What great play by the Oilers!

Me, I love underdogs. They furnish all the suspense that makes it exciting!

Wow! Interesting results today.

I watched NJ and NYR on NBC. Jagr is injured and the Rangers can't stay out of the Box. New Jersey was the hottest team coming into the playoffs. I don't think the Rangers will see too many more games.

MONTREAL 6 Carolina 1, Wow!! I thought if Montreal won any games they would be goaltending battles. I guess the Habs can score!

Maybe the Aves are a little better than I thought. Buffalo and Philly should be a good close series.

I'm hoping for an Ottawa - Detroit series. This would put me a few hours away from seeing a game. However, as I say this I'm thinking I probably couldn't afford a ticket anyway. I'm pulling for Ottawa in the East but my heart is still with Detroit.

Beer,

I know its wrong of me to cheer the underdogs in that series while hoping devoutly that the Senators crush Tampa in four. But then, what can you do?

Yes Jack, Detroit had a rough go and that was expected. Although they had over 50 shots they played a terrible game. But on the bright side, Steve "Y" got 3rd. star.
It's not Booooooooo !!!!! Jack. It's Yahooooooooooooooooooooo.

Woooooo Hooooooo
Sens Win!!

I was really worried for 40 minutes. They trailed the defending Stanley cup champions for more than twenty. But then da byes came through.

35 saves from than rookie with a 'tude sugar Ray Emery!
Spezza and Havlat with big goals and big assists.

The referees had a lot of influence on the game. But that id the new NHL. We gotta deal with it. Anyway...... Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!

Btw Detroit beat Edmonton, 2nd OT. Booooooo.

They have some pretty good editorial copy there, and stats and stuff. Not too many active posters to get a feel for who's who, it seems. Some of the membernames are a hoot.

PS should have included the chart's headers-- the visitor/home thing matters a lot as I am sure you all know. See the first game below for an example how to read the schedule across. Some nights-- TWO games. Hardi will be so happy-- he often works evenings.

Got the news from OLN. They screwed us so bad on cycling coverage the last two years, I cannot believe it yet-- but my local listings say there will be live playoffs every night from 7PM EST till midnight through the first two finals games. I think NBC is doing the weekend games-- but now I know not to plan anyhting for weeknights at least!

Matchups for first round of Stanley Cup playoffs

(CP) - Matchups for first round of NHL playoffs beginning Friday and Saturday (seedings in parenthesis):

Western Conference

(1) Detroit vs. (8) Edmonton

Previous meetings: Two, 1987 and 1988, both won by Oilers.

Last time in playoffs: Red Wings lost to Calgary in six games in second round in 2004; Oilers missed last spring, and were eliminated by Dallas in six games in first round in 2003.

Season series: Split - Nov. 3, Edmonton 4 at Detroit 3 (OT); Nov. 17, Detroit 5 at Edmonton 6 (OT); March 18, Detroit 4 at Edmonton 3 (SO); April 11, Edmonton 0 at Detroit 2.

Top goal scorers: Detroit - Shanahan 40, Zetterberg 39; Edmonton - Smyth 36, Torres 27.

Goaltending: Detroit - Legace 2.19 GAA, .915 save percentage; Edmonton - Roloson 2.73, .908.

Synopsis: Before losing their season finale, the Red Wings earned at least a point in 20 consecutive games, but the Oilers usually give them fits so this could be a lot tighter than most would predict.

The talk: "Both teams are built on speed and skill. I anticipate a very difficult, very close series." - Detroit GM Ken Holland.

"We'll go in blind and, hopefully, won't show them too much respect." - Oilers defenceman Chris Pronger.

-

(2) Dallas vs. (7) Colorado

Previous meetings: Colorado won 2004 first-round series 4-1; Dallas won seven-game 2000 conference final.

2004 playoffs: Colorado knocked off Dallas in first round and went out in six games against San Jose in second round.

Season series: Dallas had slight edge - Oct. 8, Colorado 3 at Dallas 2; Nov. 5, Dallas 3 at Colorado 2 (SO); Jan. 26, Dallas 3 at Colorado 2 (SO); March 4, Colorado 3 at Dallas 5.

