Hi,

I got sent this by a friend, thought you'd enjoy it.

YESTERDAY

Yesterday,
All those backups seemed a waste of pay.
Now my database has gone away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly,
There's not half the files there used to be,
And there's a milestone hanging over me.
The system crashed so suddenly.

I pushed something wrong,
What it was I could not say.
Now my data's gone
And I long for yesterday-ay-ay-ay.

Yesterday,
The need for backups seemed so far away.
I thought my data was all here to stay,
Now I believe in yesterday.

G'day Alison,

I downloaded this one 3 July, 1998 - from a thread on Mudcat. Come to think of it, I passed it on to a few friends around Sydney ... you might even have got it from of of those!

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Hi,

Oops, I thought I might have seen it somewhere before. It came to me via Newcastle. Now what was that Tom Lehrer song..... "I got it from..... and she got it from...."

The Tom Lehrer song is called Nicolai Ivanovich Lobochevsky (don't anyone DARE question the spelling)

Uhm, I don' teenk so... that was the one about the thievery of a mathematics proof, and a verry funny song it was, and I'm certainly not going to fix your spelling, but the Tom Lehrer song alison is quoting is a little more basic than math. It's the one about VD, right, alison?
Actually, I have the songbook (Too Many Songs by Tom Lehrer and Not Enough Pictures by Ralph Steadman) and IF you want, can post the words.
Blessings,
Barbara

We had a pub sing in London last month, and one drunken patron kept coming over to give us requests. He wanted "Yesterday," and it didn't look like he'd shut up until he heard it.
Well, Dave Brayant sand one hell of a parody of "Yesterday," and our besotten friend loved it.
So did I.
So, Dave, could you post those lyrics?
Thanks.

I think the second verse should have "millstone" rather than "milestone", but there again it's not my song. Milestone may have been intentional.

On a similar theme there's This one which does have attributions

"Yesterday" by John L. Berger, Mechanicsburg, PA appeared in the May '96 edition of Enterprise Systems Journal (With apologies to John Lennon and Paul McCartney)

Yesterday

Yesterday
All my troubles seemed so far away.
Microsoft brought new ones here to stay.
Oh, how I wish for yesterday.

Suddenly,
Nothing works at all efficiently.
GPFs are running rampantly.
Oh, Microsoft, just please leave me!

Why we had to go
To Windows 95
I couldn't say.
Windows just works wrong.
How I long for yesterday.

Suddenly,
OS/2 was praised triumphantly
But was marketed pathetically.
Now 95 is haunting me.

Why 95 is alive
I just can't say.
Bill just stole the Mac
And went back
To Yesterday.

Ah yesterday --
So where do I want to go today?
To a place where Gates is far away.
Oh, how I wish for yesterday.

The Tom Lehrer song is 'I got it from Agnes' (Lucky Pierre, always in the middle), and is brilliant.

There are other parodies....

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be
There's a surgeon hanging over me
He's come to to do my vasectomy.....

You're a glutton for punishment Joe:

Yesterday - seemed like it was Wed-nes-day,
But as today is Saturday,
It must have been Friday - Yesterday.

Suddenly - there's no entry in my di-ar-y,
For the Thursday or the Fri-i-day,
This Saturday came suddenly.

Where two days could go,
I don't know, I couldn't say,
I remember - bugger-all since yesterday
Which seemed like...

Wednesday - still there's nothing else to say,
At least I don't think so anyway,
Today was tomorrow - yesterday.

Well, thank you, Dave. My day is now complete.
Is this your own work, or who do we blame for writing it?
Thanks.

As I've told Joe, I wrote it in the 60's when a rather similiar person kept pestering me to sing the original (which I've never learnt). I'd just had a few days of very boozy holiday and was at an even boozier party and the parody was the result of being told "If you're a folksinger, you should be able to write your own words".

Leprosy-
All my limbs are falling off of me
I'm not half the man I used to be
I believe I have leprosy

My little brother taught that to me. I don't know where he got it.
