It sure would be nice to have a president I could respect.

George Bush:
It seemed like to me they based some of their decisions on the word of -- and the allegations -- by people who were held in detention, people who hate America, people that had been trained in some instances to disassemble -- that means not tell the truth."

And this while saying the detainees in American prisons aren't being mistreated. How many reports does it take for him to admit there's a problem? How do you fix a problem you won't admit exists?

Frankly, I understand his reasoning. You 'disassemble' a fact and then announce it with the spin you want. He's been doing it all along, you know. His facts and the black and white facts we can all see and evaluate are not the same animal. Alice in Wonderland couldn't say it any better.

Although I voted for Bush & continue to support the Republican party, I have to say that I cringed when I heard him not only misuse "disassemble," but then incorrectly define it (as if we, collectively, are too stupid to understand the words he uses). Hmmm...on second thought, maybe we *do* need definitions for the words he uses. Sigh.

"At least it seems that Bush's problem is down to being too close to the bottom of the gene pool. The UK have to put up with a lying sneaky toad who has a modicum of intelligence." Jacqui C

That brings up the question: Which is worse, having a figurehead leader who is incurious, ill informed, just plain stupid when he is left out in the rain and who has kneejerk compliance with his cohorts and supporters' wishes or a leader that knowingly twists facts and lies to his people? Both of them do exactly what they want to do.

And which is which? Mix and Match.

Like Martin Gibson, Bush has serious problems seeing the lay of the actual world around him; this is because he is obsessed with a small set of fixed ideas which are not compatible with the world but whihc have been taken in under overwhelm, duress, alcohol, drug trips or some other confusion. These fixed ideas prevent lots of confusion in the short term because you don't have to think any further than the nearest prefabricated conclusion, but they don't do much for real thought and they don't solve real issues.

Europeans and many other peoples have a different view of the US than many of us have, Marvin, a view that we get from our media and ourselves. The US is NOT the most generous or the most farsighted or the wisest or the best informed nation in the world. Heck, we're not even the healthiest nor do we live the longest nor do more of our babies survive infancy than the people of a host of other countries. Even Cuba's babies have a better chance of surviving birth than do ours.

Of course your facts Ebbie are truly based in your twisted perception of being a loser in a society that has a hard time with babbling old broads and not much else.

Must be hard to be so bitter against your own homeland. I would say that Cuba would welcome you to live there and you would be much happier.

I am not bitter about my homeland; I am bitter about the 'leaders' we have in Ottawa.

A few of our Prime Ministers have not had English as a first language. Canadians have always allowed for that. I can't ever recall a PM being pilloried for mispronunciations or errors while speaking the 'other' language of Canada. Hell, Joe Clark spoke French when he was in Quebec. I don't doubt that many native French speakers cringed when he did so, but no one laughed at his attempts. German speakers didn't laugh at Kennedy when he tried to say that he too was a Berliner. But when Bush talks, I am in awe of his ability to so thoroughly fuck up the language that it becomes a new adventure in hearing. Gawd. Surely someone can get him a translator to work with him when he addresses the people of the USA and the World. It's embarrassing.

I am an American more real than thou, old sod. I speak my own truth, uninfluenced by churches or temples, except for the Temple of the Golden Globes; and I sign my real name to what I say.

I have never decried American help. My complaint, and you kn ow this full well, is against American stupidity (personified by the current Administration) and American brutality (personified by yourself and the rest of Bush's mindless minions.)

I think as a nation we are capable of far, far better than a two-bit scammer like W.

Is there any chance that everyone would be willing to simply ignore Martin Gibson? I know he's entertaining and all, but it becomes impossible to have a conversation when he's around if folks keep feeding him opportunities to be an asshole and then responding to him yet again when he obliges. Pretty soon we don't have a conversation, we just have Martin Gibson. I'm tired of it.

One of Bush's more irksome characteristics (and he has plenty of them) is his tendency to say something and then tell us what it means as if we're a bunch of four-year-olds and he's our kindergarten teacher. I sometimes expect him to ask us "Can you say that?" which has led me to label his speechmaking style the "Mister Rogers Mode of Rhetoric".

Well, Mr. Bush, you're no Fred Rogers!

Amos, a real American honors the phrase "in God we Trust." He has morals that this country was founded on. He is not a sniveling chicken shit atheist who tries to change history.

