Shuck the clothes and crawl in bed at 9:30.

Read until about 10:30, or maybe longer if:
1) Next day isn't a gittin-up-early day; or
2) I'm entranced and "can't lay it down"; or
3) There's a natural break (like a chapter ending) in just a few pages.

About 10:30 or thereabouts, outen the light, and snooze.

Brucie - it's not the thinking about it that helps you sleep, in fact quite the opposite.

First I take a brisk cold shower while singing the theme music from "Hawaii Five-O".

Then I sashay into the kitchen and whip out the juicer, and juice some carrots and ginger. When it's done I down 2 glasses of carrot/ginger juice STRAIGHT!

Then I open the front door and yell "GOOD NIGHT, ORI-I-I-I-I-I-L-YA!!!" as loud as I can.

Then I skip merrily to the bedroom, where I have a full length mirror, strip naked and strike a few muscleman poses, and say: "How'm I lookin' tonight? Oooo! I'm lookin' GOOOD!!!"

Then I do a backflip onto the mattress, fluff up the pillows, lie back with a grateful sigh, and say "Good night, John Boy." and turn out the lights.

I basically follow pretty much the same routine in the morning, except in the opposite order and fashion, starting at 5 AM. My neighbours hate me.

it's the usual, except the part where i tell the dog to get off the bed and wait while i climb under the covers, then shout "okay!" which is his signal to leap back up and have shnuggles. it's not as fun as sex, but it gets the oxytocin flowing. :)

Yeah, battling an excited dog through bed coverings can be a lot of fun, as long as the dog is not too large...and you've got to remember to protect your eyes from the sudden paw lunge.

I race my husband for the shower, screaming, "Me first! You went first last night!" then dive into bed, rolling up in the covers before he gets them all on his side, and yell "Turn it down!" to my son in the next room, who is blasting Loreena McKennit on his tape player (it's a BIG improvement over Yanni!).

Melani - saying husband and mentioning the struggle for showering seperately is redundant . . . And I'd watch you son - McKennit has been make-out music for me and most of my girlfriends.

Mr. Fitz insists that I lie on my right side, and snuggle him before I go to sleep. Sometimes he grooms me a little. But he always curls up on the sheepskin at the foot, before I doze off. Otherwise, I might fall asleep holding him. This is not a dignified position for a cat, which is, of course, what Mr. Fitz is. I've had cats in my bed since I was 7. I have trouble sleeping without one.

To get back to the first question, it always involves music (usually classical) and reading on rare occasions any more. I always used to read in bed, but like many other women in the list, now a-days after the second shift (first one pays the bills, second one takes care of the house and kids) I'm pretty well done-in.

After we're both in bed, I have to get up at least a half dozen times to do things I forgot. This is interspersed with ceremonial lightings of the blowtorch (for clearing out any lingering and really obnoxios farts). Plus one or more trips to the bathroom for one or the other or both of us. Plus a lot of tossing and turning by me until I get comfortable. After about a half hour to forty-five minutes of this, one or both of us is usually asleep. If we're lucky.

If you want your kids to go to bed easily, apparently, the best thing is to have a set routine for bedtime - and *always play the same music*. Or so I'm told by behavioural types, one of whom said that her daughter, aged 15, still starts to yawn and rub her eyes when a particular CD is played - the CD that was always her bedtime music when she was little!

I certainly find that a bedtime with classical music, reading, a bath and a scenter drifting the scent of lavender around the place leads to a more restful sleep than going to bed, turning the TV on with my toe and watching people blasting at each other and screaming and cursing, as is the wont of late-night cop shows.

JTT, I can testify to the truth in that statement. When I was small ( okay, I'm still small, when I was younger) I was always sent to bed when the Archers started ( radio show).I am now almost incapable of hearing the Archers theme tune without yawning and feeling sleepy which is pretty sad, considering it's on at 7pm.

I typically start getting ready for bed around 10-10:15pm

Wash face, brush teeth, change into pajamas.

Then 30-45 minutes of reading, punctuated occasionally by laughing at our zany furball(*) as she receives a transmission from the mother ship and goes galloping around the condo.

Lights out around 11pm.

