Subject: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you?
From: Marion

Hello all. I'm working on a plan to take a long tour around the US, paying my way by busking and organic farm working. My general plan is to be on the road from September to April, and right now I'm thinking that I would start in the Northeast, work my way south, then go west across the southern states during the winter, then go up the western side. The only definite plans so far are to stay where it's warm enough to camp, and to go to every Springfield so that I'm sure I've done a Simpsons pilgrimage.

So my question is: which Mudcatters can I visit along the way? Please respond in this thread or by PM, and if you live in a town I haven't heard of, tell me what state it's in. I'll be talking to you more when I have more detailed plans.

Thanks, Marion

I live in Boston, about a hundred miles east of Springfield, MA (easily reached on the bus). I have a spare room and a lot of cats. I won't be around in July, but if it fits with your schedule to be here otherwise, you'd be welcome for a few days here...

happy travelling,

peg

I'm in Indianapolis, and I'd be enchanted to have you visit. My Beautiful Wife and I would feed you and provide you a bed for your stay, if you like, as well as some showing of the local sights. I do have to say that the bed available is probably not for a very tall person.

We also have a large back yard, where you could pitch a tent if that's more comfortable than the bed we can offer.

I think if you go by way of Meixner, we are on the way to anywhere else, in north central PA an hour south of Corning NY. In fact you coud just proivide a good excuse for a Mudcattering-- Hardi and I are here, and Mmario, Burke, Hogeye, and Hippie Chick can get here from where they are, as can SharonA, Bert, Max, a bunch of people near Philly, Stroudsburg, NJ.... you could drop south from us and hit 80 to proceed west, or go another way and zoom down to Bobertland or maybe he'd head thisaway....

Nice guest rooms, too.

There's a Springfield in Oregon, to the side of Eugene, coming up I5, intersecting with 99W.

I'm on the west side of the country and we have a VERY long coastline but I don't suppose you're driving to Alaska? In any case, have fun. Sounds great.

We're in Hillsborough, North Carolina (near Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh). Major music area and lots of commercial scale organic truck farms. We have done farmers markets (wildcrafted medicinal herbs and organic cut flowers) for years and could put you in touch with a number of the organic growers in the area to check out opportunities.

I'm in the Deep South, in northwest Florida, aka Lower Alabama. We have 8 acres of woods that we've left pretty much uncleared except for a 1 acre fish pond and about 1 acre of garden plots including 50 4' X 8' raised beds for biodynamic/French intensive organic vegetable gardening. Lots of room for camping. Feel free to PM.

That sounds kewl, Bruce!

I just looked and there IS a Springfield, Colorado!, but it's probably about an 8-10 hour drive from where we are clear across the state! We've got floor space, cats, dog and a big yard. My sister, up the road a couple of hours, if she's home, has a hot tub and lots of space with a cat and dog. There are a few other of us Mudcatters in Colorado, too.

another california stop...in butte county.
no spring field around here as far as i
know , but there is a nuclear power plant
a couple of hours south of here
in the sacramento area where the frog who
won the calaveras jumping from contest was
from...it only had 2 eyes though...
Butte county has 3 main cities-
Chico, Oroville, and Paradise.
in the mediterranean climate olives, oranges
and many other fruits grow well.
Peaches, Apricots, Almonds, walnuts,
and there is an olive oil press that
might need helpers. the season is
nov-dec-jan for the oil pressing i think..
also quite a few apples.
the springfield creamery in oregon
is the home of nancy's yogurt..
a good product. I am not sure where
in oregon Cascadian farms is but they are
a large producer of fruits & veggies
and jams and pickles..
where are you coming from, by the way?

Wow, I didn't expect so many responses so soon. Have to get my map out!

Unfortunately, Ebbie, I would say that Alaska is unlikely, but I have loads of time and can probably make it to most other places suggested. Open Mike, I'm living in Toronto. Peter T., you can come with me if you like. Uncle Dave, excessive height is not currently one of my problems. Bill D., I was indeed thinking that I should try to make the Getaway. Doug Remley, unfortunately your lobsters would be wasted on me (strict vegetarian). Bruce, that does sound kewl. Greg Stephens, I think we're going to need more details about your encounters. All you rest, thanks very much for the offers and I will be in touch.

Marion, You can visit us anytime. Be warned, however, that Iowa has very little organic farming and most farm work is done between April and September, not the other way 'round. Oh, and there is no town named Springfield in Iowa. Still, you wouldn't have to sleep outside and we must be situated roughly between two Springfields so you'll have to get this way sooner or later.

I'll go turn the porch light on.

And in case you weren't aware, a "roganic farm" is where they send farmers with receding hairlines; the hands there rub their scalps with rutabaga root after dinner each evening until they get their hair back.

Hope springs eternal....

Nelson, New Hampshire, is the contradance capital of the universe! There's no one making (or paying) money out of organic farming, but I've got a couch and a shower and a meal or 2 if you care to stop this way! The weekly contra dances are Monday nights- weekly for the past 150 years or so!

Contradancing capital, now that sounds interesting.

Mick, I was thinking that I would include Michigan, especially if I don't make it to the Getaway. And I have to go to Illinois (very good friend there) anyway, so you're practically on the way.

Mark, I like that bit about the porch light - what a simple but elegant way of saying "Come and visit." I'm going to have to borrow that. It's happened more than once before that I've quoted something I read at Mudcat, and when I went back to see who said it, it was you.

Just want to clarify about the organic farming: I intend to get a WWOOF directory of farms that'll house and feed you for short times in exchange for labour. But it's not a paying proposition; I just anticipate that I'll want to take a break from the road for a week or so now and then. And it's a minor thing; this will basically be a busking tour. So nobody should go out of their way to find me a farming job. Thanks for the suggestions anyway!

Marion

Hi Marion, if you're thinking of the Contradace captial (Nelson NH) well we're just a bit from Animaterra (& you'd be more than welcome to stay), over the monntain & down the road a piece. 45 minutes to the east is Portmouth, NH every Fri night at the Press room there's a singing & playing session & the 2nd Sta of the month there's a great sea music session (plenty of mudcatters). Noe 40 or so minutes to the south is Boston, the captail of Irish music sessions among plenty of any kind of folk music you'd be hungry for, nightly. I like to cook so you'd eat pretty well (my daughter's a not so strict vegetarian). If you do consider the New England area give us an idea, we're thinking of doing a music bash in August, maybe. If not have a great visit anyway. Barry

If your coming through Northern Minnesota, come on over. Plenty of room in or out. One thing I have to tell you though, I always tell folks to make themselves at home because I don't wait on anyone and Mudcatters are no exception! When are you coming through? I'm going to a blues fest, more north than me on June 13-15 and playing on June 27 at our local blues Fest. Another big festival I go to is the second week in July, that lasts 5 days so that's a few times I won't be around unless you want to go too! Then there's August, 2 more blues fests in Duluth and Fargo. Whew, sounds like the dancing season is upon me!
Peace, Rustic~putting out the welcome mat!
