Hi Folkies! As I recall the Kingston Trio sang a song "Adelita". It was Mexican Folk song. It began: "Adelita the bugles they are calling. It's time...it's time for me to go...to the hills of Tierra Del Fuego and the glory of old Mexico". I'm not sure about the exact words, but these are close! If any of you out ther know this song...e-mail me the words...in English please! I thank you fopr your time and efforts. R. Venable

FAREWELL, ADELITA
by Jack Splittard © 1964, Highridge Music Corp.
(recorded by the Kingston Trio)

Adelita, 'tis time we remembered
That only one hour more and I must go
To the hills of Sierra Del Prado
For the glory of our Mexico

Chorus:
Oh, Adelita, promise you'll remember
The happy hours that now have long gone by.
Oh, Adelita, we'll share these tender moments
Adelita, it hurts me when you go.

Adelita, the time is here to leave you
Once again now I'll kiss away your tears
In my heart I will hold you forever
And our love, it will live throughout the years.
Chorus:

Of course that's the commercialized Trio version, which I have always loved, BTW. These selected verses from the trad. version are from Sandburg's "American Songbag", but he points out that the number of available stanzas is unlimited. These six were selected to just show a reasonable amount of connection.

ADELITA — (traditional)

TRANSLATION

Adelita's the name of the lady
Who was the mistress of all my pleasures here.
Never think I can come to forget her,
Nor to change her for any other dear.

If Adelita would take me for a husband,
If Adelita would only be my wife,
I would buy her a costume of satin
And I'd give her a taste of barracks life.

Now the trumpet to battle does call me
To fight as every valiant soldier should.
In the streets then the blood will be running,
But 'twill never see me forget thee.

If perhaps I should die in the battle,
And my poor corpse be left upon the field,
Adelita, for God's sake I pray thee
For my death thou wilt shed but one tear.

Adelita's a desperate coquette
With deep green eyes, the color of the sea,
Who drives all the men to distraction
And makes them all weep bitterly.

Should Adelita run off with another,
I'd trail her always, forever, near and far,
Both in airplanes and ships of the navy,
And on land in a military train.

Adelita, pretty simple to recall these lyrics. I enjoy this Song everytime....But here is a very old song that my deceased grandfather would constantly croon, I am searching for the name of the song in which I know but a few lines of, anyone that could help me come to closure in this request I would be so greatful (it starts like this)

Este noche Tiburcio Atanacio me vienieron correndo avisar,
Que el Papa y Mama de mi prieta, se vienieron de el capital.

Pero ellos no me quieren por pobre, nomas de pieder y gastar...

I have the completed song on video tape with my Grandpa singing it, but no one seems to remember the title, any response is once again appreciated.

La Adelita (Adelita) was a song of the revolutionaries of the Mexican Revolution in the 19teens. The more militant lyrics (in Espanyol) can be found at 'www.songsforteaching.com/LaAdelita.html'.

Bob Skyles and the Skyrockets did a commercial version in western swing style on the old blue Decca 5000 label in the late 30s. I think I still have the 78 somewhere, if it hasn't broken. The Skyles version is called "Goodbye, Adelita, Goodbye," and this was part of the chorus. (Something like:

"And my prayer is to hold you and never
Say goodbye, Adelita, goodbye." Pronounced "A-de-lay-ta" on the record, IIRC.)

Haven't played the record or attempted the song myself in close to 30 years but I think the lyrics are non-specific going off to war, hope I come back to you, stuff.

("If I never return to you, my darling,
And the fate of battle says that I must die,
With your name on my lips I'll be praying,
Goodbye, Adelita, goodbye."

That sounds pretty familiar and I know I didn't write it myself.)

The Tehuantepec revolutionary song, and the popular Mexican shortened version by Luis Martz, are in El Mariachi, different lyrics from thise posted by Tiger: Adelita

Guest Allniters, where did your grandfather come from? If Mexico, go through the list at El Mariachi- you might be lucky:

Thank you for the response, he was born in Panindicuaro Michoacan Mexico 1910; a very small ranch...now the name has changed to San Carlos. Thanks once again I will check into it. Allniters@aol.com

I am looking for the lyrics to a different version of the song 'Adelita.' It comes from a cassette called Somos Indios, and has some really great stuff on it. I hope to find these lyrics in lieu of transcribing them all myself.
