I heard Jody Stecher's "Oh the Wind and Rain" recently. Does anyone know his source for the song?

Thanks

In the booklet to 'Going Up On The Mountain' (Acoustic Disc ACD-39), Stecher says he had heard Ethel Raim and Walt Koken sing more or less the same tune, but he cobbled the lyrics together from various versions of 'The Two Sisters' in ballad books - 'I added words and changed others to suit my tongue'. His 'Eleven Ballads' (Appleseed APR 1030) - see Nutty's link above - has an expanded version accompanied by oud and mandolin. The original recording reissued on ACD-39 featured Hank Bradley's beaut fiddle playing.

The source for the song is the Scottish ballad "Binorie" or the "Bonny Banks of Binorie" which is about the two sisters, "The oldest pushed the younger one in". There are a number of variants of this ballad. Horton Barker, t the time, an octenegarian (I think Sandy recorded him on Folk Legacy) does a masterful version with the chorus "Bow and Balance To Me".