Top goal scorers: Dallas - Lehtinen 33, Arnott 32; Colorado - Sakic 32, Svatos 32.

Goaltending: Dallas - Turco 2.55, .898; Colorado - Theodore 3.41, .882.

Synopsis: Stars are superior in every department, including big edge in goaltending. The Avs prepped Theodore for post-season by using him in last five games, and he went 1-3-1.

The talk: "Colorado has a lot of highly-skilled players who have been in this situation before with Sakic and Hejduk and Tanguay and Blake. You're going to have your hands full." - Stars coach Dave Tippett.

"That's a team that does a lot of things right and they're having a real strong year." - Avs coach Joel Quenneville.

-

(3) Calgary vs. (6) Anaheim

Previous meetings: None.

2004 playoffs: Calgary lost seven-game Stanley Cup final to Tampa Bay; Anaheim failed to qualify the year after going all the way to 2003 Stanley Cup final and losing to New Jersey in seven games.

Season series: Split - Oct. 26, Calgary 1 at Anaheim 4; Feb. 8, Anaheim 1 at Calgary 3; April 11, Anaheim 0 at Calgary 3; April 17, Calgary 3 at Anaheim 4.

Top goal scorers: Calgary - Iginla 35, Langkow 25; Anaheim - Selanne 40, McDonald 34.

Goaltending: Calgary - Kiprusoff 2.07, .923; Anaheim - Giguere 2.66, .901.

Synopsis: The Flames, with the league's tightest-checking lineup, won't beat the quack out of the Ducks unless they score more often.

The talk: "They're a very quick team and they've got some good young guys. Their top line with Teemu and McDonald is having a great year and they have good goaltending so we're going to just try to play to our strengths." - Flames captain Jarome Iginla.

"They're going to make it tough so we're going to have to pay a bit of a price in front of the net, get into the corners, and work hard." - Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer.

-

(4) Nashville vs. (5) San Jose

Previous meetings: None.

2004 playoffs: Predators made first post-season appearance and lost first-round series to Detroit in six games; Sharks lost conference final to Calgary in six games.

Season series: Split - Oct. 5, San Jose 2 at Nashville 3; Oct. 22, San Jose 1 at Nashville 2; Nov. 2, Nashville 2 at San Jose 3 (OT); March 11, Nashville 2 at San Jose 3 (OT).

Top goal scorers: Nashville - Sullivan 31, Sillinger 31; San Jose - Cheechoo 56, Marleau 34.

Goaltending: Nashville - Mason 2.52, .910; San Jose - Toskala 2.56, .901.

Synopsis: San Jose has the edge because it is one of the hottest teams in the league with eight straight wins, and because Nashville will be without No. 1 goaltender Tomas Vokoun.

The talk: "They have the top player in the NHL in (Joe) Thornton playing the best he has played in his career. They are a well-balanced team." - Nashville coach Barry Trotz.

"It's going to be a fun series. They're a good team, and it's probably going to be a seven-game series." - Thornton.

-

Eastern Conference

(1) Ottawa vs. (8) Tampa Bay

Previous playoff meetings: None.

2004 playoffs: Senators were eliminated by Toronto in seven games in first round; Lightning won Stanley Cup in seven-game series with Calgary.

Season series: Senators swept, outscoring Lightning 16-6 - Oct. 21, Ottawa 4 at Tampa Bay 1; Nov. 3, Tampa Bay 2 at Ottawa 4; March 6, Ottawa 4 at Tampa Bay 0; March 14, Tampa Bay 3, at Ottawa 4.

Top goal scorers: Senators - Heatley 50, Alfredsson 43; Lightning - Lecavalier 35, St. Louis and Modin 31 each.

Goaltending: Senators - Emery 2.85, .903; Lightning - Burke 2.82, .895.

Synopsis: Iffy goaltending at both ends and unremarkable play by both teams down the stretch makes this one a toss-up.

-

(2) Carolina vs. (7) Montreal

Playoff history: Canadiens have 5-1 upper hand all-time, but last time they met the Canes won second-round 2002 series in six.

Last playoffs: Carolina's last appearance was the 2002 run that took them to the final before losing to Detroit in five games; Habs were swept out of 2004 second-rounder by Tampa Bay.

