From: GUEST,Ekhi

Can't do with the handful of detractors snipeing away at something they wish to fail. What kind of twisted mind-set is that?

Why I'll be attending for the first time....
The prospect of a holiday in decent weather in what looks one helluva fine setting. But mostly....

What a line up! I'm keen to see ALL these and many others too.
(listed purely in alphabetical order)

Ashley Hutchings' Rainbow Chasers
Battlefield Band
Bellowhead
Damien Barber (Demon Barber Roadshow? Website doesn't make that clear.)
Dr. Faustus
Duncan McFarlane Band
Harvey Andrews
Jez Lowe
John Kirkpatrick
Kathryn Tickell Band
Last Night's Fun
Les Chauffers Pieds
Little Johnny England
Show of Hands
Strawhead
Whapweasel

...and there'll be dancing, sessions...and beer!
That'll do for me.
Peace. Ekhi (borrowing someone elses PC to finally contribute a tuppence worth)

You could call it the Mary Ellen Carter Festival, cos it is rising again! I've only ever been to Sidmouth once, and that was in 2001, when I was with the Solidarity choir visiting from Oz.

But for a little thing called money, and being on the other side of the world, I'd love to come this year and enjoy it in its new incarnation, but alas, I can only follow its progress with interest from a distance. I'd love to meet some of you people - oh well, maybe another year.

I certainly wish everyone involved my best wishes and hopes for its success!

Ekhi's gone now.
Just me here.
But being 'positive' about something is just what she meant when she coined the 'thread-head'.
Let the 'downers' put up their own she said, they don't have to even read the positive one.
I'll be there this year too.
You can count on it!

15 posts before we get to the first whinge. What you doing in here Steve? You can tell from the thread title it will only vex you. It seems to me from all of the Sidmouth threads I have looked at over the past few months I see more and more positive catters and a very few, mostly guest, often anonymous spoilers. I'm sure it would be the same old names if we actually got to see them.

Looking forward to a great summer of varied festival going.

Hi all
We have never been to Sidmouth. My husband always said he fancied going for his 50th which is this year. (Tues 2nd). We thought of going down on the Monday, after Cambridge, which we always go to because it's just up the road from us.
What can you recommend to us? I can't find out who's playing which days, so we'll just see what's on nearer the time.
Can you recommend a decent campsite? Preferably a permanent one rather than a 'festival' one.

Any other advice?

Thanks in advance.

Anne

The concerts are there, the camping's there, the bus is there, the dancing's there, the Anchor Garden's happening, the Blackmore Gardens is on, the trade stands are turning up and there are some extra venues that are new. As usual I'll spend my time in the Bedford sessions, as well as taking in some of the concerts. I'm really looking forward to Sidmouth 2005 and 2006. Well done and thank you to the organisers, you're doing a great job.

Mrs Annie, it depends what you like doing. If you like fringe-type sessions, there are music sessions going on most of the time in the New Tavern and The Radway, unaccompanied singing in the Anchor and sessions in the Bedford. There are various concerts. Can't recommend them yet as they are mostly new venues, so you will have to go and see what they are like! There are a number of dance venues and other singarounds. Personally, I highly recommend the Anchor Middle Bar, sea songs in the Middle Bar on Tuesday (I think), Silly songs in the Middle Bar on Thursday lunch time, singing in the sea on Thursday afternoon, and the ceilidh which won't be happening in the ford on Friday and in which lots of people won't be dancing and enjoying themselves (you'll have to find out about that when you come too!)

As far as camping goes, there is a festival camp site at Bulverton (the same place as usual) with showers, loos and food. If you go to the Sidmouth Festival web site it should give you info on that.

Oh...and I run a fringe event, "Ashby de la Zouch Folk Club" in the Volunteer on the first Friday evening, so drop in there and let us know who you are....perhaps we can turn it into a Mud gather??