Shower. It's not the same as just being the kind of person who bathes at the end of the day--it's a wind-down thing. I can't do anything else while I'm in the shower so I don't feel pressured to answer the phone, the doorbell, tidy up, etc. I can't sleep if I'm thinking about things so the shower ends up being sort of a clean break (no pun intended) between a busy day and a quiet night. Besides, I can't sleep if my feet aren't clean.

jacqui c - I'm starting to feel a tad too normal - I'll look again at the thread to find ways to change my bedtime habits!

Things might change when you receive your trans-tlantic house guest soon - judging from some of the postings he's made on this thread !

Personally, I roll onto my left side, cup Linda's left breast in my left hand and whisper tenderly into her ear "Do you fancy a quick, deeply meaningful sh*g ?"

Dave, when I see you and Linda next and collapse with uncontrolable laughter it's only because I'm thinking of your last post, OK?

I've already put the lock on the bedroom door but am assured that Kendall is housetrained. Thought about the chair and whip, but he'd probably get the wrong idea.

My Bedtime Ritual:

turn on electric blanket. this is a special electric blanket, designed to give small shocks every 15 mins to stimulate metabolism. Can be turned up or down to taste.

Take off leather boots, belt, uniform. Remove spectacles. Have a cold shower. Polish & scrub, dry & deodorise, receive Swedish massage from Vladimir.

Don army disposal nightie, grey flannel. Pluck chin hairs. Scrub teeth, tongue and fingernails. Put teeth in glass beside bed. Put whip under bed, with rottweiler. Sniff room for any strange odours.

Read "Lobotomies, and how to knit them", and make list of "to do" for next day.

Turn of light. Turn up blanket. Enjoy a shocking night's sleep.

Nurse R.

Wash face, brush teeth, floss, pee, get into bed (trying to remember to keep the last two in the proper order).

Feeling that it is a good thing to keep ourselves spiritually centered, we watch the local PBS affiliate (since we have cable, there are two to chose from) that runs two episodes of The Red Green Show back to back between ten and eleven. We much prefer the theology of the gentleman with the plaid shirt and suspenders to that offered on The 700 Club. Sometimes I watch and Barbara reads. Sometimes we both read. Then we change channels to Classic Arts Showcase (sorta like MTV, but with classical music, e.g. Vivaldi's The Seasons accompanied by nature films), set the timer to go off in half an hour to an hour, and compose ourselves for sleep. We might commemorate saints's days (such as Saint Kermit of All Frogs) like Diana Trent and Tom Ballard.

Drool on pillow.

You people have mostly substituted routines for true rituals...probably all wind up sleeping in bed rather than floating above it...but I suppose it's easier to keep the blankets on that way.

Soak in minerral salt bath.

dry, prune, pluck and powder.

Dim lights. Close curtains.

go to the back verandah and sit quietly with cup of peppermint tea.

Return to sleeping room.

remove fluffy slippers.

sit on bed and meditate for 40 mins.

give thanks to the Universe.

hop into bed.

Imagine beautiful moments while drifting into sleep.

Rock and roll is what happens when you play folk music quickly, after taking a lot of psychoactive substances.:0)

You mean if I play Finnish waltzes on my accordion very, very fast, and I drink a lot of caffiene, I will "rock and roll"? Sounds painful. (But I take your warning. If I ever do that, I'll be sure to wear my chest guard.)

Not a ritual(I keep those for nights of the full and new moons!) but I find this works when I have trouble sleeping:

A couple of drops of lavendar essential oil on the pillow, and go through the words of Spencer the Rover in your head. I've never been able to get to the end of the song before I too am ZZZZZZZzzzzzzZZZZZZZzzzzz...ing.

I need to read for at least a half an hour to get into the day and to get out of the day. I can't just jump out of bed and get ready for work. I HAVE to read for at least a half an hour first -- and pet cats, of course. Sometimes I'll listen to music as well -- especially if I need to write down what's on a tape from a session or something.

And I try to have at least a half an hour reading time before I turn out the light at night. Usually without music, but that may just be habit because until recently I had no way to play music without dealing with earphones and stuff. Maybe I'll get back in the habit of listening to something (probably classical and relaxing) -- but then again, I'd have to get up and shut it off. No, maybe just the sounds of silence and turning pages. (And cats' purrs.)

Linn