Season series: Carolina swept, outscoring Montreal 25-9 - Dec. 31, Montreal 3 at Carolina 5; Jan. 23, Montreal 3 at Carolina 7; Jan. 31, Carolina 8, Montreal 2; March 16, Carolina 5 at Montreal 1.

Top goal scorers: Hurricanes - Staal 45, Williams 31; Canadiens - Ryder 30, Kovalev 23.

Goaltending: Hurricanes - Gerber 2.76, .906; Canadiens - Aebischer 3.09, .899, or Huet 2.16, .927.

Synopsis: The Canes have clobbered the Habs all season, and it won't stop now.

The talk: "We're obviously not the favoured team," said Montreal GM-coach Bob Gainey. "But we're happy to be playing, happy to be in the playoffs. That was our goal at the beginning of the season, and we're there."

-

(3) New Jersey vs. (6) NY Rangers

Previous meetings: Rangers won all three. Latest was second-round series in 1997.

Last playoffs: Devils out in five against Flyers in 2004; Rangers in for first time since 1997 when they lost conference final to Philadelphia.

Season series: Split - each won four. Oct. 8, Rangers 2 at Devils 3 (OT); Oct. 13, Devils 1 at Rangers 4; Nov. 3, Rangers 4 at Devils 2; Nov. 5, Devils 2 at Rangers 3 (SO), Dec. 20, Devils 3 at Rangers 1; Jan. 22, Devils 1 at Rangers 3; March 4, Rangers 1 at Devils 2; April 9, Rangers 2 at Devils 3.

Top goal scorers: Devils - Gionta 48, Gomez 24; Rangers - Jagr 54, Prucha 30.

Goaltending: Devils - Brodeur 2.56, .911; Rangers - Lundqvist 2.18, .924.

Synopsis: New Jersey has all the momentum. The Devils won their last 11 games, while the Rangers lost their last five, and Lundqvist is just getting back after an injury.

The talk: "It's pretty amazing. Two weeks ago we were worried about getting into the playoffs, and now we're sitting with home ice after winning our division." - Devils forward Jamie Langenbrunner.

"They're hot, but it has to stop somewhere." - Rangers star Jaromir Jagr.

-

(4) Buffalo vs. (5) Philadelphia

Previous meetings: Flyers won 5 of 7 series but Sabres won most recent, which was first round in 2001.

Last playoffs: Sabres, back in for first time in four years, were ousted by Pittsburgh in second round in 2001; Flyers lost seven-game conference final to Tampa Bay in 2004.

Season series: Buffalo won 3 of 4. Dec. 19, Sabres 2 at Flyers 1 (SO); Feb. 2, Flyers 2 at Sabres 4; March 11, Sabres 6 at Flyers 5; April 7, Flyers 4 at Sabres 2.

Top goal scorers: Sabres - Drury 30; Flyers - Gagne 47, Knuble 19.

Goaltending: Sabres - Miller 2.60, .914; Flyers - Esche 3.02, .895 or Niittymarki 2.97, .895.

Synopsis: It's easy to underestimate the Sabres. People have been doing it all season. But they've got a goaltending edge, they won the season series against the Flyers, and they finished their schedule on a high.

The talk: "Overall, that was as good a game as we've played all year long." - Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff after Buffalo's fifth straight win, 4-0 over Carolina on the schedule's final night.

"It's OK. I'm ready for the playoffs." - Flyers star Peter Forsberg, who missed five of the last six games with a groin injury.

Withdrawal Strategies:

Our TV commentator for the Pens uses some distinctive phrases after the Pens score.... I have uused Total Recorder on the NHL highlights to make us a car CD with non-stop goal-scoring. Played back, it sounds like a long and very one-sided game at the net! :~)

Stevie Y is back! The Captain is playing great hockey and the Wings are about to break the all-time record for road wins. It looks pretty good for the boys in Red heading into the playoffs. Ya gotta love a team that wins on the road.

Detroit is looking real good to win the Presidents Trophy. Ottawa is still first in the east but they've lost a couple in a row.

I've only got to see the wings once on T.V. Their not covered here in Quebec as well. However thanks to the computer I listen to most games and enjoy it just as much. The mind formulated great pictures.