Love Lynne

Mrs Annie - There are 2 campsites that may well suit. THORN CAMPSITE, Salcombe Regis and Kings Down Tail. There is a small bus that runs to both during Folk Week and it runs 'till late (about 2a.m. I think). Visit the sessions and the concerts and I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Yes, John's right, tho' there are actually three.

Thorn
Salcombe Regis Caravan park, where I'm staying.
Kingsdown Tail.

The last two have their own websites, and you can book on line, but I advise speed as they tend to fill up about now.

Mrs Annie - info about programme should be available in May.

Lynne - you forgot to mention singarounds in the bar of the Manor Pavilion, hosted by me and Tim Edwards. Also concerts in the Manor Pavilion, including a performance of the Cornish Songwriters' Unsung Heroes. And there will be the Volunteer "In the Tradition" lunchtime gatherings.

And it also seems that Duncan McFarlane will be making his debut in Sidders. (Welcome Duncan, and please do look in at the Theatre Bar!)

So positive news all round....

It's Part Thorn campsite, not Thorn. We've stayed there for the last several Sidmouth's, though this year we will be back on the festival site at Bulverton. Bonecruncher has put info about both Part Thorn and the festival site on one of the other Sidmouth threads.

Sorry Kitty, I couldn't remember the details...but I did say other sessions and singarounds.

As this is a positive thread, I'm positive I will have a good time!!

Mrs Annie
In the current Touring Parks Guide (available free from your local caravan dealer or repairer) there are three commercial sites serving Sidmouth and one at Saslcombe Regis.
All are more than walking distance from the town, so a car will be needed.
Kingsdown Tail, tel. 01297 680313
Oakdown, tel. 01297 680387
Putts Corner, Sidbury, tel. 01404 428785/01342 327490
Salcombe Regis, 01395 514303

All but the Sidbury site are on the main A3052 Exeter to Lyme Regis road.
In my early days at Sibmouth I stayed at Oakdown. Well recommended.

If you need to save costs, the festval sites are much more reasonable!

Colyn.

Thanks for the welcome Kitty and Don. Appreciated!

Will make a bee-line for the places you mention.
The band plays on the last Friday, but I'll be
aiming to be there most of the week.
Aim to sample every bit I can.

Might just make it to Chip'm again Kitty!
That disreputable Otley dance team are twisting my arm to come
and play for 'em a third year!
Snag is, can't take their drinking pace!
I'll pop in to your sing-sesh once again if I get there.
Duncan

Small correction here.

1. Salcombe Regis, Part Thorn, and Oakdown are off the A3025, but signposted.

2. During festival there is a fixed fare coach service to all these sites, fare last year 1.20, which runs up to 2.15am.

From past experience I can thoroughly recommmend Salcombe Regis site for both caravans and camping. Lots of familiar faces and you might catch Merek and Dary burning sausages of an evening.

Most of the camp sites being mentioned are quite some way out of town.

Many miles out of town in some cases.

Can someone please tell me if the Bulverton campsite is definitely operational this year?

Also what about the big campsite just behind the Arena?

I recall reading a previous thread some weeks ago concerning a lack of volunteer stewards for the campsites this year, possibly due to the lack of a festival season ticket for volunteer stewards and all the rest of us.

Has the stewards situation improved?

I'm still in two minds about whether to attend this year.

Yes the Bulverton site is definitely operational this year.

There is a bus running to and from the other campsites regularly until 2.15am. They aren't so far out as you think...in fact Part Thorn where we have stayed for the past five years, is only aobut the same distance out of town as Bulverton, and it's a lovely walk down the cliff path (though up is not so good!)

The campsite behind the arena hasn't been a campsite for years.

As far as I know, they are still looking for more campsite stewards, though there are some....were you wanting to steward on the campsite then?

Love Lynne

I'm sure if you do bring back the International Arena and the Real Sidmouth International festival everyone here will say well done, whoever you are.

Are you doing something to bring this about?

