This ol' hillbilly just went down the check list of stuff to take and will be headin' out in the morning. I reckon 3 hours an' I'll be in Harvey da Grace, what ver that is... Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 15 Oct 04 - 11:03 AM I just printed it and will give it to him. Mick said he was going to get a bit of sleep and leave in the wee hours of the morning. I'm not sure how long it takes him, but I'm thinking his getting there before me last year was an anomoly. I'll be on the road in 5-10 minutes. I figure I'll get there around 7, which means I'll probably really get there around 9. Lets hope I remembered to bring everything important. Later, y'all! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: wysiwyg Date: 15 Oct 04 - 10:36 AM Would someone please pass a message on to Big Mick for me--- MMario and I have been looing for a chance to meet in person, and chat about next plans for a certain Fund I'm pretty sure Mick is aware of..... there are others who are in need now and wil be in future..... so I guess we'll be discussing it at my house post-Getatway, Monday..... would love to have him join us to offer wisdom...... I think Mick will understand what I am talking about. Anyone present can share in the discussion, I think Dick & Susan will be here as well.... lot of space left in the Mudcat Dorm here for Monday & Tuesday night..... even for musicians who travel in GAS-fed cars! So can someone print this and pass it to him, since I imagine he's on the road now, or at least give it to MMario? ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Charlie Baum Date: 14 Oct 04 - 10:00 PM Dani-- Western Bypass (as recommended by Bobert): I-95 N to Fredericksburg US 17 North to Warrenton and beyond US 15 North to Leesburg (use bypass around Leesburg; expect traffic here) US 15 North to Frederick I-70 East to Baltimore I 695 North and then East past Towson to I-95 I-95 North to Havre de Grace Eastern Bypass: I-95 North to Bowling Green, VA VA 207 North/East to Bowling Green US 301 North through Waldorf/La Plata to US 50 If you don't make any turns at US 50, US 301 North runs into MD 3 North MD 3 North to I-97 North I-97 North toward Baltimore I-895 North through the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel to I-95 I-95 North to Havre de Grace Or coming up through the center: I-95 to the I-495 Beltway At I-495, you can go EITHER WAY around DC--it's equidistant Listen to WTOP (1500 AM) which has traffic every 10 minutes. If they mention problems on the outer loop at the Wilson Bridge or Prince George's County---that's I-495 East/I-95 North they're talking about If they mention problems on the inner loop at the American Legion Bridge (or Tyson's Corner, I-270, Bethesda), that's I-495 West they're talking about. You pays your money; you takes your chances. Good luck. See you tomorrow, g-d willing and the traffic volume don't rise. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Ferrara Date: 14 Oct 04 - 08:29 PM Dani, I'm coming up from St. Mary's City, on the western shore of the Bay. I'll start at Rte 2/Solomons Island Rd. north, onto Airs T. Allen Blvd/MD 665 N toward us 50/301. 665N becomes I-97N. merge onti I-895 Spur N via exit on LEFT toward I-895/Harbor Tunnel. I-895 Spur N becomes Harbor Tunnel Trwy/I-895N becomes I-95N. From there you know the route. Don't know if you can hook into these roads, for example at I-97, and miss 495 or whether it would be more trouble and distance than it's worth. Anyway that's all the info I have. Rita |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bobert Date: 14 Oct 04 - 08:13 PM As for the 495 question? Yeah, there are alternatives other than 301, which will take you right into Waldorf, Md and a bigger mess than what you are trying to avoid... For those of you who must take 95 North (if 81 is not an option) then take 17 West in Fredrickesburg. (This road actually run northwest). About 30 miles up 17 you'll pass Warrenton and then a few more miles (about 8) take a left on Rt. 15 North. Take 15 to Fredrich, Md., then 70 east to 695 (Baltimore's beltway) take inner loop to 95 North. This will save you at least an hour and maybe 2, depending on time of day... Bobert |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 14 Oct 04 - 06:28 PM I'm going to attempt the Tappan Zee bridge route in order to miss the big traffic jam I usually wind up in that makes me 1.5 - 2 hours later than I think I'm going to be. I'm all packed and just have to shove clothes, instruments and me in the car tomorrow. I'm bringing a spare blanket. There's no way I'm going to fit Carly's "thing" in the car unless it turns into a tardis by tomorrow. I'm bringing imported Turkish pistachios, and hopefully won't eat them all on the road. