Subject: Lyr Req: it's a wonder the rain don't tear off my
From: GUEST
Date: 16 Jul 06 - 11:53 AM

Hi all,
I have a fragment of a chorus for a good song i've been trying to track down for a while.
It goes..."it's a wonder the rain don't tear off my skin, get in there and turn out the light".
Sorry its not more, and i can't say that my wording is spot on either, but that's the thrust of it.

Any help much appreciated!

The song is The Goodnight- Loving Trail. Start with this song link and have another look at the links there.

The very best version I ever heard of this song is by the late , great Texas troubador, Allan Wayne Damron. God rest his soul.

Rab Noakes used to sing it too - a fine version.

Ed Trickett has a version of it on one of the Folk-Legacy records. I'm sure Sandy Paton could get one to you.

It's on Ed Trickett's first Folk-Legacy recording - CD-46 "The Telling Takes Me Home." What a great song it is! One of my favorite recordings, too.

It's hard for me to think that ANYONE could do better on this song than Utah Philips, who wrote it.

Actually, I should apply that comment to any of his songs.

Maybe I'll just push that a LEETLE bit further, and say nobody could do better than Utah Philips on ANYTHING he sings.

You just might figure out that I'm a strong partisan of Utah Philips!

When I was first in the Wash DC area in the late 70s, at almost any singing party I attended, the one song you could count on EVERYONE knowing was "The Goodnight-Loving Trail"....

Most of Utah's stuff has been re-released on a 4 CD set called "Starlight on the Rails".....get it. (I'm sure CAMSCO probably has it.)

for those who have never heard Utah....(all 7 of you)....here is the song. GoodnightLovingTrail listen...then go get ALL of Utah's stuff.

But Dave, you really should call Folk-Legacy and get some recordings of Ed Trickett singing Utah Phillips songs. People Like You has Ashes on the Sea (also recorded by Kendall Morse on the Starlight on the Rails collection). Ed's The Telling Takes Me Home has the title song and "The Goodnight-Loving Trail" - it also has Bob Coltman's "Before They Close the Minstrel Show," and there are Bob Coltman songs on two other Ed Trickett CD's.
If you haven't heard Ed Trickett, you deserve to.

Bill D: OK, count me for one of the seven; heard of, but never heard, Utah Phlips. I like the song well enough to have followed the link (not my usual practice) for which much thanks.

The treatment in UK is rather different as a rule, so to hear the originator (author? composer?) was a treat. I may well see what else he has done, should certainly broaden my horizons and this might be the start.

A great version was recorded by Swan Arcade BTW, though I don't know whether it is on line, if you come across it you'll see what I mean about different treatment.

Hi folks,
Firstly a huge thanks to all who responded to the "its a wonder the wind don't tear off my skin" lyric hunt....thats Mick, Treaties, EBarnacle, Sandy, Les, Kenny, Big Jim, Uncle DaveO, Bill, Joe Offer & gnomad.
I enjoyed all the banter and the links. I'm on this Utah Phillips thang as we speak!
PS: Oh and it led to the words of 'All Used Up'...another song i had been looking out for.

Will linger longer on this thread.
Merci buckets all ;-)

Thanks, Mike Pearce, for providing all that information on the song and the trail.

Until you posted the info about Messrs. Goodnight and Loving, I assumed the title was of a sickly lullabye.

Finest Kind, a terrific vocal trio of Shelley Posen, Ian Robb and Ann Downey, have an excellent a cappella version og "Goodnight Loving Trail" on their "Lost in a Song" CD.
