according to the Bitter End website.

There will be a daily schedule of performances from 11am to 6pm in and around the Albert Dock on 29 & 30 April, and 1 & 2 May, and again on 7 & 8 May. The line-up apparently includes Armstrong's Patent, Staten Island Ferrymen (Hughie Jones and Trans-Atlantic friends), The Boat Band, Kimber's Men, The Young Un's, Monkey's Orphan, Richard Grainger and the Steel River Band, Portsmouth Shanty Men, Liverpool Packet, Four 'n' Aft, Trim Rig & a Doxy, The Liverpool Shanty Kings, Three Sheets to the Wind, Monkey's Fist and The Liverpool Crew.

There should also be evening singarounds at the Baltic Fleet.

It sounds very promising, and I hope to get to some of the events. I hope Derek and Julia can be persuaded to supply more of the sunshine they laid on in Ellesmere Port!

Coming right up this weekend, I see. Bit of a stretch to get there from Maine but I'd love to hear what happened.

It's all a bit confusing. It mentions the Shanty Festival on both weekends but doesnt say who's on what weekend or whether everyone is on both weekends if you see what I mean. I shall ask around! Lots of activities either way.

I have visited the sites of several of the listed artists and can only see them being booked for the first of the 2 weekends-how odd!

As I haven't seen much publicity for this event I was hoping that this thread might prompt one of the organisers to give a bit more information about who is appearing when and where. I'm quite happy to just turn up and listen to whoever is performing on the day as I live nearby anyway, but I would like to catch the Young Uns and the Boat Band if at all possible.

Matthew - you are assuming that the organisers are Mudcat visitors / perusers / contributors and I don't think that they are.

You're quite right Blowz; it was a big assumption on my part but usually I find that by posting here I can sometimes attract the attention of somebody who can get in touch with somebody who knows somebody else who knows something and maybe they'll get back to me sometime!

No but lots of the artists visit Mudcat so there is a vague hope that a contact can be made I suppose.

I went to the Baltic Fleet tonight. Some very good singing and great songs, although hard to hear the talky part from the back, so I didn't really hear who was who. The guy who sang Jolly Bold Robber did a great job, I thought.

I have to say, because there was talk of a singaround, I was expecting it to be a little more of an actual singaround. That's not to criticise what was done, it was definitely a not-especially-formal celebration in which we heard a variety of the people involved with the shanty festival. Nevertheless, when something's advertised as a singaround, you do kind of expect more of a general involvement, going around the room and listening to a range of different people, and that's not what we got. It was more of what I'd call an informal concert; people standing behind a PA (necessary because of the noise level), with performers and audience congregating as separate groups.

Hope that doesn't sound too much like I'm having a gripe - just wanted to comment that perhaps singaround wasn't the best term to use.

I went to the Baltic Fleet for a pie and a pint (excellent as usual) and was pleasantly surprised to be asked to give a couple of songs. As far as I could tell, Pete Hayselden (Shanty Jack) only had the singers who turned up to choose from, ie no pre-set list. If you had made yourself known to him as a singer, I'm sure you would have had your chance - as inded did our enthusiastic Swedish/ Norwegian (never did establish which!) friend who wasn't afraid to show his appreciation for an excellent range of music and songs. Sorry I can't get back for more.

Ah, you're probably correct in that it was my own failure to grasp the protocol. I'm actually not all that experienced in these kind of things - I've only been to a handful of different singarounds/ events and I guess I don't know when it's appropriate and inappropriate to stick your oar in. I think because I had an idea of this being a singaround (and now I think about it, perhaps it wasn't widely billed as such) my understanding was that it would have been a little more informal and open in invitational style.

But I'd like to reemphasise that I did enjoy going, and joining in choruses etc. - I'm not around the next couple of days but I will probably turn up again next week, even if it is the same kind of set up, because the music was very good.

Also, the Baltic Fleet is a great pub!

The Baltic Fleet is a gem - now even more surrounded by unsympathetic high-rises than it was on my last visit a few years back - but still maintaining its reputation for great beers and great atmosphere.

We couldn't make it down there, unfortunately. For me, I prefer, by far, to hear my shanties in the atmosphere of a good boozer, where I can feel the vibrations in my belly - LOVE the Baltic Fleet and much prefer that sort of setting to outdoor stages usually.

I got there for a few hours on the Friday, and for the day on Monday, and I thought the whole festival on the waterfront was a great success with the public. I enjoyed hearing shanties sung aboard a real ship by Bernie Davis with the Liverpool Packet. I didn't get to any of the sessions in the Baltic Fleet so I can't comment on what went on there, other than to say that the Baltic Fleet is indeed a real gem, and I'm sure there were some fine performances. It was great to finally get to hear the Young'uns perform although I felt it was a shame that they had to flood the pit to protect them from their fans! :-)

There's more to come this weekend, including an Arts & Crafts Fair;- see this website for more information On the Waterfront.

Anyway congratulations to Bernie Davis and everyone else involved in organising this, and to Liverpool City Council for supporting it.

Matthew

I went over for a couple of hours on the final day this afternoon, and was in time to catch the Boat Band perform on the floating stage in Salthouse Dock. There had been some heavy showers earlier on, but it brightened up a lot in the afternoon. The Boat Band naturally played both of the tunes known as the Liverpool Hornpipe, and finished their set with 'Sloop John B' performed very faithfully to its Bahamian origins. As they sang the canal barges which had been moored in the dock began a series of manoeuvres around the stage which was a lovely touch.

Once again, well done to the City Council and the organisers!

Managed to get down there on Saturday,( in Upton previous w/e) bit wet about lunch time but did clear up for the afternoon. Plenty of action all around and more people than I would have expected with the change in weather. Great day. Well done Bernie and gang. Good to see Geoff Speed cruising round!!
