Just a note to let any catters who are near Framingham Mass. know that Rick Fielding will be opening for Tom Paxton on Saturday night, March 2nd. The venue is the Uncommon Coffee House, and their phone number is 508-875-3318.

You don't have to wear your MC buttons, but if you do drop by, please say hello.

On another topic, Rick's description of our adventure (with Harvey A.) at the Thai restaurant, in the 'music spam' thread seems to be HIGHLY decorated! They didn't blow up the restaurant, but the soup WAS very hot!

Tom Paxton is supposed to be here in Ft Worth on the 9th of this month. Any reason why Rick can't hitch a ride down to Texas? BBQ awaits his arrival.

I'm going to make sure the folks running the coffeehouse know I came primarily to hear Rick. Tom Paxton is wonderful, and I've never seen him in concert before, but he plays a lot around here. Rick's US gigs seem as rare as hen's teeth. I'm looking forward to this.

Anybody have any interesting ideas for heckling?

Hi. Having some fun checking out framingham with our kind hosts. Just discovered that Garnet R. is playing 'cross town tonight. Gonna try and hook up with him tomorrow for for a howdy and coffee. Just saw the venue...looks great, and I think we got a sell-out.

Heather misses the cats though.

Er, I have other excuses for not being at the Press Room.

I just got home from the concert a little while ago, and it was wonderful. The only Mudcatters present (besides Rick and Heather, of course) were DebC and me. Rick only did about 5 or 6 songs and got a standing ovation and encore - just about blew everyone away. Tom was pretty good, too. He did his song about September 11th about "the firemen pounding up the stairs while we were running down." Powerful song.

A couple of other things - the concert was sold out. It was that it was a good singing crowd, and the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. Like I mentioned, the only non-Fielding I knew there was Deb, although a couple of faces looked familiar. I felt like I was sitting among friends.

Tom had a fellow with him playing guitar and singing harmonies - Geoff ________ (Or Jeff. Can't remember his last name, and I apologise. Hopefully someone else will supply it, as well as the correct spelling of his first name.) Tom asked him to do his cat song. This was one of the funniest I'd heard, and was the from the viewpoint of a somewhat snarky cat lover. Started out with the fact that cats gain wait in direct proportion to their asleepness. Mentioned cats staring at things that aren't there. Mentioned that they made great hats. Other than this song, he spent the evening singing harmonies and weaving in his tasty high-note guitar playing. We could barely hear him during the first set, but the Sound Guy sorted it out by the second, longer set.

Rick's set was short. I still would love to hear a full length program. Tom invited him up to play on a couple of songs later in the evening. The rich layers of guitar work sounded great, with Tom singing and fingerpicking chords, Geoff on top with the high notes, and "Mr Bass Run Fielding" on the bottom.

The organisers of the Uncommon Coffehouse, Anne and Michael, did a fantastic job. It was a two-hour drive for me, and I'd gladly do it again.

That is Geoff Bartley, a fantastic guitar player, songwriter and musician. Geoff's playing can be heard on "the Long Grey Line" by a certain female singer who we won't mention.

Geoff's cat song was written after he got a kitten a few months ago. Geoff is a cat lover, which makes the song even funnier.

Geoff runs an open mic on Monday nights and a Bluegrass jam on Tuesday nights at the Cantab Lounge in Cambridge, MA, USA (needed to sort that out for our friends across the pond. If you are in the area, check these out. They are really a lot of fun.

Back home again. Yup, t'was a fun evening all around. Tom told us a great story about his daughter approaching a singer in Scotland, and proudly saying "My dad wrote that" (Last thing on my mind), and the singer pauses a bit and says "Och, no lassie, that's an ould Scots love song". She insisted, until he said, "well who IS yer father then?" "Tom Paxton...." "Hmmmmm", he thinks for a bit, and then says "well, I guess it's possible....He MIGHT have written it"! Guess Tom is REALLY part of the 'folk tradition', now that his songs have 'become' traditional, ha ha!

