I had a great time.... once I got home and unpacked the gear. No, but seriously, thanks to everyone who came and performed, sessioned, listened , ate, drank etc etc. It was worth all the effort and sleepless nights!

Book now for next year 8th to 10th Feb '08 (to be confirmed but I'm pretty sure of it). Guest artists to be thought about over the next few months and I'm not giving any sneak previews.

In the meantime, if you get the chance to catch the Orpheus Supertones in collaboration with Debby McClatchy as 'The Gathering' (mark 2) then do! See the gigs on this thread Supertones thread assuming it works!

Your ever caring festival organiser Nick!

Joke from Walt Koken of the Supertones:
Rumsfeld: "Mr President, three Brazilian soldiers have been killed in Iraq"
Bush: "So, how many in a Brazilian?"
The guy's a hoot!

Had a great day yesterday. Really enjoyed Sara Grey and Kieron Means especially since we thought they wouldn't make it. Mike Fenton has inspired me to take up the autoharp again so watch out for the Web Footed Ramblers!! Well done to all organisers - hopefully we'll get there for the whole weekend next year.

Early friday morning: Just been jamming with the Supertones in Gainsborough at the house where they're staying. Debby McClatchy was there as well, playing fiddle. I'll tell you this - anyone coming to the festival is definitely doing themselves a favour. Those guys can PLAY.
Cheers

Friday evening is £10 for members and £12 for non-members.
Joining that night would reduce membership to £13, and get the Old Time News delivered to your doorstep. It could also get you £10 off a weekend ticket, and pay for itself if you came to our summer camp.

The Orpheus Supertones are all packed and ready to go; the winter storm that brought snow, sleet and freezing rain last nightis slowing down and stopping so we HOPE that our plane will take off tonight and get us over to Manchester tomorrow, and then we can find our lodging, sleep off the jet lag and be ready to play at the start of the festival. I can't tell you how much we are looking forward to this!

And needless to say that's sound recorders not blowy recorders!

Also, not specified above is that we do actually have a nomination for newsletter editor. But of course that's only really of interest if you are a FOAOTMAD member and benefit from our ever improving newsletter, The Old Time News.

I've just found this on a mailing list I belong to:

"Orpheus Supertones have captured the essence of early country music."
                - Bluegrass Unlimited

"The band displays a familiarity that draws the audience in right off
the bat. 'Just pretend we're in the living room,' Koken says, 'having
a few drinks and playing a few tunes.' Oh, but don't be fooled by the
just-folks, easy demeanor. These people are take-no-prisoner,
downright hot musicians."

                - Eureka Times Standard

"The genius of this group lies in their ability to apply just the
right level of sophistication to each piece they play. They approach
each one from a suitable direction, and they never sound bored. As a
result, neither are we."

                - Old Time Herald

I can't wait.

Thanks for that Linda - they're an excellent band. Pete Cooper's a fine fiddler of many different styles including Old Time, Chris Moreton's flatpicking's as good as anybody's. Dave Arthur's not bad on the banjo, either. Unfortunately I'm practising with the Bootleggers in Scunthorpe that night, or I think I'd be there.

Yes, we're trying some rather more esoteric workshops this year, makning use of a broad skillbase. There'll still be the usual ones but scattered around will be some that don't feature fiddles and banjos (shock horror!).

If anyone fancies trying the autoharp - Mike Fenton will be bringing a bunch with him to use in his workshops. I'm going to be really scratching my head to decide on which to go to, though Clare Milliner's fiddle workshop will be one definite, and I'd quite like to try Cath Tyler's Shape Note singing.

'Stewarts'? Ray... That well known slip of the finger...

Can I re-iterate for those people who ARE coming. That means NO ACCESS TO THE SCHOOL SITE until 5:30 - no matter how far you've travelled!!!

It's still a school day, so sneaking in and sitting in the car park or canteen will be heavily frowned on, by us and the school staff who allow themselves to be disrupted for our benefit and whose patience is much appreciated. Sorry to sound an old whinger but it really is hard to arrive and get set up surrounded by people who we aren't ready for...

... or not ready for a little while!