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 14 Oct 04 - 04:33 PM 95 is 495 going around DC...it is the 495 area that will be the main mess, as there is construction where they join...and heavy traffic all the way around the Beltway and past Baltimore. Rits will be picking up someone south of DC, and she says Mapquest gave her a good sounding route using 301 and other roads past Baltimore to Darlington.. She is gone for a couple hours, but we'll see if you are still considering it then....and maybe Charlie will pop in. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Dani Date: 14 Oct 04 - 04:25 PM Actually, I'm just wondering if it makes sense to stay on 95 instead of 495. That's where I remember a mess. Or am I mis-remembering the whole thing? Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 14 Oct 04 - 03:43 PM it 'looks' like catching 301 between Richmond & Fredricksburg could help, but it ain't clear what is best to do as you approach Baltimore....I have only driven out there once or twice. Charley would know if there IS any sane route thru it all... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Bill D Date: 14 Oct 04 - 03:15 PM 'magical time'on FRIDAY?...before 2PM..*grin* or after 8... there is no real easy way, coming from the south, to avoid 95-495 till you get North of town, then you can use a couple tricks the last 60-70 miles. Let me look at a map....and hope Charlie Baum sees this...he is our walking AAA. more soon... when are you starting and approximate schedule? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Dani Date: 14 Oct 04 - 02:35 PM Any locals reading this? I'm not sure, but it seems to me that in the past, 495 has been a poor route to take at rush hour. Can someone who lives there please advise the best way to come if it's late afternoon? Or the magical time to pass through the chute? And are there people coming to BWI who don't have rides, or travelers still in need of bedding or kazoos? Dani |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: wysiwyg Date: 08 Oct 04 - 10:48 AM Thanks, all, for the encouragement to come. There are so few things Hardi and I do JUST as a couple, that we can find time to share. The Getaway will be one of them, when he retires most likely. We MIGHT take some vacay time next year in October-- but ssshhhh! Don't tell him why! :~) ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Ferrara Date: 05 Oct 04 - 09:30 PM Mrs. Duck, We usually hold it the third weekend in October. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 05 Oct 04 - 01:33 PM Does the Getawatake place on the same weekend each year or does it vary? We are contemplating getting there in 2006 but may need to beg time off from school unless it coincides with half term which it did last year but not this but that was the school holiday varying rather than the Getaway. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Pauline L Date: 05 Oct 04 - 12:10 AM Is anyone driving to the Getaway from the environs of Detroit? I need some help, and that's what friends are for (that and other things). I have been through some very hard times in the last couple of years: no job, no money, no car, no love. Now I have a job. Some friends of mine in the Michigan/Madison, Wisc./Detroit area have a beat up old car which I can have (!!) if someone will only drive it here for me. Please, please, somebody help me! I'll pay you for expenses and some extra for appreciation. If you like, you can come to the DC area pre-Getaway, stay in my home, and go to Fortunato's party on Thursday night with me. I will be forever grateful... Pauline |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: Jeri Date: 04 Oct 04 - 05:01 PM MMario, maybe halfway between the Getaway and Toronto, but I think maybe a big detour on the way back to Michigan. (Unless there's something I'm not aware of, besides 99% of everything else.) One of these years, Susan, you're gonna have to take a Sunday off! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 From: GUEST,Nancy King at work Date: 04 Oct 04 - 04:20 PM Susan, when can we expect YOU to come to the Getaway??!! I mean, it's one thing to operate a B-and-B-for-Folkies, but even better to participate in the festivities! Hopefully persuasively, Nancy |
