I was in Competent for a whole week once. Then I was in Continent for a month. Next year I figure to vacation in Sane. Sane, Alberta. Nice little place. You can drive around the whole town in a complete state of toxication and nobody says anything paraging about it. The currenthilaration I felt upon doing this for the first time was describable. I took my insignificant other on the ride, and she was so gruntled about it that she has been giving me the noisy treatment ever since.

Looking at the first message in this thread...

you know the word empty...

I saw many years ago in a BBC TV program on the history of the English Language about a North Country word

one can "emp" a cart - that is to empty it - the cart is then "empty"

one can also "unemp" it - that is to fill it ...

:-)

Kim C
The plural of "mice " is "meese"....
Ref: see the cartoons "I hate you meeces to peeces"

One of the latest songs in our choir's repertoire is called "Axises of Evil" - words by our own Paul Spencer and to the tune of "Brisbane Ladies". We sang it at the Dog last week for the second time ever. The first time it was in our pertoire. Hurry home Paul!

"We'll march off to war, like good little soldiers.
We'll march off to war for President Bush,
Until we destroy all the Axises of Evil,
For there's freedom to fight for and a lifestyle to push."

Yesterday started out nicely, with clement weather. Then it started to rain, but at least everyone was driving wreckfully. I noticed a crowd had started to burse, then one of them tried to incite a riot, but we managed to excite it without too much trouble. Then I got a report of a woman who said that the exhabitants of her house broke in and stole some jewelry, however, it was impensive and priceful. We caught the culprits before they crossed the state line, so they were intradited easily enough. At court, a man who was fighting a summons that I wrote couldn't come up with a good excuse, (he had an incuse), so the judge onerated him. Later, someone fell in the river, when we found him, he had stopped spirating and suscitating, but we were able to rescue him (it was his second time, we scued him last week). I was glad to hear later that he spired from his injuries. Actually, it was pretty slow last night, which is why I had time to think up this stuff.

Steve, personating a police officer.

Rapaire: the Eton Wall Game would be ... paramural? metamural? incomprehensimural? (played with a wall, but nobody understands the rules)

Hold it -- I'm mixing my Latin and Greek roots here -- I'll be drummed out of the Linguistic Brownies ... admural? A game plyed nowhere near a wall would be proculmural (I've got all their records), while a game where the wall was very important would be ultramural. I think intermural would be a game where walls played against each other.

Pace Joseph Heller, but someone who wasn't a baptist would be an abaptist; would an ananabaptist be someone who wasn't a baptist, or someone who'd been re-baptised again? (Or a Frenchman who baptised bananas?)

Well, to cary this a bit further, Orthodoxy can have a counterpart of Paradoxy, and one could jump up into a plane wearing a metachute or an orthochute.

And I once dated a young lady who refused to be dismayed (spelling doesn't work but phonetics do.)

Intramural sports are played "within the walls" (of a school, for instance).

Extramural sports are played "outside the walls" -- perhaps with another school.

Intermural sports would be played inside the walls, making it cramped for most atheletes.

Submural sports would be played under the walls, perhaps by moles.

Super- or supra- mural sport would be played above or over the walls (quidditch?).

Mural sports would be played on the walls.

It follows, then, that plain ol' sports aren't played at all.

RangerSteve, a dead insect is an extinsect (or an ex-insect).Do not confuse with a former religious group, an exsect. A former state of nervous depression is defunked. (If I hadn't had to cheat a little with that one, I'd have sembled; but I won't get tressed about it.) If the cobbler sticks to his last, what did he stick to first? Is red cabbage greengrocery? [Billy Bennett; also wrote "The ball ranswiftky to and fro/And sometimes fro and to."]

Is there end to this sense?

Don, it's not travagant, it's vagant, as in "I don't put anything extra into my vagance". Similarly, if I perform on stage without flashing lights, a loud band, or dancing girls, I'm putting on a vaganza.

Awesome - inspiring awe
Loathsome - inspiring loathing
Gruesome - inspiring grue

Was King Arthur's sword a originally a calibur?

If a living thing isn't an insect, is it an exsect or just a sect?

Some of you may say that my contribution to this thread is whelming.
others may be underwhelmed.

Somewhere between ex and in there must be a region called ternal. I went looking for the place with just a touch of fear and worry making me a hoplessly trepid traveller. I would have said Explorer but since I'm still ploring that name wouldn't be correct. I just fumble my way through so I'm a fairly trepid and travagant plorer.
