Has anyone in the states seen that commercial that blames terrorism on drug users? 'If you've used drugs, you've contributed to funding terrorism.' Talk about exploiting a tragedy to further an agenda. Why not be fair and put out a similar commercial aimed at people that drive cars? Am I missing something here?

I gather that the amount of opium growing in Afghanistan has increased considerably with the Taliban gone.

What's the problem? You don't like the criticism of drug use? Or you don't like criticism of terrorism?

Now personally, I think drugs should be legalized, but until they are, you support every scumbag from organized crime down to the dealer on the corner. You can like it, or not like it, but you should know it.

I don't like the automatic equation that using drugs makes you a terrorist supporter. I don't use drugs either, but I do drive a car. It's possible that some of the money I spend on gas has been funneled into terrorist hands.

Bottom line, terrorists get their money from many sources, not excluding the U.S. Government. As I said before, I think the commercial is exploiting a tragedy to further someone's agenda (The War On Drugs).

...or you can grow your damn own, or get it from someone who does.

Most of 'em are just farmers and gardeners.

Speaking of scumbags, here's some info on patriotic heroes of the War on Drugs.

The so-called war on drugs had practically run out of steam, I think it and the "War on Terrorism" need each other. I don't trust Shrub and his handlers to run either. He's doing a fine job on his War On Climate, though.

How many heroin farmers do you know? I know we had an apartment building burned down and two children severely injured by a couple of methamphatemine farmers in Denver recently. Several people were also killed in the crossfire between two competing groups of crack farmers.

You and I know reefer is not the real problem, nor is it the target.

NPR had an excellent commentary about the ad campaign by Alicia Montgomery this week - you can listen to the sound file by clicking here.

In it, she describes growing up in an inner city neighborhood where it is now too dangerous to allow children out to play. She now lives in the suburbs, and her suburban friends who use recreational cocaine or other drugs make no connection between their behavior and the downtown drug wars that kill and maim innocent civilians in order to make drugs available for their "harmless" recreation.

She would like to see the ad campaign focus on the terrorism and violence that the drug trade supports here at home, but since its victims are just inner city poor people instead of New York financial district elite, it probably won't matter as much to the middle-class users at whom the campaign is aimed...

The ad campaign makes the valid point that illegal drug use has consequences that go beyond its effect on the individual user. We can debate until we're blue in the face about whether recreational pharmaceuticals should be illegal, but as long as they are, those who purchase them are complicit in the crimes committed to make the drugs available, and the crimes supported by the profits of the trade.

This is one reason why I feel that the US government's emphasis on punishing producer countries without supporting drug treatment programs for the end users here in our own country is a lopsided and self-defeating policy.

absolutely drug use (excepting home grown mj) supports all sorts of horrid activities..including terrorism. It destroys countries, destroys families, farms...good for whoever put the commercial together. mg

You do coke, you get a "treatment program". You do crack, you get hard time.
Same drug, different form.
So why the disparity in sentencing?
Cocaine is the drug of the affluent and most crack users are inner-city poor. The War on Drugs is an expensive joke. We have spent BILLIONS of dollars and the street price of cocaine has actually gone down over the last ten years.
It's just another Government Beaurocracy with a life of its own, whose principal job is to ensure its own existance.

Troll - Right on!

Hey, people, if your taxes help to fund the CIA, then you are indirectly funding terrorism in a variety of unfortunate places around this world.

There's nothing new about that. We all end up indirectly funding a variety of things we don't believe in or agree with. It's inevitable.

There are far more relevant personal reasons not to buy drugs than to worry about whether you're supporting terrorism by so doing! LOL!

This is just more of the typical silly propaganda that a cynical system uses when it's pursuing some clandestine agenda and moulding public opinion to support it.

Right On, Troll and Little Hawk. This is just a smoke screen to cover the fact that the national agenda is and has been for the last 10 years to lock up as many poor inner city folks as the "system" can. 1 million in 1992, 2 million today. At that rate of increase, make it 3 million by the time most of the Baby Boomers will start drawing Social Security, if there is a dime left after the $42,000 per inmate comes out of the various treasuries.

The only reason recreational drug use supports criminals is that recreational drug use is illegal. However, the relation between recreational drug use and terrorism is a LOT more tenuous than that between gas (for cars) and terrorism!

A cogent argument could be made that the form of the US War on Drugs with its emphasis on criminalization and interdiction of drug traffic and scant effort to treatment has done more to support terrorists than the activity described in the commercials. It has resulted in hugely inflated prices for drugs making the profit margin extremely attractive to various criminal elements including terrorist organizations
