Speaking as a real mudcatter and one of the "long-term" members of this community, I would like to take issue with those who seek to lavish praise on these threads.

I would have written in under my own name, but having seen the sarcastic treatment doled out to poor Joe Offer yesterday I choose to remain anonymous for reasons which should be obvious.

These threads contain "humour" which is low, vicious, nasty, spiteful, slanderous, libellous, un-Godly, vacuous, cheap and crude. There is a thread of violence and unpleasantness which permeates the threads which causes me to back off in horror. The language used in some of the posts is foul and, quite frankly, unneccessary.

If this is what passes for "humour" in Northern Ireland, then it's little wonder that this part of the "little bit of heaven fallen from the sky" is so benighted.

No doubt I'll come in for criticism for having taken this stand, but unless we in the silent majority speak out, then the Mudcat will go the way of every other 21st Century institution!

If Real Mucdcatter is sincere, then he/she has missed the whole satirical bent of these most gloriously classic threads, I think they expose wonderfully the whole question of the stances of the various partys in NI . and give a refreshingly Satirical view of the various extremist views, These have been the most consistently funny ( to the pointof incontinence) threads in the Mudcat, right up there with the Reg Boys et al of Spaw and that is praise indeed. I too read the first few posts and thought , Uh Oh!! Flame war,(and I avoid threads that are sectarian anyway) then the tone of the first brilliant satirical song sank in, and then alison, suggested I come back and read on asit was geetting very funny, So Thank you Ali, and thanks to the wonderfully creative folks that have made these threads such a Joy.. thank you!! thank You, Yez are the Boillix!!

Come on, now, Micca!

The threads are a travesty.

What relation do they bear to Child, to Captain O'Neill, to Lomax and Lomax, to Bunting, to Breathnach, to Sharp? To those proud stalwarts of the folk movement who gave their lives for the music they loved to collect and perform?

The "satirists" in the Drumcree threads wouldn't know a hop jig from a five-hand reel or a strathspey from a schottische. For this reason you are wrong to condone their scurrilous behaviour. I feel as if my temple has been ransacked by the barbarian hordes.

May God have pity on us all!

Funny as I think the threads are, I suffer no delusions as to the "balance" of the parody as to the Troubles. I do find this to be a hilarious parody of the Irish and Irish republicans by someone who claims to be a unionist. Just because a few of the more notorious loyalist characters (Paisley, Sammy Wilson, et al) are included for color and contrast, doesn't make it balanced. Anyone who believes this is a parody of all parties in the north is mistaken.

But that said, I really don't want to diminish the work someone put into it, because it is a very good parody. Now if they could parody the British in general, and British folkies in particular half as well, I'd be a true admirer. As it is, I got a good laugh.

From what I gawr, there are several people contributin' to this thread. I have a fairly good guess of who's chippin' in, and I think it's good-natured (in the Norn Iron sense) "slegging" and nat intended to be vitriolic. Surely it isn't supposed to be a parody of "all parties in the north" - it's just rippin' the piss out of anyone and everyone. It's a kick up the hole for everyone who gets their knickers in a twist, but most of all it's done as a laugh.

I am posting this because of the tone of the "Real Mudcatter" post. I had mentioned to Alison that I found much of this thread objectionable and hence I was following my own advice given to others who didn't like the Republican oriented threads, which is simply stay out of threads that one doesn't like. But because of that post above, I feel the need to say publicly that I didn't post it, even though I share most of that posters feelings. I don't know why you would post anon, Real Mudcatter. One should never be afraid to take a stand and be known for doing it.

BUT, Real Mudcatter, I think you were in error for posting for one simple reason. This isn't a discussion thread. If it were a thread discussing the events at Drumcree, or the problems in the north of Ireland, then I would probably join the fray and have a rousing discussion. But this is a thread where folks of various persuasion have chosen to parody and satirize various other folks. You and I, and others I am sure find it distasteful. Just as some of these folks find some of our views objectionable. Given that the armament here is words and you feel a need to engage, why not write a parody or satirical lyric taking another view. I gave serious consideration to posting Micca's "The Stash My Father Scored".

This one ain't ours, bro. Give the same courtesy that you expect when we are discussing rebel songs, or our positions on the troubles, etc.

Mick

Let me just say that I admit to playing many of the characters being parodied in these threads. Its been a great laugh and I think there is some wonderful stuff there. For those of you who have taken exception, take a day off you're taking life way too seriously. I suspect that most of the contributors to the threads are people who either lived for a long time in Northern Ireland or currently live there. I also suspect that those who have taken exception have'nt or don't. I grew up there I lived through the worst of the troubles, in the markets area of Belfast. I've stood by more graves than is probably healthy for a person. When times were rough it was humour that got us through. Real Mudcatter put your big brush away your painting us all from the same pot and your assuming way too much. If you don't get the humour that doesn't mean that it isn't funny. Bottom line I think we're allowed to laugh at ourselves we've come through a whole lot and maybe there are happier days ahead for us. Den

I had not much time the last week to read many threads but I never forgot to open the Drumcree threads. It was not just the song parodies I laughed about but also the tiny details (depercussionalisation of Ireland, Continuity Mudcat, Apron's mason, no fence no Alliance,...). When Blair, Flanagan or whoever are 'cited' the tone of the announcement is true to the person 'cited' as far as I can tell. And in top of all that, the threads were never far from the music I love.

