Does anyone remember the words to "Leon Trotsky Was A Nazi"? It's sung to the tune of "Clementine". The first verse goes something like:

"In an office, in the Kremlin
In the year of '39.
Sat a Russian, and a Prussian
Working out the party line...."

It is an anti-Stalinist song, as you might have guessed.

It was sung a lot on CND marches in the 1960's.

As well as the lyrics, does anyone know its origins - who (if anyone) might have written it?

Cheers

Norman

You're welcome, Norman.

some variant verses

BTW, I searched with "Trotsky was a Nazi" which gives some dozen hits but only some of them are to the song.

Usually, Peace or Sorcha are the first to link, but they may have searched with your opening line which finds nothing.

As you said, there are take-offs.

Oh My Stalin

In Old Moscow, in the Kremlin
In the spring of '39
Sat a Russian and a Prussian
Working out the Party Line

(Chorus)
Oh my Stalin, Oh my Stalin,
Oh my Stalin party line
First he changed it, then rearranged it
Oh my Stalin Party Line

Leon Trotsky was a Nazi
We all knew it for a fact
Pravda said it, We all read it
'fore the Hitler-Stalin pact

Once, a Nazi, would be shot see
That was then the party line
Now a Nazi's, hotsy-totsy
Volga boatmen sail the Rhine/
I can bend this spine of mine.

Now the Fuhrer and our leader
Stand within the party line
All the Russians, love the Prussians
Trotsky's laying British mines

Party comrade, Party comrade,
What a sorry fate is thine!
Comrade Stalin does not love you
'Cause you left the Party Line.

Oh my Stalin, Oh my Stalin,
Oh my Stalin Party Line;
Oh, I never will forsake you
for I love this life of mine.

To the tune of Auld Lang Syne

And should old Bolshies be forgot,
and never brought to mind,
you'll find them in Siberia,
with a ball and chain behind.
A ball and chain behind, my dear,
a ball and chain behind...
Joe Stalin shot the bloody lot
for the sake of the Party Line.

Incidentally, a Google of

"Sat a Russian, and a Prussian"

with quotation marks will take you to a few also.

Thank you all. Gone are the days (but maybe not for long) when you could go on marches / demos and hear songs like this.

Gone are the days when you could go on marches......

Not that long ago, when my son was in the Woodcraft Folk, I was reading one of their old songbooks. It actually had one called "The Song of the Komsomol" (the youth wing of the Soviet Communist Party). Not only was I the only one who thought this was hilarious, I was the only one who knew what the Komsomol was.

A later version, from _The Bosses Songbook_ (ca. 1958):

Down in Cairo, down in Egypt,
Swilling Manischewitz wine,
Sat a comrade and a fascist
Mapping out the party line.

Once a Nasser could kiss my ass, sir.
Now that's not the thing to do,
For Arab soil reeks of oil
And Leon Trotsky was a Jew.

Now el Nasser and his bastards
Stand among the rank and file.
With Suez shipping and Gaza stripping,
Volga boatmen cruise the Nile.

The song was probably written by some Stalinist hack.Trotsky was a great socialist revolutionary. He was murdered on a Stlin's orders in 1940 and some 15 of Trotsky's family were also murdered or imprisoned by that dictator.

Hi Hugo
I agree with what you say, but not your first sentence. The song was written as an anti-Stalinist parody. It's explained (along with the words) in the link provided by Wolfgang, above.

I've cut and pasted from the link:

"On August 23, 1939. Stalin shocked Communist parties all over the world when he signed a pact with Hitler. 'The Daily Worker' missed publication for one day until the new line was handed down. Said the new line was "Fascism was no longer a threat" ... it was only a matter of 'taste.' Nazis ceased to be beasts, and any opposition to Hitler was branded as detrimental to the cause of 'world revolution.' The new slogan of the American CP was "The Yanks are not coming" as the Nazis and the Communists embraced in old Moscow. In Old Moscow was written by Walter Gourlay under his party name Walter Cliff. Friedland met Gourlay while he was living in Staten Island. "He recruited me to the Shachtman group," he said. "He wrote beautiful polemical parodies. 'In Old Moscow' was one of his songs. We used to build skits around these things - whole skits - and that was only one of the songs we used. This would have been around 1941."
Ronald D. Cohen & Dave Samuelson, liner notes for "Songs for Political Action," Bear Family Records, BCD 15 720 JL, 1996, pp. 195-197.

This was part of a skit prepared by the Jacobin Jerques,
Young People's Socialist League (4th International), Staten Island, New York. Circa 1940-'41.

The YPSL was certainly not a Stalinist group. Its members were affectionately known as "Yipsels", which crops up in another song, via Wolfgang's link.