I just hope that ESPN will turn around and pick up the regular season next year - I just don't get to see the Wings enough and that's not going to change without our going to satellite tv. OLN seems to be hung up on the Penguins and a select few others while the Stars only play the Joe Boys down here twice a year. MORE HOCKEY PLEASE!!!!
GOOOOOOOOO RRRRRRRRREEEEEEEDDDDDDDD WWWWIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGGGGSSSSS!!

Steve Yzerman - he's still around? Thought he had retired.

It would be a good series if Ottawa and Detroit make it to the finals.

Well Susan, my wonderful "Wings" lost to your team last night. But not all is bad. Steve Yzerman scored again and is finally healthy. What a strong fourth line. Just in time for the playoffs.

All over hockey-fan-dom, there is frantic prognostication about which teams will make the playoffs. Clipboards everywhere are tracking the permutations: "If my team does this and this and this, and the other teams do this and this and this.... we can still make the playoffs!"

I think it would be far more Mudcatlike to simply predict which of our teams are definitely NOT going to be in the playoffs.

I'll start:

NOT IN THE 2006 PLAYOFFS:
Chicago Blackhawks
Pittsburgh Penguins

What are the dates for each round, anyhow? I can't seem to find any hype yet.

As a Leaf's fan *sigh*, they weren't expected to do great this year... the last bunch of losses really have a lot to do with the amount of injuries out to key players (read: Lindros, McCabe, Tucker), though the Head Office did absofreakinlutely nothing to go out and trade for key players to assist, and to dump off players that have been crap (PLEASE send Berg and Allison to the minors and HOPEFULLY someone will claim 'em off of waivers)....

brighter side, McCabe is due to be back tomorrow night. ah well.

Brian

As a Senator's fan I'm ALMOST starting to feel sorry for the Maple Leafs. Seems like there is some work to be done to get the team competitive in the new NHL.

Forsberg missed the third period last night due to a minor groin pull. One good thing about having a bunch of players hurt, there's always someone coming back from injury! Got a couple more coming back this week. I'm a little worried about Primeau though. This is a long time to be out for a concussion. He claims he's coming back though, just not sure when!

Coyotes' captain files suit over claim of ethnic slur

MONTREAL (AP) - Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan sued a member of Parliament on Tuesday, contending that Denis Coderre falsely accused him of making a slur against French speakers during an NHL game.

Doan also demanded in the lawsuit filed in Quebec superior court that Coderre, a former sports minister, make a public retraction.

Coderre had asked Hockey Canada in a letter Dec. 22 to expel Doan from Canada's Olympic hockey team unless he apologized for the alleged slur to referee Stephane Auger at the end of a Dec. 13 game between the Coyotes and Montreal Canadiens. Copies of the letter were released to the media.

Doan denied making the remark and an investigation by the NHL found no evidence he used an ethnic slur.

Doan is seeking reparations for damages to his reputation over "false and defamatory" remarks made by Coderre, both in his letter to Hockey Canada and to the media. The player asked for $200,000 in moral damages and $50,000 in punitive damages. The motion said Doan, who is earning $3 million this season, would donate any money he is awarded to charity.

Coderre could not immediately be reached for comment.

Doan said he "did not make any comment that could be construed as derogatory toward French-speaking people during the hockey game. Such remarks are completely incompatible with the values I espouse as both a hockey player and a proud Canadian."

Doan, from Halkirk, Alberta, was given a misconduct penalty by Auger for verbal abuse of the officials at the end of the game won by Montreal at Bell Centre. Both referees and both linesmen are French speakers.

Coderre repeated the alleged slur in his letter to Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson, a copy of which was sent to Canadian Olympic Committee president Mike Chambers. Chambers concluded there was no evidence Doan made the remark and said he was told it may have been made by another player on the ice.

Doan made a request to Coderre on Dec. 23 that he retract his statements within 10 days.

I'm not really groaning but I did think they were better than they are. Losing Spezza and Alfredson for a while has brought them back to the pack, but maybe that will be a good thng in the long run as the second tier players begin to take up the slack.

Haven't contributed much in the past month. Not because I"ve given up on hockey. In fact I kind of like what I'm hearing. Sure top teams loose some game that make you groan, but hay! It's bound to happen.
