Being from "over there", my wife is always correcting me on my English. She insists that the word "schedule" is properly pronounced as "shedule." She also reminds me that in the "proper" English alphabet, the letter Z is spoken as "Zed." So, here are some stupid questions:

Why isn't "school" pronounced "shool"?

And why is it "scheme" and not "sheme"?

Why is zebra not "zedebra", or "zoo" "zedoo"?

If it takes an hour to dig a hole, how long does it take to dig half a hole... even though the half hole's a whole half-hole, is it also a whole whole?

so, I shall digress...
If you stick a stock of liquor in your locker
It is slick to stick a lock upon your stock.
Or some joker (who is quicker)
Is gonna trick you of your liquor
If you fail to lock your liquor with a lock

Oops, that wasn't music...
"A tutor who tooted the flute
Tried to tutor two tooters to toot.
Said the two to their tutor,
"Is it tougher to toot, or
To tutor two tooters to toot?"

there, better.

Because it is easier & cheaper to manufacture one type of keypad (with Braille) than to manufacture two types (with & without).
It also simplifies stockkeeping.

One of the audience really did ask them "Are you identical twins?"
They were very polite in their answer...

Good for you, BC. Sex education has to be more about emotions and feelings and less about this goes here and that's what happens. Kinda like the difference between knowing how gears work and how to drive the car properly. I was reading on the 'cat a while back that some kids were involved with what has come to be called 'oral sex', and they didn't see it as being sex at all. Blew me away--pardon the expression. When I was a kid it was referred to as CSing and CLing. Times has changed. What I find that kids need to be told is that the act of sex is very emotional, and one of my arguments with kids is that people are generally not prepared for the emotions involved until they are much more mature than many are when they first get involved with someone. (That sentence didn't make a helluva lotta sense.) Basically, I'm up front with the kids and I say that 14 is too young. I don't suggest that there is a magic age, but I think many people will understand what I'm saying.

I am a traind instructor for both teen and adult sex-education within the Unitarian Universalist Church. In our Sunday school classes, we offer versions of sexual education as early as the classes for 6 & 7 years olds. It is a program called Our Whole Lives and is quite remarkable.

Speaking of sex education, it wasn't until my son was born and my wife was breast-feeding him, that I learned some things about breasts and nipples. For one thing, I had always believed the breast milk came out of one tiny hole in the center of the nipple, just like on a plastic baby-bottle nipple. But no, it comes out of several tiny holes (I still don't know how many—6? 8?) around the perimeter of the nipple. The center is just a knob for the baby to hang onto, I guess. (Plus...well, we won't go into that.) Also, nipples turn brown during pregnancy, and then gradually fade to pink again afterwards. Who knew?

It was a surprise to me too.

Conception: sperm fertilizes the egg.

Pregnancy: The zygote (fertilized egg) attaches itself to the wall of the womb. That's pregnancy.
