Who's going? When are you getting there?

We hope to get there late Friday night (of the weekend before, now only 8 days away) and stay till everybody goes home on Sunday week.

REALLY looking forward to this!

I've been there a couple of times recently, but I'm going to have to put up with Sidmouth (UK) this year. Last time I recorded a minidisc while walking round from session to session at 1 in the morning. It's superb - I listen to it all the time - the atmosphere takes me right back. Sigh. You'll love it.
Ray

Never mind Ray, we'll try and make up for it in the Bedford.

It's what everyone calls the Appalachian String Band Music Festival held every summer in Camp Washington Carver, near Raynelle, West Virginia, just off the New River. A superb week, where many of the best of the world's Old Time musicians (there's no bluegrass) get to meet, play together and maybe compete.
Cheers
Ray

Please forgive my ignorance - I don't want to start a huge discussion thread -but as a simple Englishman who knows nothing about American music, what are the essentials of Old Time as opposed to bluegrass?
Should I now duck as epithets about iggerant b----s across the Atlantic fly through the ether?

Peterr--

I have taken the liberty of starting a separate thread on that question, it's a good one and I think has been hashed around a lot in the Forum already. (try Super Search?)

Ray-- thanks for a fast description of Clifftop! Of the whole year, it's the time I look forward to the most, just like I used to look forward to Christmas morning as a small child.

We're planning on getting there Sunday afternoon. Set up our ancient Shasta on the water tower hill in the shade.
The absolute best fun of the year. Ya'll come!

Chip

Have fun all, once again our children's only time for vacation with us fell across the clifftop dates, next year we hope.
We will see any of you guys at the Rockbridge Festival in September?
cheers, Chance

I keep imagining I'll go to Clifftop for a treat but my folks just booked me with them on a cruise over to Mexico and down to the Keys for October so I guess that will be my vacation this year! Have fun...harpy

I missed Bill and Hazel Westfall at Mt Airy this year. We sang many songs last year.

Does anyone have news of them? If you see them 'on the porch'(I understand they play there, I haven't been) please tell them Chance and Susette Shiver said hello.

Maybe we'll see you next year, Pete.

I've seen and sung with Bill & Hazel at Vandalia (May) and the West Virginia State Folk Festival in Glenville (June). They appear to be doing well. Looking forward to seeing them at Clifftop. Sorry you won't be there.

We'll be getting there Friday July 25 early in the day. We were going to attend Balance and Spin, but it didn't happen this year. It will still be great fun to be in that beautiful part of the world and watch the folks trickle in. See you there.

Al and Barbara Lubanes
