BS: alison needs your good thoughts

31 May 10 - 06:46 PM (#2918014)
Subject: BS: alison needs your good thoughts
From: alison

OK well thats not entirely true, it is my husband who needs them.

I know there are people here who don't like this sort of thread - so if that is you please don't bother reading any further......

I haven't been around for a while in the threads although I do pop in and have a quick look every so often......the last time I asked you all to do your "stuff" was when my sister was very ill (she's keeping very well now - thanks).

After losing a lot of weight and now becoming very jaundiced Mark has been admitted to hospital and it is looking like it is not going to be something pleasant, he has a major scan and exploratory laparoscopy today...... and I'm sure is dreading the outcome although putting a brave face on it,

our two teenage kids know he is sick but just not "how" sick..........

it is very easy to slip into the negative thoughts (doesn't help when you're a nurse either!!)

anyway........ I would be grateful if you would all pray, meditate, light candles and do all those other wonderful things you do.....

thanks

The Tale of My Floof Cat

Perandy the floof cat and I were introduced when I was 7 and he was 6 weeks old. We became close friends almost immediately. By the time I was 13, we spent most of our time together. He napped on my homework, slept with me in my bed, followed me around the house.

That summer he had jaundice. The vet said he had a tumor on his liver. The vet said he might live 6 months.

Well Perandy lived six months. Then he lived 11 years. He was not quite 18 when he died from a gum infection.

Moral 1, sometimes doctors are mistaken.
Moral 2. It's important to floss.

Hi Alison,

I just finished 6 cycles of chemo. Whew. I can imagine it's not easy to watch and truth be told, it's not easy to go through. One thing to keep in mind is that the body is an AMAZING AMAZING thing.....the chemo knocks you down but the body will struggle as best it can to get back up. Each chemo combination is different so I don't know exactly what he will go through but you will find that it's pretty similar each time. I was told that the only thing that gets worse is the feeling of being tired...that increases with each treatment. It's a definite adjustment for him and for you.

Sometimes it felt like the part of me that is ME would go away for a few days....lost in the chemo fog I suppose but I ALWAYS ALWAYS knew that my husband was here for me and that he was doing his best to understand and help me maintain as much NORMAL in my life as I could manage. He never has been (and still isn't) frustrated with me when I just could NOT do something even though it made extra work for him.

Tips to make things easier: Chemo gives your taste buds a run for their money making things taste horrible. Sour candy....really sour candy (I preferred sour Jolly Ranchers) seem to get some of that chemo taste out of my mouth. Plan ahead as much as you can. I don't know how much time you have between treatments but mine were 3 weeks apart. I'd spend a week preparing for what I KNEW would be coming with the chemo aftermath. In a way, getting ready helped me deal a bit better with things as I felt like I had some control. Talk to as many people as you can or that he can. You will find people in the chemo centers are like members of a very exclusive club....one that wants to see each other through and will share secrets to managing the daily icks of chemo. ALWAYS call the chemo center if he is in pain or nauseous. My oncologists told me there was no reason for me to be in pain (although I sometimes was because I didn't want to be drugged out of my gourd ALL the time...it was a choice I made....be aware of what was going on in my life and be in pain or take pain meds and be in space...both have their place in my opinion). I had Zofran for nasuea and for me, it was an AMAZING drug that killed the nausea in it's tracks. I never did throw up. Let's see...what else. Ummmm....get in all the protein he can manage. Greek yogurt is very high in protein without having to eat a ton of food if he just doesn't feel like eating. It's like 15 grams in a cup or so. Also, both of you should be washing your hands obsessively. Ask his doctor what days his immune system is most fragile...there is a pattern and they can really tell you which day it will be. For me, it was days seven through ten after each treatment. I was and still am ridiculous about washing my hands....haven't had communion at church for almost six months...I just can't take that risk.

I'm sure there's more. THE BIGGEST thing for me was KNOWING that my husband and mom would be there for me no matter what....I cried A LOT and they would listen or hug me...not try to talk me out of it...they just were there. Sometimes I just needed Pete to curl himself around me...there were times where I felt like I couldn't have him close enough....I felt safe with his arms around me and maybe that will be the same in your relationship too. Chemo and all the medical things floating around him are scary...there's no way around it. I also found a LOT of support here. I wrote a lot and tried to take in what people had to share.

One of the best pieces of advice I got was from a friend who has stage four colon cancer. She said this to me one day when I was boo hooing. Look. You have 3 options. You can go through this and be happy and do your best to find fun along the way. You can go through this and be miserable and resist it one hundred percent of the time OR you can do nothing and die. What's your pick? It's blunt, I know and for that I'm sorry....but for me, I needed to hear that, I needed the reality of it and I needed it spelled out to me in those simple terms.

PM me anytime and know that I am keeping you both in my prayers.

Lots of love,

Michelle

Today I received a mysterious parcel from the USA.

It was a beautiful hand crocheted (quite sure that isn't spelt right)shawl with a note saying that is was a "mudcat hug". I was absolutely blown away.

