Tech: Smartphone vs iPhone

Not much time left and thinking of getting my son one or the other for Christmas. Can anyone help me decipher what one has that the other doesn't or which is a better idea or better deal?

Not a subject on which I can offer much informed comment, but a recent "review" at 12 Notable Smartphones may be of some (rather slight) help with the smartphone choices that are popular (this week).

David Pogue, the technology reviewer for the New York Times has written a lot about smart phones, comparing the various new designs as they come out (on various companies). I know he has often compared them to the iPhone, but he himself didn't buy the iPhone until a couple of months ago.

Pogue's blog has the back issues. You might want to browse through the last 6-9 months of his posts, you'll find quite a bit. His reviews are clear and also witty, so it's easy reading.

iPhone has the marketing right. I would doubt it has all the technology right. It would run counter to experience. It is the Betamax/VHS race all over again. Purchaseable software was the key then, and it is now.

The real problem with smart phones is that they can be hacked remotely by methods more methods than yer average PC: WiFi, Bluetooth, on-line and the Apps that demand on-line automatically. Did we ever learn anything from history?

Apple are no more immune than anyone, and like MS on the PC if they are the biggest target - they will be the one to get the most attention from miscreants.

Just like the PC you have to be wary of the invisible and Virus and Firewall type Apps are out there to protect you.

Plus ca Change.

I have been using an iPAQ for over 3 years, and it does all I would evr wanr.
It's a PDA,GPS, come phone. It runs Windows Mobile, and I find it pretty indispensible

I have been happy with the iPhone. If you do get one get the one with more memory.

Got him an iPhone. Wow, now I want one... why did I bother with an aircard for my laptop when I could just do it all on my "phone"??
