Cheers Eliza!
These days if I think of A Four-Legged Friend I find it hard to stop, like spelling 'banana'. A one-two-three-four-five-six-seven legged.. Oh no, that's not right, is it?
Too silly.
Uncle Mac used to play some gems. I only wish he'd never included Sparky's Magic Piano. Yeccchhh!

I used to adore the song 'A Four-Legged Friend' sung by Roy Rogers. I don't think it was from any children's programme though. It was often on Uncle Mac's Children's Favourites on radio.

So when I can only see the grey
Of a sad and very lonely day
That's when I softly sigh
On white horses, snowy white horses,
Let me ride awaaaaay...

Being a romantically inclined teen at the time, that really chimed in with my world view. Sad, innit....

In the Philadelphia area when I was a kid there was a show called the Gene London show. For part of it Gene would tell a story while drawing it on a big pad of paper. He'd introduce the segment by singing:

Let's pretend that it's story time and I'll tell a tale to you,
I'll tell you a tale of make believe, and all your dreams will come true.
And when the story's over, and when we've reached the end,
We'll live happily ever after -- where?
In the land of "Let's Pretend."

I ate it up!

"happy birthday happy happy birthday this is your day to have a lot of fun"
This is part of the birthday song sung by Heck Harper on his afternoon kid show - was it Cartoon Corral? - which was out of Portland, OR in the 60's. The theme song was,
"Come a-runnin', bring your pal,
To the (new?big?) Cartoon Corral.
Clutch Cargo, Dick Tracy and Mister Magoo,
Felix and Popeye will be along, too...."
That's all I got; the last couple of lines or so are pretty fuzzy.

The birthday song went:
"Happy birthday, happy, Happy birthday,
This is your day to (or 'so') have a lot of fun.
Happy birthday, happy, Happy birthday,
This is your day, until the night is done.
Blow out the candles on your cake and make a wish,
And we'll serve everybody's favorite dish (Happy birthday, happy)
Happy birthday, happy, Happy birthday,
This is your day, so have a lot of fun"

Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen,
Robin Hood Robin Hood, with his band of men,
Feared by the bad, loved by the good,
Robin Hood, Robin Hood, Robin Hood.
(preceded by a fanfare and a terrific THWACK! of an arrow hitting a tree trunk)

White horses

On my horses let me ride away,
To a world that seems so far away,
Let me run, to the sun.
To a world my heart can understand,
It's a gentle warm and wonderland,
Far away, stars away,
Where the clouds are made of candyfloss and the days are long,
When the the stars are gone we'll race to meet the dawn,

(Dont remember this line)

Of a sad and very lonely day that's when I softly sigh,
On my horses snowy, white horses let me ride away.

Roughly that is what I remember, I would be grateful to have the right lyrics for that song. The singer also did 'Rupert the Bear'.

P-L-A-Y Playaway way Playaway way PLAYAWAY!

I'm a very friendly lion called Parsley (The Herbs).

Jamie, Jamie and his Magic torch (boy and his dog used to go down a hollow in a tree when everyone was asleep, very hip children's animation).

I wish I was a spaceman the fastest guy alive and zoom around the Milky Way in Fireball XL5,
We'll fly or race across the something or other and zoom our way to Mars,
If I was a Fireball a Fireball,
And you would be my Venus of the stars (Fireball XL5)

Help! Does anybody remember a birthday song from the late 60's or early 70's that was on an album by perhaps Sesame Street or Captain Kangaroo w/lyrics like this.."your one year older, almost grown up now" & "So, have a happy birthday, in each & every way, and may your birthday wishes all come true...Wer'e glad that it's your birthday and we would just like to say....a very happy birthday to you".. or maybe this lyric.."there's no other day exactly like a birthday"...My kid sister loved this song & we can't remember the artist or name of the song. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I spent 3 hours today on the computer & it shows up nowhere:(

Another from Sesame Street - not sure why the whole thing is still in my brain

It is I, Captain Vegetable, with my carrot and my celery
Eating crunchy vegetables is good for me
And they're good for you so eat them too
For teeth so strong your whole life long
Eat celery and carrots by the bunch
Hooray for me Captain Vegetable, crunch, crunch, crunch

My kids loved that song, although continued to despise vegetables

There's a man you've seen
On your television screne
He's the one I'd like to be.
He can ride and shoot
And he's plenty smart to boot
That's Hopalong Cassidy.