Great to see Deb C and jeri (all dolled up in leather and lace!)

Cheers

Rick

Yes, it was an excuse to get dressed up, and there were no cameras in sight. Oh well - may do it again next year sometime.

Deb, thanks. (At least I managed to spell his first name right.) Add me to the list of those who'd like to see Geoff record that song.

I think Deb means The Long Grey Line here at Folk Legacy.

Actually, this might be a good topic for a thread..."The cost of touring". Lemme think about it. By the way, one of the high points of my little jaunt down to Mass. was discovering Geoff Bartlett. Wonderful musician, just finished playing two albums he gave me for the radio. This guy is GOOD.

Jeri MUST wear the leather and lace!!! OH MY........that would insure a helluva turnout..........LOL...........Mick ducks and runs for cover

Jed, just let me know when yer playin' Fall River again. (hehehe..) Maybe Rick can make me a hand-tooled bustier.
Mick, I'll wear leather & lace, and you wear the thong, preferably sans-potato. Now we just have to find something for Jed to wear...or perhaps not. (Jed I really hope you can make it this year. It wouldn't be the same without you, or without watching both of the Beef Bros together.)

Rick, sorry about swiping your thread.
I'm still amazed at the overwhelming reaction Rick got from the crowd. Mind you, I know he's good, but he's my friend, and sometimes it's easy to overestimate the quality of a friend's work. When I turned around and saw various people spontaneously rising (and it wasn't a chunk of people at first, it was various individuals doing it on their own) I felt elated. I felt proud of him, because he deserves the recognition, and I felt proud to know him. I look forward to his next visit, and I'll gladly drive a couple of hours to get there! And Rick, you know this, but the more people who hear you, the more people will WANT to hear you. Today, Framingham, tomorrow, the world!

Let me tell you, folks, Michael Conley, who runs the venue, gave us a call this morning to rave about Rick's set. I was pleased to learn that Rick did some of the songs from his Folk-Legacy CD, and also a couple from his new Borealis release. Yeah, old Fingers Fielding raised a real ruckus up there. Came back, after his closer ("If Jesus Was a Picker") and the standing ovation, to bring the house down again with "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down." Not bad for a shy, retiring Canadian.

Then Deb C called to add some delighted raving of her own. We got the full report. Hey, Rick! Ya done good! Wish we could have been there to add some whiskey tenor harmony, although I'm told that the audience supplied all the harmony you could have asked for.

See you down this way again, I hope, and soon!

Sandy

Hey Rick, it seems to me that the next time you go to Framingham, we can work out a great playbill. We will have Paxton open for The Beef Brothers, and then we will warm 'em up for you. They will be raving lunatics by the time you get on stage. And just in case you start feeling like a "Giant in Folk Music circles", Jed and I will stand behind you and show them that you aren't. Great revues.........couldn't happen to a nicer guy. All this AND you have Heather. Jest don't git no better, bubba!!!

And they even had a Shy, retiring Canadian on the bill. Why has nobody mentioned him until now?

I've seen Rick in Toronto a few times. I think the thing that amazes me most is his versatility. Folk, Blues, Bluegrass played on various stringed instruments. They are all excellent.

It's nice to see he was so well received in Framingham, but it certainly isn't a surprise.

Framingham Massachusetts is an interesting suburban town, a few miles west of Boston. It had, at one point, the dubious distinction of being the biggest town in the US. That is, it had the largest population (about 140K) to use a 'township' government; town meeting, selectmen - no mayor, no full time admin.

Sounds like they got a great show from Rick and Tom. I'm not surprised they packed the place ... there always was a good music scene in that region.

Hi Jed,

Email me about this....I might be able to help. I was at that concert, BTW and the sound was not that great, but Rick was spectacular. he got a standing O that evening and the audience fell in love with him.

Geoff Bartley (you must know him, being from MA originally) played on my solo CD The Long Grey Line. Quite an amzing guitar player.