At last - I've finally got round to registering, so I'm no longer a Guest.
I was positive that this HAD to be the first Sidmouth thread to post to. I'm positive I'll be at Sidmouth and I'm positive I'll have a good time.
Where? Well...The Middle Bar; Singing in the Sea; the Volunteer; the Manor Pavilion (especially to see the Cornwall Sonwriters show 'Unsung Heroes' again). And I was delighted to see Harvey Andrews added to the guest list.

And I'm also positive that I'll be dancing with HERBACEOUS BORDER every evening on the Esplanade (Sunday onwards 6.00 - 7.00pm) and I hope lots of you catters will come and dance with us. Anyone can come and join in (or just watch) as those of you at Miskin recently will know. (Lynne, I hope the bruises didn't take too long to fade!!)

I know I'm going to have lots of fun.

Sue, I shall add dancing with Herbaceous Border to my list of things to do this year at Sidmouth! Richard will almost certainly do so too. I still can't kneel down on that knee though! And I'm not sure that saying "I hope the bruises didn't take too long to fade" is a good way to encourage people to dance with you!!

I've added the Bedford to my list, Don - though the unaccompanied stuff is what turns me on most.

And Lynne, the fact that you are 'Up For It' again, despite the bruises, just goes to show people how much fun it is. (Border morris dancing that is)

Forgot to say 'musicians welcome' as well as dancers. And if you can't wait til Sidmouth, join in with us at Upton and Alcester and elsewhere first.

Well I'm also a Guest Robbie but I'm trying to be a positive one though I'm still in two minds as to whether I'll attend this year.

Thank you to those who answered my questions above about campsites. At least the camping situation is now clarified.

I know the sessions will be good as always but it's the lack of the international side, no arena shows whatsoever, and persisting doubts about plans for the Ham that still concern me.

I'll wait and see how things develop before deciding whether to head due SW with my tent again.

Well I guess one of the good things about no season tickets this year, is that you don't actually have to decide much in advance. You can book camping, but it's easy enough to get it without booking, so you can come down without too mcuh advance planning...

More q's about camping - can anyone give some facts from experience please? Sorry to keep raising this again but I need to get somewhere booked and I'm so confused.

I've worked out there are 2 campsites at the top of the hill - Salcombe Regis 'proper' site (they sent me a brochure) and 'Part Thorn' which is on the golf course and a temp site for the festival though it has a permanent toilet/shower block. Am I ok so far?

I also have gathered that the venue (marquee?) for the LNE is also at the top of this hill. How close is it to either of the sites and is it loud enough to stop you from sleeping? A weekend of no sleep I can just about put up with but not a whole week.

Second, which one is more likely to have a decent space for my tent when I turn up on the Monday? (having booked obviously).
Does the 'proper' site have laid out spaces for tents or does it squeeze in as many as it can?
I have asked them these questions but they don't seem to be very communicative.

Anybody stayed at Kings Down Tail? Is it walkable? quiet? crowded?

Lastly (if you have not all fallen asleep by now) can anybody tell me about the other site which takes tents, Core Hill i.e. exactly where is it?

thanks in advance, there's a lot of really helpful people on here, hope they can help me!

Mrs Annie,

Have you checked www.sidmouthfolkweek.org.uk.

The old campsite at former festival campsite at Bulverton will also be operating and ther will be a bus service.

The above website is the one that contains the latest "official" information.

Mrs Annie - I've stayed at Kings Down Tail many times and it's a nice quiet site with proper facilities. The very late bus will be running from there past the LNE at Salcombe Regis (at least I think that is where the LNE is)- and there is always room from Monday onwards. Being that much further on I don't think noise will be a problem. Don (WYSYWIG)Thompson should be able to help.

I've just got my receipt through from the main, Bulverton, campsite. This year they are allocating plot numbers, which hasn't been done before. It doesn't say whether they are being allocated in order of booking or of arrival.