Thanks for the info, Cool Beans. I think I knew that the singer of "I'm no Fool" was the same person as the voice of Jiminy Cricket. I was just wrong about it being Jimmy Dodd.

I'm trying to find this song on record, but I think its from a Romper Room or Captain Kangaroo record I used to have as a kid.

F-O-X spells Fox
B-O-X spells Box
F-O-X and B-O-X means there's a FOX in the BOX

B-U-G spells Bug
R-U-G spells Rug
B-U-G and R-U-G means there's a BUG on the RUG

and so forth. Anyone heard of this song???

Hey, Clueless Don (from 2007):
It was Cliff Edwards, aka Ukulele Ike, aka Jiminy Cricket, who sang "I'm no fool."

Champion the Wonder Horse from Gene Autry's Flying A Productions, sung by Frankie Laine:

Champion the Wonder Horse! Champion the Wonder Horse!
Like a streak of lightnin' flash across the sky,
Like the swiftest arrow whizzin' from a bow,
Like a mighty cannonball he seems to fly,
You'll hear about him everwhere you go.
The time will come when everyone will know the name of
Champion the Wonder Horse! Champion the Wonder Horse!

I'm going back to Sesame Street, here. This is one of my favorite songs, written by the Late, Great, Joe Raposo for the first season, back in 1969:

Sing
Sing a song
Sing out loud
Sing out strong
Sing of good things, not bad
Sing of happy, not sad

Sing
Sing a song
Make it simple
To last your whole life long
Don't worry that it's not good enough
For anyone else to hear
Just sing --
Sing a song.

And then, there's the classic written by David Axlerod and Sam Pottle (1974) that could be Mudcat's theme song:

(link to a YouTube video, from the Sesame Street Channel):

La-di-da-di-dum, la-di-da-dum...
What's the name of that song?
It goes la-di-da-di-dum, la-di-da-di-dum...
Something, something "Birds,"
La-di-da-dum, la-di-da-di--
I wish I remembered the words!

Expanding on what PHJim wrote on 26 Oct 09 - 12:00 PM,

I'm Tom Terrific,
greatest hero ever.
Terrific is the name for me,
'cause I'm so clever.
I can be what I want to* be,
and if you'd like to see,
follow, just follow me!
If you see a plane up high ...
a diesel train go roaring by ...
a bumble bee ... or a tree ...
it's me!
When there is trouble,
I'm there on the double.
From the Atlantic to Pacific,
they know Tom Terrific!

*I think "want to" was actually pronounced something like "wanna".

I have to say my love for folk music started with Tony Saletan in the early 60s. (I'm not sure if that's the way his name was spelled) who was with WGBH. He'd sing Pick a Bale of Cotton with his guitar and glasses. I loved his show when I was 4 and 5; picked up a record of his of Revolutionary Songs in the 70s.

I also remember the Gentle Giant and fell in love with Early One Morning... just played on the harp while the "giant" pulled out a tiny dollhouse chair and invited tykes like me to sit down. I don't remember anything about the show... but I LOVED that song.

Actually, the Spiderman song abive is missing a whole verse. Here is the whole thing along with one of my faves, Super Chicken!

Rob K

PS OK, I'm two and a half years late but better late than never.

    Spiderman, Spiderman,
    Does whatever a spider can
    Spins a web, any size,
    Catches thieves just like flies
    Look Out!
    Here comes the Spiderman.

    Is he strong?
    Listen bud,
    He's got radioactive blood.
Can he swing from a thread
    Take a look overhead
    Hey, there
    There goes the Spiderman.

    In the chill of night
At the scene of a crime
    Like a streak of light
    He arrives just in time.

    Spiderman, Spiderman
    Friendly neighborhood Spiderman
    Wealth and fame
    He's ingnored
    Action is his reward.

To him, life is a great big bang up
    Whenever there's a hang up
    You'll find the Spider man.

Super Chicken

When you find youself in danger,
When you're threatened by a stranger,
When it looks like you will take a lickin', (puk, puk, puk)
    There is someone waiting,
Who will hurry up and rescue you,
Just Call for Super Chicken! (puk, ack!)

Fred, if you're afraid you'll have to overlook it,
Besides you knew the job was dangerous when you took it (puk, ack!)

