Is Barnaby any relation to THE Rod Stradling? There is another Rod Stradling who has a ceilidh band in the Cheshire region and I did make the mistake of asking Rod about his gig in Stafford - an easy mistake in the circumstances.
Anyway the show WOW! - her rendition of Willow Tree takes some beating.

Buggur, missed it. All is not lost however.

It's available on the Radio 3 Website (for the next 7 days anyway).

Direct links don't seem to work, but find 'World Music' on the right of the page, and click 'Andy Kershaw'

I agree with Mr Red about Willow Tree. The way it started in pure traveller style, take away the accompaniment and it could have been May Bradley, and then slipping in the Hot Club de Paris overtones. I nearly threw something at the radio when Kershaw asked if it was American.

I had been trying to persuade my daughter to learn Willow Tree because it is such a good song and nobody sings (sang) it except Danni Stradling. I'm really surprised that nobody else had picked it up off VOTP before.

Sorry, Peter from Essex, but...'Willow Tree' had definite and I mean DEFNITE American influences re. the live session....smacked of Bob Willis and the Texas Playboys ( I think that was the name of the band...some American cousin help me out..). Plus - - the tune is remarkably similar to a Willie Nelson song called 'San Antone' if my memory serves me right...no more of a trad. anglophile than me but..hey-ho.

Thought it was a damned nifty arrangement anyway.....

Very clever arrangement not country, not blues, not trad, er I think Liza has something all her own there. It sounds right.
Now I don't want to be too contentious here but is that a good example of nature versus nurture? and which....
discuss....
