I'm looking for a site that hosts books to read online, in particular Catch-22. Does anybody have a good site for this ?

Here's a site I use a bit, hosts anything from music to particle physics to modern art - Oh and some of the classics....

Anybody got others ?

here is a link to my ex's (out dated) web site where used books are
fro sale for reaonalbe prices...that way you can have an actual book,
and read it the old fashioed way, by turning the pages, and can take
it anywhere, bed, picnic, travelling, and do not need electricity to
read it, unless you require a light to see the pages...Laurel
www.quiknet.com/~piercebk . He has thousands of titles:
used, out-of-print , and rare books for sale, paper-backs and hard-covers.

Thanks Mike

I will admit to having no greater love than a book in the hand. Even when I borrow one from the library - I despair to have to give it back especially if it was a good book, maybe I like just hoarding, maybe it is knowledge the book is still there to be read, re-read, passed on.

But Hhaving a book to hand and being in work on the PC is not exactly compatable, so to steal away a hour a day or as happens tonight - a few hours 'cause things are quiet, a book on the web is ideal, I can also Alt-tab faster than hide a book....

thanks

I will try out your ex's site, as now that you've reminded me there is an out-of-print book I've been on the lookout for...cheers

Diesel

Historic Sketches of the Cattle Trade of the West and Southwest, Joseph G. McCoy, 1874: Cattle Trade
A fine picture of the Southwest, Kansas to New Mexico. What is was like trading on the Santa Fe Trail. Must-read for all lovers of the West.

and to make it easier to read some of those things from Project Gutenberg, etc...there is a to free program called yBook

"read text, RTF or HTML files and display the contents on side-by-side pages just like an open book. If you do a lot of reading from your screen (your own work, online workshop subs, short story subs) yBook will make life easier." Freeware.

other related programs at the site also, including one which will read to you out loud...

Don't expect to find recent literature to read on the Web. This stuff needs to be out of copyright to be up in full text.

There are a few e-book services by subscription. Those I know of are recent books and either reference, academic, or technical. Such as Britannica Online, Netlibrary,or Books 24x&. Writers of popular fiction are just not going to give their works away.

Catch 22 is in print for less than $10 and you can probably find it in many used book stores or libraries.

BTW, The Online Books page does not host the titles. They provide you with links to texts that are out there. It's a great book index.

Try this one: Books
I usually buy the books that I want to read, but I have bookmarked a number that are on line that I check for quotes or references.

Catch 22 was printed over and over in paperback, very common, $2.00 copies in flea market stalls. Some used dealers, when they buy boxes of books, throw out the older paperbacks (a couple of waste bins here I have checked from time to time) because there is little or no profit in them. Old textbooks always go out the back door.

Again appreciated - and again my limits are the fact I'm in work so paper books not a real option. As for buying them - I'm forever at that - but for reading at home.

Looking through some of the lists though - Even if I'm browsing a subject - I don't half go off on tangents into some really interesting books - Still prefer the old touchy feely of a bookshop though.

NetLibrary is a good one, and there is a nifty trick to how you use it. Go to a public library or campus that has a subscription to the service, and set up an account from one of their computers. It's IP specific, but only the first time. Use your email address as your account number, as I recall. Anyway, next time you log on, it can be from anywhere. I work at a library with NetLibrary, and this is one of our "well kept secrets," or everyone might come to set it up then tie up our books that we subscribe to for students and faculty. NetLibrary has quite a few new books, recent releases (they have made the arrangements--someone remarked on this above). There are also a lot of free books anyone can read anytime, anywhere.

Anyway - just to share with you another link with some e-texts.

Should you need it - enjoy !

The University of Virginia's E-Book Library contains versions for both MS Reader and Palm devices as well as Intenet text versions. I haven't cross checked the other references to see if any of the lists also include this one.

here are a couple of other on-line used books for sale sources:
www.ABE.com (advanced book exchange)-a consortium of hundreds of
book dealers who list their entire catalog of titles here. You
can find multiple copies of many books, and take your pick from
a selection of condition, price, edition, etc.
www.alibris.com formerly known as Interloc.

I was also going to recommend Advanced Book Exchange: here is the link. It's a very, very good service, the largest in the world.

Abebooks

(My daughter also works there...*grin*)

A tip of the hat to Winchbooks of Canberra (Australia), who were very helpful to this customer when there was a mix-up in valuation at Customs Canada. books@webone.com.au.

Abebooks and Alibris are, of course, the two most used by me, since their services have been taken up by so many bookstores, including some local ones here and the Australian one mentioned above. Very little that they don't come up with (except Brown, North Carolina Folklore volumes two and three).

I find it virtually impossible to read books online. But it's great for finding a passage you want to quote.

I find that if you put the title of the book + "online" on Google, it'll more often than not come up with the goods. But that doesn't apply so much with relatively modern books, such as Catch-22.

Anyway, here's a link to a chapter-by-chapter summary and analysis of the book.

Abebooks offers a nice service -- you can put in a standing request for a book or books, and they will notify you if what you are looking for comes available.