I've been told that the campsite numbers will be restricted (maybe about half of last year) and that the other sites, being smaller need booking pretty soon.

The main campsite, which in recent years has taken up two fields, will only be the first, main field this year. I think it will probably still be fine as numbers are going to be down quite a long way on the normal. Malcolm Burrow's Part Thorn site is pretty big and I've never yet seen it full. I also forgot...last year he opened up another field in Sidmouth, up a lane opposite Waitrose and last time I spoke to him he was intending to do it this year too....you could check with him, and ask any questions about the other site too...not sure if his umber is on the website, but I have it if anyone wants it.

The LNE this year is supposed to be on the Part Thorn field. don't know how that will work out. The us will be running to and from LNE.

I thought it might be a good time to resurrect this 'positive' thread of Ekhi's.

Just to put on here too that Hobgoblin music are sponsoring the acts on in the afternoon down at The Ham Marquee....yay all you Hobgoblins!!

Also....our fish and chip shop, (very important piece of info this bit! ;0)...) has all been revamped!

We've always had the best fish'n'chips in the world in Sidmouth,(;0)..) down in The White Horse Cafe, almost next to 'Forever England' It used to be run by two brothers, who I think are Algerian. One was always so happy and one always so grumpy that those names eventually stuck within our family. However, Happy and his lovely wife Annie, have now moved back to Paris and Grumpy has taken over. But.....something magical has happened....Grumpy has now turned into Happy!!! He is so pleased to have the shop to himself, apparently he and his brother never got on!

So...now he's completely revamped everything....new furniture, no more 197O's tat....in with 'real wood' and everything is a gorgeous shade of turquoise! AND....the chips have got EVEN better. I didn't think that was possible, (not that I eat many of them of course! ;0)...) but they have!

AND....EVEN BETTER NEWS!! The man in Trumps who was extremely rude last year to someone 'very high up' in the folk world is not only leaving town.....he's going all the way to New Zealand! Yeeeeyyyyyyy!!!! AND....he's not coming back!!!!! How cool is that?

And....'Tickled Pink' are playing at The Late Night Extra!

And....it's only 82 days to go!

Too much excitment for one evening...I have to go and drink tea now to calm myself down!

Mmmmmm....Turquoise and Chips! Perfect!! Do you think that Turqoise could be the new Cod? ;0)

Anyway Bonecruncher, you'll be so overwhelmed at the taste of Happy's chips that you'll be totally unaware of the colour scheme! Besides those chips should only ever be eaten on the beach.....with all the music and voices drifting all around you and the waves swishing in and out against the pebbles.

No....GrumpyGuest, you couldn't be more wrong! The guy left/is leaving for New Zealand because he knows that Sidmouth is going to be full of lovely folk people again this year. He doesn't like Folk Festivals! I think that's why he's leaving! ;0)

And now all this talk of NZ has made me remember those two beautiful Maori ladies who sang at The Arena last year, I think it was last year anyway....but I've googled for info about them, but can't find anything.

Anyone remember who they were?

I see the ticket question rears its head again.

As far as Im aware there are no season tickets, so I suppose when the final line up is agreed and signed then tickets will be available. When last I heard this will be early in June, still two full months before the festival happens. Not quite the same as Cambridge, but almost.

Someone from the Festival sent me an e-mail yesterday saying there should be some news in a couple of weeks. I hope so.

Trouble is that many folkies have already booked their holidays, made their plans etc. for this summer. I have to give two months notice of my holiday dates so I am fast running out of time and may just decide to go to Cambridge, Eastleigh and Broadstairs instead this summer.

I fear the late announcement is bound to have an impact on the number of paying customers especially with no season tickets being available.

That's bound to reduce income and have a 'knock-on' effect on the financial viability of plans for future festivals.

I shouldn't think it will make a scrap of difference to all the sessions and dance displays but it could make a very big difference to the star name concerts and it is those star names and their requirements wot cost the money.