You've always hated the American government no matter who has been in office. You are just a chronic whiner.

As the song goes, "the revolution won't be televised." At this point, it won't even be on the radio either. Give up. Blow up.

Well, I must say that I am impressed that Martin quoted the Last Poet's signature line "The revolution will not be televised".

Here is an excerpt of that pre-Hip-Hop rap:

"The revolution will not be televised.

There will be no highlights on the eleven o'clock

news and no pictures of hairy armed women

liberationists and Jackie Onassis blowing her nose.

The theme song will not be written by Jim Webb,

Francis Scott Key, nor sung by Glen Campbell, Tom

Jones, Johnny Cash, Englebert Humperdink, or the Rare Earth.

The revolution will not be televised."

-snip-

Click The Revolution Will Not Be Televised for the complete words to this 'rap' written by Gil Scott-Heron.

Click The Last Poets for information on this group.

Though this wasn't the 'revolution' that The Last Poets rapped about, "Shock and Awe", 24 hour news stations, and impedded journalists put lie to the fact that scenes of armed struggles wouldn't be televised as they were occurring.

Not that we are seeing all of the horrors of the Iraqi war. Maybe if we see these scenes on our television sreens, more pressure would be put on the powers that be to stop our involvement in a war that was largely manufactured for riches and for ratings.

Thank you, Azizi. Years ago, a great Chicago alternative rock radio station, WXRT used to play this Gil Scott-Heron piece all of the time. I remember it quite well and hear it in my head when I read all of the anti-American twisted radical bullshit on this forum.

Morons here like Amos sell me short in my knowledge because of their blind ranting. You see his real colors when he is called on the carpet. Just another pseudo-intellectual who gets riled into a big "fuck you" when he is shown to be the common moron he really is.

You are just lying, like a broken record of abuse. I do think you have deep personal problems, though; why else would you so continuously lash out with such abusive labels? I am about as much a Jew-hater as you are, you double-cross-eyed dipshit. What I hate is small-mindedness, and the poisoning of human communications, an evil art in which you have taken much practice, for reasons you cannot or will not reveal.

You spout generalities and ad hominem attacks over and over, painting anyone who crosses your bows with these stupid categories of hatred, over and over. It really gets old.

You don't know the difference between opposing bad policies and bad ideas and "hating America" or "hating Jews". That is really lame, half-assed thinking, and you know it. This sort of venom comes not from the present issues or the present dialogue, but from some wellspring of overwhelming anger which you will not reveal. But that is your problem, and you can spit your poisonous attitudes all you like without relieving it.

Something I've been thinking about lately is Bush & Company's responsibility for the torture and abuse of prisoners. Even if they didn't order the torture in the first place, as soon as they found out it was going on it became their responsibility to make it stop. Since it hasn't stopped, we are forced to assume they approve of the torture. Trying to say it is being done by rogue interrogators is a bunch of crap. If George Bush wanted the abuse to stop, it would be stopped. As soon as he became aware of the torture, he became responsible for any further torture.

And what about the news reports about the "mishandling" of the Quran? One said a guard's urine came through an air vent and splattered the Quran. Huh?? What's that mean? Urine came through an air vent?? Why aren't they coming out and saying a guard peed on a detainee and his holy book? And why haven't they put a stop to this kind of behavior?

John

[Posted first on another thread, but relevant here and on many others.]

Considering the number of threads that start out as this one did, discussing a subject that supporters of the Bush administration would rather people not discuss, it may very well be that Martin Gibson is receiving PMs, as he claims, encouraging him to do what he does.

And what is it that he does? He jumps into a discussion, but not with any rational arguments; he just slings insults and abuse at those who have something reasonable to say, diverting attention from the subject to himself. And unfortunately, people fall for it when they could be—and should be—ignoring him and continuing the discussion. Rather than doing so, they spend their efforts slagging Martin Gibson, who doesn't really care because he's accomplished his purpose. He's ended any serious discussion on the subject.

It's quite possible that other people do PM him and encourage him to do this. As someone said on another thread, Martin Gibson is their performing monkey. Or to change the analogy, they encourage him, and he volunteers to become a red herring.

I suppose it's futile to tell people that the way to defeat him (and his puppeteers) totally is to simply ignore him.
