Well, the way most people play it, it's an E7 in the key of C. Try that.

It is kind of a diminished chord--all Seventh Chords have a diminished triad, E7 has G#-B-D-so you can think of it as a G# diminished with the note a major third below the fundamaental, (or a major step above the fifth )added.   It either explains a lot, or makes things more confusing.

Either way, though, Cap't, you've got to get out more--
