Hello people,

This is an early notice for the next Eurogathering, for all those people who like to book flightes and ferries early. Or who just like to know that I am indeed still alive (yes, I am, but barely as in last year of PhD, will definitely need the distraction!).
Having missed the gathering in la belle France, I'm making sure I won't have to miss the next by being the organiser!

The venue: Cork City, Ireland

The date: 5-6-7 MAY 2006

The deal: bringing all those Irish tunes back home (other tunes permitted of course)

Date is NOT negotiable! This is called tradition :-)

Whelks can be purchased in the English Market, along with other delicacies such as crubeen and drisheen.

Lots of love,

Letty

If it's Cork City, then presumably camping is not an option. What alternatives will be available for accommodation?

Letty, glad to hear you are well and indeed keeping your promise! I'd love to come but just now it is doubtful whether I'll be able to get away on holiday at all next year. Mark me 'maybe', please. (And if I come I'd need to book floorspace somewhere too, not bringing the car.)

As I am in shared accommodation, floor space is highly limited. I will let you know in a while, as I have to ask my roomie for permission.
A few other options:

  • Campervans - I have a small driveway that MIGHT fit (sedan cars fit) one van.
  • Camping - the nearest decent camping is in Blarney, which is 8km from Cork. Plus you can kiss the stone. In town, in fact very near where I live, is the Cork City Camping, which is rumoured to be quite dreary, but may do the job: Cork City (Togher Road), Tel 00353 (0)21 496 1866.Fax 496 1866.
  • Hostels - several available. The first 6 on this page, for example. I have stayed in Kinlay, which is clean, and in Sheila's, which is a bit cramped but cheap.
  • B&Bs. There are a great number of these. Expect to pay between 30 and 40 euros per night. I am not going to put up links until someone asks, as there are plenty to be googled. The Tourist Information will book you a space too.
  • Hotels - again, plenty of choice. Will provide links if there's interest.
  • Self-catering. If people are interested in getting self-catering accommodation, this is often a relatively cheap option if you share. Look here. Self-catering is harder to find in the city. If you have a car, there's plenty of choice outside the town.

I think hostels are the cheap option, esp. as they are mainly in the city centre. If you have to rely on buses, you might find yourself in trouble, as public transport is notoriously unreliable here.

Ways of getting to Cork:

By air: Cork Airport is served by many airlines. Check out Aer Lingus, they have some good offers. EasyJet, Ryanair and BMIbaby all fly to Ireland.

By rail: coming from other parts of Ireland, rail may be an option. The train from Dublin to Cork takes about 3 1/2 hours, and a weekend return costs about 52 euros. There are buses to.

By ferry: Cork is about 3 hours from the Rosslare ferry. Coming straight from the continent, there is a ferry from France to Ringaskiddy, about 20 minutes from Cork.

By bus: Eurolines serve Cork too. 12 euros for a return ticket from Belfast at the moment. I cannot get a price for London-Cork yet, as the system seems to be stuck.

That's all for now, more info will follow gradually.

Letty

Skarpi, that's a pleasant surprise. The year after next year we could opt for Greece and see if you come over for the weekend. Iceland is a fascinating idea too, but as Greece a bit far for a weekend.

Most probably I'll come to Cork. I only can say for sure in the second half of October when I know my summer semester time table. I think I'll take a B&B.

Letty, where (which part of Cork) will the action be? So that I can opt for a B&B at walking (crawling) distance.

Hi Letty, what a pleasant surprise in autumn!

I'm in the same situation like MudGuard, but I hope I can rise the money. Floorspace would be preferable, otherwise I'd go to a hostel (especially after the wonderful experience in Groningen - reaaly fine).

So count me in with a very small question mark.

And how clever you managed it with the date! Finally a year where I don't have to moo some good wishes, but can sing "Happy Birthday" together with a lot of mudcatters for an esteemed and learned colleague!

Edmund and I have piled up a whole heap of Air Miles, so we might be able to swing it. We're still in the "toying with the idea" stage; going overseas two years in a row is kinda rich for our blood (well, mine actually).

Looking forward to seeing the Moos at the Getaway!

Hostels in Cork (I plan to have the Saturday session in the city centre, but nothing has been booked yet):

  • Sheila's, in the city centre.
  • Kinlay House, in the Shandon area. Walking distance of city centre, 'colourful' neighbourhood.
  • Bru Bar and Hostel, also in the centre, can be noisy as right on main clubbing and pubbing street.
  • Kelly's Hostel, walking distance again.
  • International Youth Hostel, the official An Oige one. This is actually the one I stayed in and found clean. Bit further from town (15 minute walk), but regular buses (nr 8).

Hope this is useful! Please don't inundate me with requests for floorspace. As much as I'd love to have you all in my place, I'm back to student accommodation (house-share), and so are most of my friends. This means I am NOT free to take in an unlimited number of guests. I do not mean to be unfriendly or a bad host, or that I don't care about money problems (join the club), it is just not possible!
The spaces I have (currently 5: 1 bed, 1 sofa, 3 air beds) will go to previous gathering organisers first. If they don't take them, I will 'advertise' them. So, so sorry! Will invite you all back when I'm rich and respectable ;-)

Letty

Letty, with so many alternatives I probably won't need floorspace at your place. The only thing is, I may not be able to book well in advance. Just in case: Is anyone looking for shared self-catering acc. and would be willing to let me have bed or floor space (whatever is available)?

Seeing the line-up I really wouldn't like to miss this one! Anyway, how about the Viking? Is he on holiday, or facing another Ofsted invasion?

Brill! Its not on the MayDay weekend this year! So Sandy & I might be able to make it. It would be good to see everyone again. I've still got the Brussels 2002 T-shirt! Thanks also for the hostel links.
Say, is the Cork Singers' Club still going? The website seems very old - latest details are of artists booked in the year 2000! I heard about it a while ago but have never managed to make it. Is it still unaccomanied singing every Sunday?