It is just amazing that someone I have never met, who lives on the other side of the world, would have been so thoughtful about someone else who they barely know ............. its amazing how close a love of music can bring people ........... (Max - it has been said before but this is a great little community you have here)

thank you very much Jacqui.C for your amazing thoughtfulness & kindness.

Mark has finished his first set of chemo - & with a bit of swapping around of drugs he seems to have most of the side effects under control. So he has a week off before the next round.

Jacqui has a great way of sending stealth shawls. And they bring such magic and goodwill with them! There are a couple of other Mudcat crochet and knitting folks, but her hands must just fly over the crochet hook.

You are lucky, and blessed by the Mudcat community. This is very good energy directed your way. If you haven't visited it, you might want to visit LilyFester's cancer and chemo thread. It will bring tears of joy to your eyes. :-)

Mark had his check up scan about a week ago - the chemo has shrunk the tumour by 25% which is absolutely fantastic, the doctors and Mark (needless to say) are thrilled............ so the plan is now another 2 months chemo and reassess with a view to surgery.

keep up the good work!

just a quick update - in the last scan the tumour is too small to measure, (woo hoo!!!) so the plan is now 5-6 weeks of radiotherapy then surgery (to make sure it can't come back) in Feb.

the docs have not been in this position before - the new treatment is working very well. needless to say everyone is very relieved.

here's hoping mark copes with the radiotherapy as well as he coped with the chemo.

thanks for all of your support - keep up the good work

From: alison

Hi everyone

could really do with some good thoughts again.
unfortunately this time the news isn't so good.

Mark decided to go back to Ireland and see his family in January - while he was there he got very sick and ended up in hospital. He just couldn't keep any food down.

I managed to get him back to Australia - watching him steadily worse - by the time we got to Singapore he was in so much pain he ended up in a wheelchair - got him back to Sydney and within 3 hours he was admitted to hospital again here.

and he has been in hospital every since the end of January.

when they opened him up to try to do the surgery - they found that the cancer had spread to his bowel - so they closed him up again. since then the doctors have tried everything they can think of but it looks like the nerve supply just isn't working for the area below the stomach - hence fluids (that is all he can have) get as far as there, gathers for a while, then he vomits.

now he has a tube draining his stomach contents into a bag.

a few days agao they told him there is nothing more they can do - and are taking down the fluids and he is coming home for me to look after as is his wish. He just wants to get back to the kids for whatever time he has left.

Ryan & Shannon are taking it very hard - and I know it is going to be really difficult to watch their dad get even weaker.

telling them that there was nothing more that could be done is probably the toughest thing I have ever had to do

so please, pray, light candles and do the good stuff you do - I just don't want him to suffer

thanks for listening

alison

Fair One, I am aching more than I can describe for you and yours. I would give anything to be of some sort of assistance. The Blessing and the Curse of the internet is that we become close to a world wide community.. When we make friends, often they are far away and all we can offer is our thoughts. I offer you, Mark and the kids my thoughts of love, and of understanding as you walk this part of the trail.

If all of life is a lesson, then we need to understand that lessons and the gaining of wisdom are to prepare us for the next thing. And so it is now. These passages are from Anam Cara by O'Donohue.

Some nights stay up 'til dawn as the moon sometimes does for the sun.
Be a full bucket, pulled up the dark way of a well then lifted out into light.
Something opens our wings, something makes boredom and hurt disappear.
Someone fills the cup in front of us, we taste only sacredness.

and finally to Mark:

May you be peaceful and happy and in the presence of those who really care for you.
May your going be sheltered and your welcome assured.
May your soul smile in the embrace of your anam cara (soul friend)

You will be given many moments to treasure, alongside the painful ones. The treasured moments are the ones which will remain and make you all able to think back on this time with love, affection....and..believe it or not, gratitude. I'm so glad Mark made it over to Ireland to see his family, as someone mentioned above...and that he made it home to you and the children too, Alison. I held my Father's hand as he took his last breath, and I realise now how blessed I was to have been given that situation, even though at the time I could never have imagined that to be true.

He's surrounded by Love and that will see you all through this sad time.

We never truly lose those whom we love.

Much love and peace to you all

thank you all so much - your support means so much. as many of you know from personal experience it is wonderful just to know that someone is thinking about you - when you are doing it tough

Mark is getting weaker each day - spending more time asleep.
the dificult stuff is that life has to keep going on - the kids are in "big" years in school (they are 17 & 15) - but the assignments etc still have to be handed in - and they are under immense pressure - the school knows and is doing what it can.

in answer to someones question - the extended family is in Ireland (thank god for skype) - but there are friends and support nurses helping out.

I am coping ok at the moment - not sure how I'll go when he gets more difficult to look after - but I'll do as much as I can for as long as I can. but the doubt is there as to "am I going to be able to do this?" and that can be a bit scary at times.

I may not post as often as I check in on this thread - but believe me I am checking in, and I thank you all again for the kind words and thoughts
