Shuck the clothes and crawl in bed at 9:30.

Read until about 10:30, or maybe longer if:
1) Next day isn't a gittin-up-early day; or
2) I'm entranced and "can't lay it down"; or
3) There's a natural break (like a chapter ending) in just a few pages.

About 10:30 or thereabouts, outen the light, and snooze.

Brucie - it's not the thinking about it that helps you sleep, in fact quite the opposite.

First I take a brisk cold shower while singing the theme music from "Hawaii Five-O".

Then I sashay into the kitchen and whip out the juicer, and juice some carrots and ginger. When it's done I down 2 glasses of carrot/ginger juice STRAIGHT!

Then I open the front door and yell "GOOD NIGHT, ORI-I-I-I-I-I-L-YA!!!" as loud as I can.

Then I skip merrily to the bedroom, where I have a full length mirror, strip naked and strike a few muscleman poses, and say: "How'm I lookin' tonight? Oooo! I'm lookin' GOOOD!!!"

Then I do a backflip onto the mattress, fluff up the pillows, lie back with a grateful sigh, and say "Good night, John Boy." and turn out the lights.

I basically follow pretty much the same routine in the morning, except in the opposite order and fashion, starting at 5 AM. My neighbours hate me.

it's the usual, except the part where i tell the dog to get off the bed and wait while i climb under the covers, then shout "okay!" which is his signal to leap back up and have shnuggles. it's not as fun as sex, but it gets the oxytocin flowing. :)

Yeah, battling an excited dog through bed coverings can be a lot of fun, as long as the dog is not too large...and you've got to remember to protect your eyes from the sudden paw lunge.

Paint the bedroom, then collapse in the bed; do six loads of wash, then colllapse in the bed; clean the entire house, then collapse in the bed; do all the taxes for the accountant; then collapse in the bed; practice the autoharp with new songs for FOTMC, then collapse in the bed; work out on the treadmill for an hour, then collapse in the bed; water the entire yard, then collapse in the bed; check the mudcat at 10:34 because I am not having sex, then collapse in the bed....then next week....

Drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, vomit, collapse.

Wake up bushy-eyed and bright-tailed to greet another feckin' morning.

The best part: I usually loose two, maybe three days of my fetid life each time I do that.

I race my husband for the shower, screaming, "Me first! You went first last night!" then dive into bed, rolling up in the covers before he gets them all on his side, and yell "Turn it down!" to my son in the next room, who is blasting Loreena McKennit on his tape player (it's a BIG improvement over Yanni!).

flattop - just in case you were being serious - check out any website in honor of the Waltons - a 70's TV show in the U.S.

Melani - saying husband and mentioning the struggle for showering seperately is redundant . . . And I'd watch you son - McKennit has been make-out music for me and most of my girlfriends.

Mr. Fitz insists that I lie on my right side, and snuggle him before I go to sleep. Sometimes he grooms me a little. But he always curls up on the sheepskin at the foot, before I doze off. Otherwise, I might fall asleep holding him. This is not a dignified position for a cat, which is, of course, what Mr. Fitz is. I've had cats in my bed since I was 7. I have trouble sleeping without one.

To get back to the first question, it always involves music (usually classical) and reading on rare occasions any more. I always used to read in bed, but like many other women in the list, now a-days after the second shift (first one pays the bills, second one takes care of the house and kids) I'm pretty well done-in.

After we're both in bed, I have to get up at least a half dozen times to do things I forgot. This is interspersed with ceremonial lightings of the blowtorch (for clearing out any lingering and really obnoxios farts). Plus one or more trips to the bathroom for one or the other or both of us. Plus a lot of tossing and turning by me until I get comfortable. After about a half hour to forty-five minutes of this, one or both of us is usually asleep. If we're lucky.

If you want your kids to go to bed easily, apparently, the best thing is to have a set routine for bedtime - and *always play the same music*. Or so I'm told by behavioural types, one of whom said that her daughter, aged 15, still starts to yawn and rub her eyes when a particular CD is played - the CD that was always her bedtime music when she was little!

I certainly find that a bedtime with classical music, reading, a bath and a scenter drifting the scent of lavender around the place leads to a more restful sleep than going to bed, turning the TV on with my toe and watching people blasting at each other and screaming and cursing, as is the wont of late-night cop shows.

In a world where I am sometimes told that I'm wierd it is so nice to find that there are people with a lot more claim to that title than me. However, I'm starting to feel a tad too normal - I'll look again at the thread to find ways to change my bedtime habits!

JTT, I can testify to the truth in that statement. When I was small ( okay, I'm still small, when I was younger) I was always sent to bed when the Archers started ( radio show).I am now almost incapable of hearing the Archers theme tune without yawning and feeling sleepy which is pretty sad, considering it's on at 7pm.

I typically start getting ready for bed around 10-10:15pm

Wash face, brush teeth, change into pajamas.

Then 30-45 minutes of reading, punctuated occasionally by laughing at our zany furball(*) as she receives a transmission from the mother ship and goes galloping around the condo.

Lights out around 11pm.

Shower. It's not the same as just being the kind of person who bathes at the end of the day--it's a wind-down thing. I can't do anything else while I'm in the shower so I don't feel pressured to answer the phone, the doorbell, tidy up, etc. I can't sleep if I'm thinking about things so the shower ends up being sort of a clean break (no pun intended) between a busy day and a quiet night. Besides, I can't sleep if my feet aren't clean.
