Is there going to be one? Is anyone organising one if there is?

Enquiring minds want to know....

Skipjack K8, May 28, 2006:

Just a brief update. I have sown the seed for our next Eurogathering with my friends in Cassano D'Adda, east of Milan, and the guarded response wasn't negative, so hopefully it'll be a runner. If it runs, Bergamo Airport is the closest, or Venice if you are coming on the Orient Express.

I haven't seen too many folkies on the Orient Express (Ooerr! isn't that dangerous? They have murders on there, don't they?)

:-)

How apposite that you raise the matter, Betty, as only yesterday I learned that our potential hostess is happily up the duff, and as the bairn is due in late April, probably the last thing she will want in early May is a farmyard full of the greatest unwashed playing homemade music and singing songs about church fires.

I was going to send a round robin PM to the exclsuive club of previous organisers, but it is better to open up the discussion to all potential organisers and attendees now.

Any ideas?

That's a shame. I was looking forward to a trip on the Orient Express.

One of the suggestions, from Susanne, for a future venue was Kiel. How about there for 2007? I hope we find somewhere as I've got my weekend pass organised.

Scotland sounds good.

Would I need a special visa or would my ordinary UK passport get me past Hadrian's Wall?

Would we have to wear kilts?

Drink the Brennevin and you'll be there for more than a weekend - you can't get new kidneys that quickly!

Would that be the weekend of May 4 - 6? In that case, I could offer you a visit to a Dick Gaughan gig only half an hour away on the Friday night, plus I could try to have a local 'Irish Night' scheduled for Saturday. (That's one of our regular big sessions of local folk musicians - whether of the Irish, Scottish or Scandinavian persuasion ... - who'd be delighted to have a crowd of musically skilled foreign guests). The biggest problem would be accommodation because my flat won't take more than half a dozen, and those must not be allergic to cats!

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind that much if 2007 took place in Scotland, even though that would mean missing DG over here! Should we start a new thread for a proper vote?

Iceland? Nivvor been burrit sounds canny!! Scotland's canny an' aall mind.

Hopefully if me 'windfaall' is still in the bank we'll be gannin wherever it is. Italy, Scotland, Bahamas, Germany, even Belgium! Aah divvent care.

It's a difficult choice but I'd prefer Dick Gaughan to Scotland for I've seen Scotland four times now and Dick Gaughan never yet and Scotland always stays at the same place ready to be visited.

Come on, you've got a fortnight to decide - I'm going away on holiday tomorrow and won't be near the internet too often for the next two weeks.

People could fly Ryanair into Luebeck (who call it Hamburg, but it's anything but ...), which is a train ride away from Kiel - just under an hour, I believe, and very scenic, in a flat sort of way.

I fancy Kiel, and if I get to meet some of you, I fancy it very much. It can be a bit windy up there, but I am sure there will be bolt holes for Mudcatters to meet, drink and sing. It is probably easier for many UK Mudcatters to reach than some areas of Scotland!(No offence to Scotland - the country and the inhabitants are wonderful).

Scotland would suit me - it's where I'm from.. tho I don't live there anymore! Still got family scattered centrally!
Kiel would be do-able - I used to live in Germany too - so I'll put this on tracer, get out the diary and check the route via North Sea Ferries ... if the old motorhome survives the winter....I could bring an 'ull contingent! Might be better to take a train tho' the van it a bit slow.
Whatever, it's a great thought and something to look forward to!

Kiel? Good chance to sing a few canal songs there...

... but Scotland has the whisky in its favour ;-)

Now where did I put my kilt...?

(sings) Hark when the night is falling,
Hear! hear the pipes are calling,
Loudly and proudly calling,
Down thro' the glen...

Right, I'm back. Seems to me the Mudcat (or the relevant section of it) is still undecided. So who would organise Euro 2007 in Scotland? Or in the other places that have been suggested? I'd be prepared to do it in Kiel. Yes, I meant it when I suggested it, Noreen - and I'd love to see you over here next year, along with anybody else willing to come. skarpi really has no excuse as Germany can't be that much farther from Iceland than Scotland ...

Maybe Andy can start on his usual task as headhunter soon. So far, I've counted Geordie-Porgie, Wolfgang, Doug, Liz, Giok, alanabit, Pistachio, Greg(?), Ernest, Scrump(?), Wilfried, Andy (presumably, to keep up his unbroken record), Guest(?), Noreen, Letty (hopefully).

Against (quite unreasonably, of course): skarpi, Emma B.

Trying to throw spanners in the works (even more unreasonably, of course): Forsh, Stallion

Some additional info:
Liz, it's hard to tell in advance, but from my experience the necessity of thermal vests in May is highly unlikely. Motorhomes are becoming unsettlingly frequent on local roads from the Easter holidays right through to September, and I've never yet heard of people using them freezing to death. As far as I know they come with central heating ... Scrump may not realise it, but whisky is actually cheaper in Germany than in Scotland, due to the difference in duties on spirits. And we now have some very discerning pub landlords where whisky is concerned. Any suggestions as to what should be ordered beforehand? (I'd prefer to save my personal stock of Macallan's, Bowmore and Edradour for the winter.)

For those of you not bringing motorhomes, tents etc., Kiel is a city of 330,000, with a youth hostel, a backpackers' hostel, a good range of hotels and quite a few guest houses to suit all your tastes and purses, I think. Transport may present some problems if you all insist on flying or 'training' in ... :-), but I'm sure we'll come up with a solution.

Finally: Where are the others? Our regulars in particular? Eric? Richard? Looking forward to hearing from you!
