It's on the news this morning, his family is gathering at his bedside. He hasn't known Nancy for ages, etc.

Google News

If he just passes away and people review his life as an actor and politician but don't get nuts about his political agenda, that's fine. My concern is that this will reenergize the Bush II clan as they try to force this nasty and destructive conservative pill down the throat of Americans and the world.

Yes it could happen. That is all the more reason to keep the politics out of it and simply show the compassion that one would offer to any grieving family.

Now if the rest of the republicans would only die. Heck, they're all mindless idiots like Reagan.

Thanks, Blackcatter. Always glad to read your thoughts.

Reagan was an effective president and I think History will be good to him.

Not a blameworthy thing, but his presidency coincided with his becoming clearly, visibly, demonstrably incapable, Doug. Even on the top of his form, he was never a better politician than you'd expect from a B-movies actor. So I'm not sure how you work out that he was an effective prez. Or maybe you were thinking of Nancy's hairdresser?

Too bad it didn't happen sooner...like with John Hinckley Junior's bullet...

Effective? how? spending more money than all previous presidents combined? Iran-Contra? Arms for Hostages? Holding up the release of the hostages until he was inaugurated? Surely you jest!
If I were to name the worst presidents the list would look like this:
1. George Bush 2nd.
2. Ronald Reagan
3. Warren G. Harding
4. Herbert Hoover
5. Useless S. Grant

Hmmm all republicans; how did that happen?

And the best?
1. Abraham Lincoln
2. Teddy Roosevelt
3.Harry Truman
4.F.D.R.

Anyway, let Mr Reagan go in peace; he wasn't a real bad person after all.He had a good run.Rest in peace, Bonzo.

Don't forget his flat out refusal and fighting against any efforts to raise funds for aids research and preventive measures, (like testing in blood banks and hospitals, or education).

Alzheimer's is a miserable way to end one's life and I feel sympathy for Reagan and those close to him.

He was a good actor and I enjoyed many of his movies. But as a political figure I never liked him, and with good reason.

Here and here.

His political philosophy is a mixture of Social Darwinism and Calvinism. It remains to be seen how history will view him, but I think that in the long run, he and his disciple, George W. Bush, will be regarded as a long step backward on the slow and meandering march to a fully civilized world that embraces true representative democracy as opposed to unlimited privilege for an elite few.

My Nana always said "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." This seems an appropriate occasion to heed her words.

Sinsull, that may be right for people who have had little impact on a person or millions of persons lives, but I refuse to ever forget just how bad a president (and govenrnor - I lived in California under his reign) he was. May he rest in peace, but he certainly doesn't deserve any positive remarks, as far as I'm concerned. He stole his initial election in a way far more devious that the current pretender. That alone should make all American want to never memorialize him in any positive way.

But hey - he's not as much of a Nazi as Bush is!

I will say a short prayer for his soul. (Just did.)

Now, how can history immortalize a man who said, "If you've seen one tree you've seen 'em all." (That brilliant remark was made by him when he was going to allow the logging of the redwoods in California.) Uh, pass that joint, will ya?

Good Donuel. But since Bush is agin' stem cell research it may not happen. What an irony. However, if stem cells would bring Bush back I would be agin' that, for the greater good of mankind.

Besides Reagan and Bush are going to be fine walking those "shining streets they call a better place"

Sinsull, you presumably had the wit to argue when you were fed such trite platitudes.

I do however draw the line at Amergin's intemperate stance. David Nyham had it about right when he wrote in the Boston Globe: "He demonstrated for all to see how far you can go in this life with a smile, a shoeshine and the nerve to put your own spin on the facts."

Likewise a former defense secretary, Clark Clifford, who summed up Reagan as "an amiable dunce."

Incidentally when Larry Speakes was asked what it was like preparing Reagan for press briefings, he said it was like re-inventing the wheel.

Certainly a charmer, but that cannot surely be allowed to obscure the malevolence of betraying his former liberal colleagues in the anti-commie witchunts that shamed America; nor his arming of Bin Laden and other muslims fighting against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.

What bewilders me more than anything is that an alarmingly high proportion of Americans sincerely rated him as a fine president.

Brucie - if you are unfortunate enough to pass prior to myself, I promise I won't say anything bad about you, but public figures who will be a part of history should not have that same luxury. Their flaws are too easily forgotten in history and need to bbe pointed out as often as possible.

Apologies if this conspiracy theory has been aired elsewhere, but it came to me in my waking moments thsi morning.

Was Ronald Reagan 'switched off' to exactly coincide with Bush's otherwise rather difficult appearance at the 60th D-Day Anniversary?

Instead of coming under friendly fire for all the current crap, unplug the guy who won the peace that followed the war that followed the turning point of D-Day, and justify the latest pogrom afresh. Luvverly jubbly!
