My mum used to sing this song which we all called One Saturday night in the bar room. She didn't know all of the lyrics even then and now I've forgotten more. It's about a gospel singer and Jesus appearing. I've searched Saturday, bar and Jesus with not luck. Has anyone else heard this song? Thanks

Is this possibly a version of Almost Persuaded. I only know pieces of a parody which goes:

One night all alone in a bar room, I met a girl with a pint in her purse,

This is a country tune with a slow waltz beat.

Thanks John, but this song is more about repentance:-)..it goes like this...."One Saturday night in the bar room. A gospel singer walked in and bravely she read from the Bible and begged us to turn from our sin." She gets heckled by one of the patrons and finally a stranger speaks. It turns out that the stranger is Jesus. The more I think about it, it might be called "When Jesus appeared in the Bar Room." Does this help anyone?

It is amazing that this question was asked in 1998 and posted this month. I too have been looking for this song. My 87 year old grandmother sung it for me a couple of months ago. Yesterday, she sang it again this time to her daughter. It is a wonderful song about God's forgiving grace.

Like Paul Burke, I immediately spotted the like to "When Father Papered the Parlour".

Unlike him, I couldn't generate a spiffy set of lyrics for this masterpiece. His version blows the original out of the water.

I believe Eddy Arnold recorded this song many, many, moons ago. Last time I heard it, I was about 9 or 10 at a friends house. I'm 64 now. The Eddy Arnold recording is no doubt very rare. Good Luck.

George Davis sings it on his Folkways album, When Kentucky Had No Union Men. Porter Wagoner also recorded it, and maybe Kitty Wells. At least one singer recorded it as "God's Wonderful Way."

I've been trying-- without success-- to buy this song on i-Tunes for 99 cents (problem with password, for some reason).   Sounds like a good one.

But it seems that if you take all the verses posted by Guest of 14 Jan 2013 through "for no one had seen him before", then take the verses posted by Jim Dixon starting with "Oh, listen to me all you people", you will have the whole song.

And since the melody remains the same for every verse, you can get that melody just from the sample they allow you to hear on i-Tunes.

The irony of all this is of course I'd be glad to buy the song outright--but Apple is preventing me.

On second thought, it looks like the thing to do is take Jim's verses 1 through 4, put Guest's verses "One of the others..." and "You're just a bum.." in as verses 5 and 6, then return to Jim's version for verses 7 through 11.

A few Websites gave the title of the Porter Wagoner recording as "God's Wonderful Way," but I couldn't find the Wagoner recording. George Davic called it "Jesus Appeared in a Barroom." You can find his Smithsonian Folkways recording on Spotify. Here are the lyrics from the Folkways recording. The album doesn't clearly identify Davis as the songwriter, but the Harry Fox Agency clearly identifies the song as written by George Davis. HOWEVER, harry Fox Agency lists a song titled "God's Wonderful Way," written by "Richards, Austine" and recorded by Porter Wagoner.

Several of "those" lyrics sites have lyrics for the Porter Wagoner recording. You can tell they all come from the same original source because they all have, "and bravely she red from the Bible." Here's a cleaned-up rendition of those lyrics. I couldn't find the recording.

Only problem I can see with these Wagoner lyrics, Joe, is that "upon" is one word. And it should probably be "A stranger who was passing by", not, "The stranger".    Oh yes, and it's got to be "your staff and your rock", as it is in the George Davis recording (is now and ever shall be).

There don't seem to be any problems with the Davis lyrics.

This song was in the late 40's or early 50" but i dont know for sure
who ang it.I've wondered about that a lot.I was thinking it was Porter
Wagoner boe it had a "talking part in it" and he did lot of talking songs. I was 18 wheb i heard it and now im 77.Bobby
