Hello all you Mudcatters out in the world!

I haven't been here recently (what means for almost 3 years) but now I need your help! The lyrics of the Song "The Rovin' Dies Hard" by Brian McNeill and performed by the Battlefield Band on "Celtic Hotel" have been posted in the Forum now often.

I want to perform this song with my Folk Band but I can't figure out what the chords really are like, because the key is changing very quickly and often throughout the song.

It would be great if someone of you could post the chords and the keys throughout the song. (The keys because our flute player needs to figure out the melody lines)

The chords needn't be linked to the lyrics because I can hear when the chords change in the record so just the chord after chord for each stanza would be enough. Otherwise it would be great if someone has the time and is able to post it completly (lyrics with chords above)

Thanks to all of you reading and replying to this thread!

Sebastian

Still nobody out there who can help me with this song??
Perhaps someone has the sheet music published by the Battlefield Band and would send me a copy?

Greetings, Sebastian

Sorry, Sebastian. I love the song but I don't play guitar. I'm a trumpeter, and if I had the sheet music I'd send you a copy. Love to get the dots myself.

Hi Sebastian, hope this brightens your day - the chords are from the Battlefield Band book 'Forward with Scotland's Past'

THE ROVIN' DIES HARD (Brian McNeill)

My (G)name's John Mackenzie, I'm a (C)master-at-(D)arms,
I (G)carry my sword and my (C)shield on my (D)shoulder.
I've (G)fought every fight from the (C)Don to the (G)Danube,
None (C)braver, none (G)better, none (D)bolder.
I've (D7)stood wi' Montrose and a(G)gainst him.
I've (D7)battled with Swedes and with (G)Danes.
And I've (G)carried the standard o' (C)many's the (G)army,
Through (C)many's the (G)bloody cam(D)paign.
But now as I sit in the firelight it seems
There's a (D7)distant horizon to the sword buckler's gleam.
Till a (G)pull at the wine brings an (C)old soldier's (G)dreams from a(D)far
- For the rovin' dies hard.

Hi and thank you Marion,

although the sun is clearly shining, my day has really brightened up much more since I read your post.

Is there information in 'Forward with Scotland's Past' about how the key changes throughout the song?

Is it possible that you send me a copy of the page of the book to my e-mail adress or via Fax?It seems that it is not available here in Germany in any bookstore.

Thanks a lot, Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

I'm looking at the music to Rovin' right now and I see no modulations or key changes. I see the key of "G", on sharp, and 6/8 time through out with the exception of the last measure which is 12/8 time.

If you are hearing a modulation could that be attributed to the bagpipe interlude? Bagpipes are not typically played in "G" but I'm no piper.

Great song.

Don

Just putting up the thread in the forum for Marion to ask her if she forgot me already.

Can someone else perhaps help me to get the sheet music for The Rovin' Dies Hard out of the Battlefield Band Songbook ''Forward with Scotland's Past'?

Thanks, Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,
There's an email on its way to you with a picture of the music attached. At the back of the book there is this comment about the song.

"THE ROVIN' DIES HARD - Are there more Scots outside Scotland than in it? Each wave of emigration in our country's history seems to wash home the seeds of the next one. Gernerations of this process have bred a kind of Scot who is driven to roam, a compulsive traveller whose prsonality becomes more identifiably Scottish the further it gets from home. Brian (McNeil) is fascinated by the panorama of Scotland's history and in this song which looks across three centuries of wanderers he wonders whether we, the current generation of Scotland's musicians, are the latest group to follow the lead. (Different verses in F, Bb and G)"

Let me know if there's a problem
All the best
Marion

Hi Marion,

I received your email and I can't tell you how many hours it will save me because I needn't to write down the meldody lines on my own for our flute player. And the comment that you wrote also includes what I asked for many times before: The three different keys in the stanzas....

Thank you very much!!

Sebastian