Dear 'Guest Phil',

Are you a Sidmouth Worrier, or a Sidmouth Warrior?

I think you a Worrier! I do! ;0)

Now myself and loads of other people on this thread are all Sidmouth Warriors....in fact we've almost got our very own tribe together! You can join us if you'd like. It's great fun! We battle through insults and slice through doubt, we duel with dragons and wrestle with witches! We've seen off all sorts of miseries and moaners, we've hurled our swords of light at The Princes and Princesses of Darkness......all for one reason and one reason only.....SIDMOUTH! :0)

Now it seems to me that all those who truly want to come to Sidmouth will make sure they are here for the First week of August and nothing, but nothing will keep them away! It really is that simple. Absolutely no stress involved at all. All these fine Warriors will soon be heading down to this little town here in Devon, from all parts of the Country because they BELIEVE in Sidmouth and what is has always stood for, what it still stands for.

None of us expected it to be here a few months back, but it is! None of us expected 2006 to be considered, but it is! None of us ever thought that people would come back, but they are! None of us thought the town would want the Festival again, but it does! None of us thought the rats would leave so quickly and 'new blood' would come pouring into the shops, but they have!

And so, if you think that in the middle of May you should start to cast doubt on Sidmouth being successful....well....you'll have to get through all of us first! For The Sidmouth Warriors have put a protective light around this Folk Week, which nothing and no-one is going to break through!

Still, if it will make you happy to go to Broadstairs or Cambridge instead, well...off you go. Mind you, they might be filled with other Worriers and your holiday could be totally ruined through An Agony of Angst and Sidmouth Hand-Wringing....in fact you could end up in need of Serious Anti-Angst Therapy! All those people wandering around looking at The Sidmouth Folk Week leaflets. I can almost hear the sobs from here....

"Oh Woe is us....we've let it go! Oh woe, woe and thrice woe....Sidmouth IS happening!!! If only we'd listened...if only we'd had faith....if only...if only......!"

And there we'll all be in Sidmouth, in The Marquee watching loads of top acts, in The Bedford Hotel listening to all the sessions, in Dukes Hotel watching all the acts there and the Manor Pavillion, the Late Night Extras, the Ceilidhs and so many other things.....having a great time.

However, if you'd like to leave your name and address, The Sidmouth Warriors will send you a postcard from Sidmouth Folk Week so you can see what you're missing! They do some great cards down in Fords, where the photograph shop is. Would you prefer a picture of the seafront filled with Morris Dancers and Musicians, one of The Bowling Green, (I wonder if the Annual Sidmouth Streaker is going to turn up this year and give us his usual 'Display Amongst The Bowls!)....or a lovely picture of The Sidmouth Fiddler, up in Connaught Gardens?

Just let me know and I'll sort it all out for you Phil my dear....and remember, wherever you spend your holipops....relax and try not to worry too much. You may decide to go to all sorts of other Festivals but there'll not be one to touch Sidmouth Folk Week this year! ;0)

Lots of Love

Lizzie :0)

PS: Don't forget...you'll always be welcome to join us...I have a spare sword....a blue light saber to be precise...come and be a Jedi/Siddy Knight Phil, you know you really want to! ;0)

May The Folk Week Force Be With You! :0)

As I understand it, all events are individual, so you may need to go to more than one source to get tickets: but never fear, you doubters and moaners, there are many festivals where tickets are only printed a month or so before the actual date, and yet they still play to packed houses/sell out, etc.I tried to get tickets in advance for a festival I went to recently, and was told "most people buy them when they get here" - and yes, full houses because they had quality acts, as has Sidmouth Folkweek 2005.

There IS a season ticket available after all according to the Hobgoblin advertisement in the 'fRoots' magazine but it costs 135 per person and only covers the Ham Marquee.

That must make it the most expensive festival season ticket anywhere in the U.K.

