From: devonleger

Hi there,
We're trying to figure out the lyrics to Lead Belly's Corn Bread Rough. That's the song he played on his windjammer (accordion). Here's what we have so far:

Jawbone eat and jawbone talk, jawbone eat you with a knife and fork.

Way down yonder by.................................the people done awake (gonna wait?) till the sun go down.

Corn bread rough and corn bread tough, ain't God almighty got corn bread 'nuff.

Old little lady.........................., ..........come along and broke her back.

...............in law,...........coming back with a broken jaw.

Thanks,
Devon Leger

This missing bits seem to be:
...by Jail Bird (but it sounds like 'Jay Bird') Town, the people don't wait... / Old lady laid in a forest shank, hog came along and broke her back.../ Hog said (something) that's against the law, Hog came back with a broken jaw...
Well I suppose with a song like that, you can sing whatever fits the occasion!

Here's what I think I hear:

Jawbone eat and jawbone talk,
Jawbone eats with a knife and fork.

Way down yonder by Jaybird(?) town,
The people don't work till the sun goes down.

Corn bread rough and corn bread tough.
Thank(?) God almighty got corn bread 'nuff.

Old hen laid [i.e. laid an egg] in a boiler stack.
Frog(?) come along and broke her back.

[The samples I listened to didn't include the last verse.]

Im looking for the full lyrics, but this part I heard him sing. Year 1990, he was 85, black man, blue eyes, slept on my couch in college.

"cornbread rough, biscuits tough, thank god almighty, we ain't got enough, have mercy miss percy, hold down Beethoven."
