Lyr Req: Christian Island (Gordon Lightfoot)

From: GUEST,Dave Hunt

Well over 30? years ago I knew someone who sang a song - of which I can only recall bits -

'Sailing down the summer wind, I've got whiskers on my chin, and I like the mood I'm in....

She's a good old ship and she'll make the trip...across the waves...?...shining.when the summer ends we'll return again to the lee of Christian? Island

Tall and stong she sails along, I call her silver heels, and I know just how she feels,
She's a good old boat and she'll stay afloat, across the waves etc

I'd love to find it again. My daughter (who is now in her 40s!) loved to hear me sing the bits I knew and recently asked me if I remembered it. I'm sure some kind 'catter will post the words right away!

Possibly Louden Wainwright 111 ??

Nope. As pdq says, try Gordon Lightfoot.

CHRISTIAN ISLAND
(Gordon Lightfoot)

I'm sailing down the summer wind
I've got whiskers on my chin
And I like the mood I'm in
As I while away the time of day
In the lee of Christian Island
Tall and strong she dips and reels
I call her 'silver heels'
And she tells me how she feels
She's a good old boat and she'll stay afloat
Through the toughest gale and keep smilin'
But for one more day she would like to stay
In the lee of Christian Island

I'm sailing down the summer day
Where fish and seagulls play
Put my troubles all away
And when the gale comes up I'll fill my cup
With the whiskey of the highlands
She's a good old ship and she'll make the trip
From the lee of Christian Island

Tall and strong she slips along
I sing for her a song
And she leans into the wind
She's a good old boat and she'll stay afloat
Through the toughest gale and keep smilin'
When the summer ends we will rest again
In the lee of Christian Island

When the summer ends we will rest again
In the lee of Christian Island

I listened to the song on Gord's Gold II and made corrections, but there are better lyrics at http://www.gordonlightfoot.com/Lyrics/ChristianIsland.txt.

My all-time favourite album of his. (I think I have it on vinyl.)

It's good, pdq, but the loving cup goes only to those who actually post lyrics in a minute. Sorcha, Pene Azul, and one other person made that record, I believe. I think my best was three minutes, but I always feel a compulsion to make sure the lyrics are correct. gordonlightfoot.com says the song came out in 1972. I found it on Gord's Gold 2, but I'm sure that's not the original album.

gordonlightfoot.com also indicates that Christian Island is in Georgian Bay, which is part of Lake Huron, on the Ontario side of the lake. I was guessing it was in the South Seas, and that it had something to do with the H.M.S. Bounty. Except near the Bruce Peninsula, Georgian Bay seems pretty shallow - is there good sailing there?

I am pretty sure the album was his 'Don Quixote' vinyl.

Don Quixote it was.

Ain't it great to have people like Gordon Lightfoot and Doc Watson so everybody can agree on something. Smile.

I LOVE that album. Lightfoot did much of his best writing on that one, imo. And Doc is simply a gift to the world. Smiles back to you, pdq.

I've never sailed there, Joe, (nor anywhere else for that matter), but each year for the past 24 years there has been a sailing regatta there.

It's been many, many years (I was in seventh grade), when I was up near Midland (near Christian Island), but what I remember is a lot of grass (or something green) growing out of the water of the bay in that area. I was on the Georgian Bay side of the Bruce Peninsula much more recently, and that looked like a wonderful place for sailing (some terrific lighthouses, too).