We've posted under 'Sidmouth Tickets' giving our views on this and adding that, reluctantly, we have cancelled our B&B booking for Sidmouth this year as tickets are being priced above our pocket.

We congratulate Hobgoblin on sponsoring the Ham Marquee but feel that a 135 season ticket for just one venue does not represent good value for money.

It's not the fault of Hobgoblin or whoever is organising the Ham Marquee. We guess it just reflects the fact that the costs of staging concerts in a marquee on the Ham cannot be covered without sponsorship from the local authority.

As the local authority has axed its sponsorship of Sidmouth Folk Week the concert costs can only be recouped through very high ticket prices but if these prices deter people like us from attending then the future for Sidmouth is bleak indeed.

It's all so very sad but we hope those who still attend the dances and free events at Sidmouth have a great time even if, like us, they cannot afford the cost of a season ticket for the main concert marquee.

Phil & Maggie McBride

I'm not sure that 135 for seven days worth of concerts is exceptionally high. And if you weren't going to make full use of it, you could still buy tickets for individual concerts. Also, there are other concert venues as well as the Ham marquee. and lots of other events too, so why cancel just because you feel you can't afford ONE venue?

See tickets thread for a repeat of Phil and Maggies positive, then negative post. As Lynne says ,individual tickets are avialable at reasonable costs, so just buy the bits you like, and only the season ticket if it presents good value - i.e. you want to see more than 7 or 8 concerts - your choice!

In fact, over this last year I've laughed so much that my wrinkles now start at the corners of my eyes and go right down the side of my face!! The things I've sacrificed for Sidmouth! And I'm only 19!! ;0)

Must be her sense of humour - or she started her family very young?

I'm beginning to think Lizzie is a fake.

Read all her posts and you will see she often contradicts herself.

I think she's just one of those trolls who post here to annoy everyone else.

Her sole aim seems to be to drive all genuine folkies as far away from Sidmouth as possible.

I was thinking the same Trish. I'm not sure what any of this bitching and squabbling has to do with Sidmouth Folk Week. Can we please get back on topic?

The real point, Scooby, is that it's got to be good if there's going to be another, so we'll do whatever it takes to make it so.

None of us are daft enough to think it will be like any Sidmouth festival in the last ten years, but we're damn sure it will be happening in the spirit of the early Sidmouth festivals, which is exactly what is needed to rebuild it to its more recent glory.

I have nothing but admiration for those who are working their butts off toward a successful conclusion, and, while I don't agree with telling doubters to go elsewhere, I can appreciate that people who are passionate about anything can sometimes overreact to negative comment. We don't all have the patience of Job.

I too saw the McBrides as disappointed folkies, not trolls, and felt that some encouragement might have changed their minds.

I do have a serious problem, tho', with the let's show them mean shopkeepers brigade. The perfect way to finish Sidmouth permanently is to antagonise the local residents. Given the certainty that the majority of residents are NOT folkies, they ARE doing us a favour by putting up with the parking difficulties, queues in shops, and other irritations that thousands of festival goers inevitably cause, and we should not allow ourselves to forget that fact.

This will be a GREAT festival once the music starts. Believe it!

"The perfect way to finish Sidmouth permanently is to antagonise the local residents" - GUEST above.

Sadly I think many local residents are already antagonised.

All the neighbours I speak to are delighted to hear the Festival proper is not happening this year.

They just want Sidmouth to be a quiet rural backwater again.

Sad. Very sad.

My inlaws can! When I first met my Sidmouthian boyfriend over 30 years ago (subsequently to become hubby), the festival to them was "the dancing" back in the EFDSS days. Now, the block in which they live comprises 2 houses permanently occupied and 8 holiday homes!!

On the other subject, I got the same email as Don, although I had already given my tenner and ALL my contact details including snail-mail address to the newly-formed "Friends of Sidmouth Folk Week".
I am still very positive about all to come, and there are enough positive people about to make it work!
