Cheers John, It's my favourite too! (Although one shouldn't have a favourite child). I used four of the songs in the musical play "Go and play up your own end" script by Malcolm Stent, music and songs by me. It's about a Brummie childhood and the street of neighbours in 1950's England. It's certainly hit a chord somewhere because it's going on at the Alexandra theatre in Birmingham in March which will mean it will have played all the theatres in Birmingham, Britains second city, in a space of four years.I understand that no other production in theatre history has done this before.
You should get to see it, it's funny and sad and the people tell us it's got that wonderful ingredient that comes from who knows where..."woofle dust".

Dear Havey Andrews:

I ordered "The Gift" from your website and got no response. I'm not blaming you personally but thought you should know about it. Maybe there's some glitch in the ordering system.

'Go and play up your own end!' Blimey, that brings it back -- Main Street, Sparkbrook, usually shouted at us if we'd ventured into Spark Street or Long Street (having ignored our nan's warning 'Don't go in the 'orse road!') I'll try to get up to the Alex to see that.

Richard, sorry to hear that. All orders have gone out. Occasionally one gets lost in the post. I'll send you a personal.

Slight thread creep or coincidence corner: BUT... when my dad was working as an insurance agent for the Co-op he called on Malcolm Stent's family and used to tell me of Malcolm's forays into show biz (Malcolm wrote the book of the play for which Harveyt supplied the music, and I think appears in it).

I showed Dad the entry for the play in "What's on in Birmingham" today. Just got back from visiting him.
Also the hotel we stay in when we go to see my dad, the Lyndhurst
(HERE)
in Kingsbury Rd about 100 yards away from him, is where I understand, the Jug o'Punch Folk Club moved to (it was in Digbeth in the '60s, I seem to remember and the Campbells the stars.

Digbeth it certainly was, Roger: in the Central Hall. I thought I'd seen you before somewhere!

Probably not,Steve, while some friends at the time were great Jug patrons, I was usually at the jazz club "Opposite Lock" in Gas Street Basin, though I certainly saw the Ian Campbell Band somewhere in those days -damn CRS!

While we're on a Brummie nostalgia thread-creep, chaps, did you ever get to Le Metro, a Blues club under the arches of Snow Hill Station, or the wonderful Mothers in Erdington?

Just been reading the "Songs to stop the war" thread and this reminded me of Harvey's "Death come Easy"

The words are in the DT although not attributed to Harvey and can be found here
Death Come Easy

I still sing this song, it is eminently singable and so appropriate at this time. Although the US has not yet reach the point of calling so many young men to war.

No, it's by Harvey's fellow Brummie Ian Campbell, Nutty.

I was looking for something else last night and found Tomorrow is a highway amongst my old songsheets. I think this may be a good time to start learning it.

Actually Steve "Death come easy" is one of my very early efforts. The Campbell group recorded it.

Although I must confess to being in love with someone else, I'm starting to adore Harvey too! His insightful, honest postings remind me that I am not actually the only person in the world who, for instance, really dislikes loud bass-base pop music being played in every shop, bar, car, public space (how long before we get it in our libraries I wonder?!). That I am not the only person in the world who does not like smoky pubs. And that maybe, just maybe, I am not at fault somehow for disliking these things the UK in 2003! Harvey is one of my precious islands of sanity. Thank you Harvey :)

Aw, shucks! But isn't that what Mudcat is all about? Seems I've spent my life always being in the 30% on every issue about everything. Here, I don't feel so isolated. At least there's always Rick Fielding to re-direct me if I get too out of line.
As to music in libraries...well it's in the bookshops now!
