I am after info on the Saddleworth Murders in 1832 and "M" suggested I contact the Saddleworth Historical Society. Unfortunately their email does not work - at least from my terminal here in Melb. Aust. Can anyone suggest some other way I can contact them. Also, is Greenfield(s?), near Saddleworth in W/Yorkshire now a weir or dam? If so, when was it flooded?

Don, as you are probably aware Saddleworth is an area not a place as such, There is a folk museum in Uppermill which may have a web site. The twons around include Greenfield, Delph, Diggle and others

Saddleworth is not a place in its own right but a collection of villages. This website gives more info and may well be helpful.

As I live in Greenfield, I can tell you that it's not a weir or a dam....at least, it wasn't when I left home this morning!!

Have you got the info you need now? If not, you can give me a call on 01457 870391, and I can give you some contact details.

Ali

Hi Don,
Raggytash seems to have come up with more of the story than anyone else after your original query about Bill's O' Jack's Murder: Poem.

I suspect that the Saddleworth Historical Society website is an labour of love by some dedicated amateur(s) who may not check the email frequently. I'm sure that you will get an answer eventually.

It would be nice if you could share some of the poem here, and say where you found it. How did it turn up in Australia after all these years?

M

It's not that the Saddleworth Hist. Soc. don't respond, it's that the emails are returned as not correct - and I've tried sending through a number of different servers.
IN THE MEANTIME you Saddleworth people:-
I have been told that the area around the site of the Moor Cock Inn was turned into a dam/reservoir, last century. Is this correct? Must get the liner notes right, you know.
Keep me informed folks!

In answer to M's enquiry:-
My G.G.Father ( b. Meltham) honeymooned at the Moor Cock Inn in 1876, no sniggering please. He brought a post card sized copy of the poem with him to Aus. that sat on the mantlepiece at our beach house named Bill's o' Jack's, which I think was the alternate name for the M.C. Inn. The poem was destroyed, along with the house, in the 1983 bush fires that burnt out most of the south coast. We built a new house on the site and it too is named Bill's o' Jack's, althought he poem is called Bill o'Jack's. I have set it to music, which is going on my next cd, along with A Dalesman's Litany and a lovely song by Sue Haithewaite. Sort of a homage to my West Riding roots.
Hope this of interest, M.
PS: My grandfather, who was born in Marsden, said to us when we were children that you can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell him much. Surely this couldn't be true?

you have to remember Don that Raggy is from over the border although he now resides in what my husband calls Gods country or Yorkshire - I sing over in Saddleworth ( disputed Yorkshire Lancashire country and over there they say

When God made the Earth he kept all the special jewels and put them together and made a special place which he called his own country - this place we call Saddleworthshire!

What have I started over there between red and white rabbit and raggy?! I thought the war was over some centuries ago. Anyway, as my g.father would say,"It doesn't matter what colour a rose is - so long as it's white." That should settle the matter.

Ms Croucher, would I be correct in assuming you're not from Lancashire, even the yorkies I know sat "thick in't ead" cos they tend to be

Don I know you mean well but the "thing" between Rabbit and myself is strictly that, between Rabbit and myself......... Rabbit you still haven't had my babies

As for Yorkshire being God's county ..... well the leader of the Church of England is the monarch and as such is God's representative in England. The Monarch is also the Duke of Lancaster (irrespective of gender)Thus the Duke of Lancaster is the Monarch, the Monarch is God's representative in England, thus the Duke of Lancaster is God's representative in England ........... looks to me like God choice of county was Lancashire

to put you straight Raggy Yorkshire is Gods country so he doesnt need an earthly representative to convert the heathens to his way of thinking unlike in Lancashire where they still eat missionaries!!

when can I have your babies Raggy - getting desperate!

Red & White rabbit,
Hope you see this. Glad the test email got through. I think I said that if you received it to send a reply. One didn't come back so I figured it had not reached you when in fact it had. This is starting to sound Irish, so will stop for the moment. Send me an email, and see what happens.

Rabbit
The reason I have lived in Yorkshire for almost 23 years is the fact that I was sent on a mission to cconvert the heathen horder on this side of the Pennines. It is a fruitless task as one cannot educate pork as they say

My babies are ready and waiting for you anytime you feel you're in the mood

why do you want to educate porcine animals Raggy?- obviously a Lancashire thing to think that you need to educate farm animals!

I was sent from the south to try to educate you Northerners I see I am going to have my work cut out dealing with the North West - have managed to conquer the north east quite well!

Sue,
I give up, I really do. The test email gets through but no others! Yours has not arrived. emails to Joe Offer get through just fine. Have you received the package yet? It was posted the 14th September. Should have been only 7 days delivery. Try sending an email to parkfraser@hotmail.com         see how that goes. Now back to your across the border spat!
Don
