I've become suddenly hooked on listening to audiobooks on a Shuffle. The first was The Shining, which lasted me through about 20 bus journeys and walks to work. Now I'm into a Jeeves book.

But damn the Sunday Times - they put Charlotte's Web on two CDs in one paper, and then promised the third in the next week's paper. And the person who gave me his two CDs hadn't realised there was another one to come - and now it's too late. I'll never know what happened.

I don't do eBay - you have to pay through PayPal, and they said on their inception that they would give the details of all customers to the US government, if I remember rightly.

Your local public library should be a good source for audio books, and they're free!

I work in a public library and I've become downright addicted to audio books -- the only downside is that I don't listen to as much music as I used to!

The beauty of audio books is that they can be a great help to 'reluctant' readers. I have never been able to 'sit' through a whole one, but if there comes a time I need to completely take in all the info in the book, I'll read it, then listen, then listen again.

audiobooksforfree.com

Free downloads in poor sound quality, but also your choice of paid downloads at sound quality you can handle. BIG inventory.

I use the freebies. Once you get used to them and a narrator's style, they're not so bad.

The whole L. Frank Baum Oz series is in there. With a GREAT narrator, even at free sound quality.

Charlotte dies in the end? But the guy who gave me the two-CD set says "As far as I know, the whole book is in there - Charlotte died in the end, anyway."

So what's on the third CD?

I tried the freebies but it was like listening to a kid reading in school, that dull drone.

The Shining is what got me hooked, and the reader is suuuuuperb. Campbell Scott, I think.

Any recommendations for good audiobooks?

My mum loved reading especially in bed. I bought some audiobooks for her when she was very ill in bed and too weak to hold a book. She really enjoyed them.

I'm listening to one of the Rex Stout Nero Wolfe mysteries now. I recently listened to some Agatha Christie Poirot mysteries, read by David Suchet (who plays the character in the most recent series). It has been my observation that the author is not always the best person to read their own work. With the exception of Louise Erdrich, who reads as beautifully as she writes.

One of my favorites that I've listened to more than once is To Kill a Mockingbird (the version recorded by Sally Darling is marvelous). And an author like William Faulkner who sometimes confounds readers with his punctuation comes to life in recorded books.

At audiobooksforfree, "Benita." Good pirate stories there, too.

Oh, I forgot to mention. I pick mine up at the library. I've been experimenting with loading them (when they're in CD version) into my mp3 player. They are deleted when I finish listening to them. It works except when one skips and then I wish I had the text to read to see what I missed.

I'm curious as to what you think the US government might do when they discover that you bought an audiobook of Charlotte's Web?

I've never used PayPal on eBay. Anyone I've bought items from will accept money orders. It takes a little longer because the money order must reach the vendor before the goods are shipped to me, but I'm not usually in a great hurry.

I just don't want them having my details, ragdall. None of their business. I'm not a citizen of their country, and don't really want anything to do with them.

With audiobooksforfree.com, a lot of the books are now public domain with texts available online to check things you miss in the recording. I did that a lot with the Oz books (such as at Project Gutenberg thanks to a Mudcatter's tip), just because the characters are so interwoven between stories it's good to check certain details that slip past quickly.

Stephen King has a good article

in his Entertainment Weekly column, where he recommends 10 audiobooks.

They're excellent for long drives and beat the heck out of chasing radio stations. Many Truck stops have them and some will exchange.
