Back in the early and mid 70's I watched several shows on CBC that were available on our cable network in the US. Somewhere along about 1980 the CBC became no longer available in the US cable system I was hooked to. I recall watching Tommy Makem and Ryan's Fancy, The Irish Rovers and a shpw from the Maritimes called All Around The Circle. Does anyone have any of these programs on tape? Or are they available from the CBC?

The Makem/Ryan's Fancy show was a syndicated effort recorded out of the facilities of CHCH Hamilton, Ontario in the early seventies.
The video was shot live from a local Irish/Canadian club.
The producer of the show was Manny Pittson of the, Don Messer and Singalong Jubilee fame.
The musical director and offstage bassist was Blind Freddy McKenna The reason I know this, is because I was his, sometimes assistant director and copyist(music charts).

The Irish Rover's show was CBC out of Vancouver and All Around the Circle, was done in St. John's NFLD, also CBC.

Great shows every one of them.
Recently Manny Pittson and I tried to float the idea of doing another show of this style, but to no avail.
Its seems that in the 500 plus channel world we live in, theres no market for the little folk variety music shows, such as these.

I would just bet theres a few Mudcatters who would think differently.

Great info Glen and yes, not a few of us would love a folk music variety show again. Do you know of any video tape available for these shows?

Hi Don, Most of the old CBC show were shot on video and usually it got use again and again.
So in true CBC fashion most of those early shows were destroyed. Not sure about CHCH, but I would expect the same.
However Manny and Bill Langstroth(married Anne Murray) created a show 10 years ago and the basis of the show was old clips of these early folk/music shows.
I'll PM you Mannys address and perhaps he might point you in the right direction.

Ryan's Fancy and the Clancy's were my introduction to traditional music. If you do hear of any videotapes I'd like to know.