He will drink his super sauce
And throw the bad guys for a loss
And he will bring them in alive and kickin' (puk, puk, puk)
There is one thing you should learn
When there is no one else to turn to
Call for Super Chicken! (puk, puk, puk)
Call for Super Chicken! (puk, ack!)

I can't believe I actually remember all the words to this:

Little Lulu, Little Lulu
With freckles on your chin
Always in & out of trouble
But mostly always in
Using Daddy's necktie
For the tail of your kite
Using Mommy's lipstick
For the letters you write

Though the clock says half past seven
It's really after ten
Looks like Lulu's been preparing[?] it again
Though you're wilder than a Zulu
And just as hard to tame
Little Lulu I love you-lu just the same
The same
Little Lulu I love you-lu just the same

You want old? How about this - I can remember the address you had to write to in order to send away for a Winky-Dink magic shield (made of greeny cling-plastic) so you could draw on your TV screen without your mom killing you:

Winky Dink
Box 5
New York 19
N.Y.

When criminals in this world appear
and break the laws that they should fear
and frighten all who see or hear
The cry goes up both far and near
for Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog!

Speed of lightning, roar of thunder
fighting all who rob or plunder
Underdog. Underdog!

When in this world the headlines read
of those whose hearts are filled with greed
who rob and steal from those who need
To right this wrong with blinding speed
goes Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog!

Speed of lightning, roar of thunder
fighting all who rob or plunder
Underdog. Underdog!

NO, I think it's this:

Alfred, the airsick eagle,
Never likes being up high,
So delicate is he,
that heights make him dizzy,
so he never likes to fly.

don't remember the rest either, but
I think he finally got over it and
saved some baby squirrels or something.

Mickey Mouse Club:

Special Guest Day: "Today is (Tuesday???), you know what that means - we're gonna have a special guest!..."

At the end of Special Guest day, they'd present the Guest with a spangled sort of glittery Mickey Mouse hat and sing: "Here's your hat, here's your ears, you're an honorary Mouseketeeeeeeeerrrrr!!!!!"

Talent Round-up day: "Saddle your ponies, here we go, down to the talent rodeo.....something something something... Join the Talent Round-Up! Round 'em up! (Round 'em up!) Bring 'em in! (Bring 'em in!) Everybody's sure to win... Something something something.... Oh, what a rodeo! .... something something...Bring along Susie, Jack, and Joe, join the Talent Round-Up!"

Encyclopedia song: "Get the EN-cyclopedia, E N C Y C L O P E D I A (repeat) Just look inside this book and you will see From Africa all the way to Z..."(at which point a picture of a zebra in the encyclopedia would kick Jiminy Cricket)

Somebody mentioned Sheriff John, a Los Angeles kid show. Beside the birthday song, his theme song was:

Laugh and be happy
And the world will laugh with you.
When people see you're happy,
Then they'll be happy too.
So wear a smile, and in a while
Your cares will go away.
So laugh and be happy
All the livelong day.

Words to live by even 50 years later.

John

And there's more ..
Marina, Aqua Marina,
What are these strange enchantments that start whenever you're near?

Marina, Aqua Marina,
Why can't you whisper the words my heart is longing to hear?

Your magic to me, a beautiful mystery.
I'm certain to fall I know, because you enthrall me so.

Marina, Aqua Marina,
Why don't you say, that you'll always stay, close to my heart.

In my opinion Troy Tempest was just wasting his time with Marina - it was a relationship going nowhere! Atlanta was clearly the girl for him - 45 years later I still feel the injustice.

I wish I was a spaceman,the fastest guy alive.
I'd fly you round the universe in Fireball XL5.
Way out in space together, conquerors of the skies.
My heart would be a fireball,a fireball.

Every time I gaze into your starry eyes.

We’d take a path to Jupiter and maybe very soon.
We’d cruise along the Milky Way and land upon the Moon.
To a wonderland of stardust.
We’ll zoom our way to Mars.

My heart would be a fireball, a fireball.

And you would be my Venus of the stars.

Ay thang yew

These old kid's shows even had songs for their commercials. Anybody out there remember Uncle Johnny Coons? He was a Chicago show that went national for a couple of years.

When mother says go take a bath
Don't frown and start to mope.
Just join your Uncle Johnny Coons
And wash with Lifebouy soap.
OOOOOh
I like pink Lifebouy soap
Because it smells so keen.
I like it cause it makes my skin
so clean clean clean.
