Hey there, San Diegans,
Any chance of gathering in Balboa Park this coming Saturday (November 9) or Sunday, Nov. 10?

I'm gonna be in your fair city from the 7th thru the 13th, and I could jam either day, although Saturday is better for me. (I'd have to leave by 2:30 PM on Sunday.)

In addition, Saturday the 9th, being the second Saturday, is the San Diego Folksong Society Song Circle at St. Andrew's (?) Lutheran Church in La Mesa, and I plan to be there.

Whaddya think, Hugh, Amos, Joan O'Bodhran, Susan, et al.?

Genie

Well, I'll miss pickin' with ya that weekend, Amos, but have a wild time in those Palomar wilds.

Any of you other pickers and grinners up for some jamming that weekend -- and/or for doing the jam/song circle thing Saturday evening in La Mesa?

San Diego doesn't have a metronome. We got a few trolleys, though....

LOL!

There were these three guys who needed to get across town, and they decided to see who could get there first, see. One of them took the bus. The second one took the trolley from down the street. And the third one ran down below street level and took the Metronome....

It's a species of small, gnarled music-loving troglodytes typically found in the subways of Paris. All scientific records on Metro Gnomes (the correct, but little-used spelling) indicate that they were originally descended from Prussian mine-sprites smuggled into Paris during the First World War in an effort to re-route the sewers. They seem to have a genetic pre-disposition for playing accordions.

I want to tell you that it kind of makes me homesick to read these threads. I used to go to the Balboa Park jams a lot when I lived there and I was also president of the San Diego Folk Song Society for a few years. Only reason I was elected to that position was I happened to be in the bathroom during voting.

When you go to the song circle Genie, see if Anita Paradowski is still around. She and I used to do flute and guitar duets.

Well, the rain (the real stuff, not just a couple of sprinkles) was supposed to hit Portland today, a few hours after I flew the coop for San Diego (which was its usual sunny self when I arrived around noon.) But the weatherguys said the storm was heading north and east, not south, so I thought maybe it'd leave San Diego alone this time.

Genie

BTW, did you ever notice that from a plane, most of San Diego looks a lot like a printed circuit board?

Well, Hugh, I heard on the news today that it's supposed to be dry all week. I hope so, for the sake of you pickers and grinners.

Last night at the Song Circle, I told folks there was a jam in Balboa Park from time to time and asked who would like to be notified. Everyone seemed to think the idea of an outdoor jam in November through February was unrealistic. But I do have one contact there who is interested and if the weather does turn out to be the busker's friend, you may pick up a couple of other jammers, too.

(Amos got rained out of leaving town Friday night, so we got to do a mini jam -- and he gave me a preview of the Mudcat CDs, too. Whadda bunch o' talent! Especially Rick F!)

Sorry I can't join you. Gotta fly back north on Thursday. But y'all have a great time.

Hi there Genie:

Back in the olden days we didn't play the month of December and the first couple of weeks of January.

Sorry I didn't get to pick with you this month but the year 2003 looks like it's going to be a rip-roaring year.

Hey, if the 16th or the 17th isn't any good, howbout the 23rd or the 24th?

Hugh

Don't reject this next weekend on my account, Hugh. I won't be back in SD till the weekend before Christmas. But Amos and Susan and Bear and the rest may well find this next weekend one of the best of the month, weather-wise.

I do look forward to Balboa sessions in 2003, though.

Given the way the weather has been for the last few days, I can't understand why so many of the Song Circle folks were so pessimistic about the prospects of outdoor jams in the late fall and winter in SD. My experience over the past 10 years or so is that if it's not raining down here, it's usually pretty warm in the afternoon.

Anyway, it looks like you're gonna have great weather for the jam. Enjoy!

So true Genie, the winter months in San Diego are very mild. We use to have a small hiatus in December due to the holidays and not to winter.

Amos, I'll contact my people and notified them of the date. I hope it's a date! (November 17, 2002) And Amos...no rain coat needed.

That's all right, man -- it's in the drycleaners anyway, suffering from a mild case of exposure... :>)
(joke, joke!)

At least we aren't in Chicago! Art Thieme reports it got so cold there one winter that an exhibitionist came up to him on the street and described himself! LOL!

Genie, I think you are running into a normal state of affairs with the song circle people. During my years with the SDFSS, I found they were pessimistic about a lot of things and you really had to light a fire under them to get anything done.

Just try to organize a campout, much less an outdoor jam.

Hey, guys, today it's so nice we could've even done an outdoor jam in Portland. It's beautiful.
