Awrrright!!!! The Groundhog says Spring is just around the corner. This is fine with me, and it fits right in with global warming trends.

Phil usually sees his shadow (90% of past predictions), but this time he saw no shadow.

Could this be part of the great international conspiracy led by Al Gore to bamboozle us all into believing that global warming is occurring...? Could the Groundhog have been paid off...or worse yet, blackmailed????!!! Could his relatives have been threatened with death?

Well, I don't think so. ;-) Nope, I believe that Phil is courageous and incorruptible and that no one, not even satanic monsters like Al Gore and the environmental community, can intimidate him one bit. Uh-uh.

Heh!

Well, PP made his way across the continent to Juneau Alaska where he is sunning himself right now.

(That's fine. I hope for a snowy February)

TODAYS Memo from the desk of Dick Cheney:

Phil's handlers may have been influenced by liberal tree huggers who are out to cripple struggling companies like Exxon and coal fired electric plants.

This turn coat traitor Phil the Groundhog should be dealt with extreme predjudice. I assure you it will be done in such a way that generations of Phil's replacements will not even think of stepping out of line.

Dick Cheney.

Same thing with Wiarton Wille and Shubenacadie Sam. I think the little rats are in a conspiracy to lull us into a false sense of spring. Now, Moncton Millie didn't even bother to come out on accounta the snow. SHE has some sense.

I think that may have been a "Groundhog Day" joke. You know, deja vu?

The story I have always heard about Groundhog Day is that if the groundhog sees its shadow on February 2nd, then it will be six weekstill spring. That would make spring come about mid-March.

I've lived in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Missouri, and mid-March isn't spring in any of those places. Missouri is usually milder, but March is still a raw, chilly time of year.

Tell me, where does one have to live in order to see spring come in mid-March?

Well, technically, anywhere in the northern hemisphere spring (as measured by the vernal equinox) comes on March 21 this year. Unfortunately for those of us in the more northern climes, the weatherman doesn't always seem to agree.

What does it mean when the little troglodyte rodent comes out, turns around three times, takes a dump, then retreats back into his hole?

Little Hawk - thank you for the first laugh of the day!! (It's nearly 4.30 am, Manitas never made it home last night from a gig just up the road and I've been awake since 2.00am)

How do we know it's the same groundhog 'Phil'?

Well, I think it's a shame we don't have any groundhogs in the UK so we can have this Spring forecasting tradition too. We do however have hedgehogs, and they hibernate. So, I think I'll start with one in the W. Midlands and call him Harry, the Halesowen Hedgehog. Or maybe a female version in the South - Henrietta the Henley Hedgehog. Now, when do the little prickly fellows come out from the compost heaps?? They'll be too late anyway as Spring seems to have sprung this weekend in most of the UK.

I read it on a postcard, illustrated by Simon Drew, the madman who has a gallery in Devon, draws silly animal pictures like 'moled wine', 'prawn to be wild' and 'dark satanic moles'.

Here in balmy southern Ohio we are not expecting highs to be above 20 for the next week or so with lows at zero or below. It's been this way for the past few days as well. If this is some rodent premonition of Spring, then PHIL BE PHUCKED UP, Jack!

Groundhog makes a good stew meat if you boil it off the bone first. Cool, and then skim most of the copious grease off the broth before adding veggies and completing the cooking process. The best dumplings are the simplest with just flour and sour cream.

Not skimming the grease will make your stew slimey and with a strong gamey taste. It will also make YOU shit on the rug.......

I have to agree. I'm looking at a week of 20 degree highs here as well and wondering what happened. It was down right warm in January !!!
