I doubt you'll get much useful advice regarding funk music on this site but a quick "google" throws up a few things.

For example.........

Knock yourself out!!

C-flat.

LIsten to any James Brown and you'll hear that basic 9th (the first one on the site) endlessly, although personally I put my thumb over the neck and make it a 6 string chord, contrary to the advice on that website.

You can also use the basic E major (powerchord) shape and (in E) put your little finger on teh F sharp for the 9th in that shape - works all the way up the neck.

The short answer is : the same chords as to anything else, just played funky--were you asking for a particular tune?

Any inversion of a suspended seventh and ducks out.

beginners can start with barred minor 7ths

on the'ONE' downbeat..
try sliding up from the fret below the chord you intend to play the rest of the bar on..

jam on and trial and error from there..

usually worked for me and my mates when we were trying to work out
chart funk toons back in the 70's

Good funk is characterised by

Blues and modal type harmony - 7#9, and other chords mentioned in earlier threads

Syncopated rhythms - often semi-quaver type syncopation.

Mr James Brown stresses the importance of the first beat of the bar.

Bass is often mixed louder than in other styles of music.

These are generalisations but for more details listen to James Brown, Earth WInd and Fire, George Russell and then some more James Brown.

And one last bit of advice.....

Get on the good foot.

Try my method. Play an old familiar chord, then remove one finger (left hand). Experiment with different fingers.

On keyboards "slur" "bend" the end phrases up or down (depending on tune) through the half-pitch....add extended half-note trills mid phrase to allow the vocalist to "emote."

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

PLEASE do NOT use the wha-wha bend on the keyboard - yeah-its "funky" like a limp dead chicken.