Whoever write(s) all that often brilliant nonsense is not a dissenting loyalist making fun of Irish musicians. They know what they write about too close for that. It is an inside job very well done. I love it.

as Den, Ard & Fib have pointed out.... often our way to cope with the things that were part and parcel of our everyday lives was to use humour..... now I know that humour doesn't always carry well.... and I know that some of the derogatory terms we us to refer to each other can be offensive to some.....

but its how we got through

I wish to God it were a radio show or a CD, I'd buy copies for all my Norn Iron pals here in the U.S. who (like me) can laugh at themselves and the situation at home. The perpetrators of this bit of brilliance really know their music and the musicians, and it shows. I was laughing like I haven't done since reading Puckoon. From a Falls Road Taig.

Boy!!.............Ever had one of those threads where you jumped in with the best of intentions, didn't quite do your homework well enough, and ended up down the feckin pisshole without a rope to crawl out with?? As the comedian said "I feel like the world is full of tuxedos and I am a pair of brown shoes".

Primarily because of people like The Fair One and Seamus, I went back and reread the whole of the threads. What happened was I read the first post, and it obviously wasn't my cuppa. Alison sent me a link to the Portadown News and I laughed like hell. My world being what it is, I haven't had time to do much more than jump in here and there, and I saw references to "taigs" and such and just decided that I didn't belong in this one as I find the term offensive.   I made an incorrect assumption. I though about posting, but thought it better to just not go into things that I didn't care for, as I have counseled others to do so many times. Fast forward to seeing a post from someone who called him/herself "Real Mudcatter". I read it, make some incorrect assumptions about the thread, and post. The intent of the post was to say that whether or not you agree with the positions, stay out of it. Go on to another. I now realize that I made that in a way that had an unintentioned tone to it. It is so difficult to transmit context here. I apologize for the tone of it to folks that live there. And as I said I have now reread the whole thing, find it very funny in the main, there are still things in it that I don't care for, but I understand the stir.

And SVV, could you give this poor lad a bit of notice before you post one like that. I pissed meself right here in the office............LOL. Poke accepted, sackcloth and ashes worn, now fuck off, the lot of you...............LOL.

I think now that this is wrapping up a bit, I'll make a comment.

BRILLIANT WORK!!!

Shortly after these miraculous threads started, I began reading.....at first with some trepidation because I've seen some efforts go so far awry in the past, but this never did. To quote young Mr. Grace, "You've all done very well."
I have laughed harder at some of this than I have in ages and some of it frankly and sadly went over my American head. But even in that came learning.......And I have made no comment when these were running because the one thing I have learned over the years is never to interupt real genius at work! You have all topped the absolute best that Mudcat has ever seen and when Seamus says it should be a radio play, he's right....it should, but I feel blessed to a part of a community that has members capable of producing such great work.
Many Thanks.

And to my Secret Santa partner, Fibula Mattock, who played such a role in this work, I will run a copy of this and fold it into that wonderful book which you presented me for Christmas. One day someone else will find it and wonder what it's all about, but I think I'll add one word to the outside of the copy ..... Understanding

Peace to you all.

Spaw

Right people its time to come clean...who were yez and spaw yer a good guy an all that but maybe your choice of Mr. Grace was...I suppose probably not right...context wise...were so far removed from the Grace Bros, PBS view of anything outside your borders that well...you gotta come over and see for yourself. Let us know when you're coming and I'm sure there are many people here who will welcome you into their homes with a heart and a hand. Mine included, and I mean that.

The curtain falls (and I know I'm setting myself up for a severe sleggin') on the Drumcree threads but I think it would be nice to know who participated. I think I know who some of you are.

Yeah I know Den but that damn line was stuck in my mind!!! I couldn't help but feel like some dumbass who is so overcome that he doesn't know what to say because any words are so lame.....So he just goes around patting everyone on the back with some canned line of approval. So for y'all the image was piss poor I know, but for me it was about accurate.......I just feel like an idiot trying to come up with something suitable to say. Anyway......whatever words and images of heartiest approval you may wish to use, just pretend I'm saying them.!!

God save us, the oul masked Tenor never died. Well i`m afraid he is about to meet his end on future postings to the Mudcat. The man himself, MAX, de Boss, has decreed that GUESTS have had their fling and brilliant THREADS like the Drumcree Oscar winner will be no more. If McGrath would enlighten me as to how I can get in touch with his Stratford friends, who are organising to send donations, I will contribute. But what a pity to eliminate such Threads as Drumcree, more power to your elbow GUEST and stay with us, its a good Site the Mudcat, but, people like you tend to blow away a lot of the Cobwebs. Just read all of it.

Killicomaine; Buckie; The Ashburn on a Sunday night.
Ahhhhh... those were the days.....

And apparently I play The Kesh in Eminor - it's all fairly close to home.

But I'll tell you this: I would much prefer to see an 'ecumenical' Megasession at Drumcree than the current cacophony that generally eminates from those parts.

Hello wee darlin!

Sorry I missed all of this, and seeing some of the references, I knew that at least a few of the Lurgan 'brigade' were in on it. The intimacy of knowledge with which the 'Drumcree' threads were written, could not be learned, and the non native posters could be spotted a mile away.

I Read the 'Made it to Belfast' thread, and the parodying of all the 32 counties in song would be a great move altogether, and I'll figure out some sort of contribution.

Difficult counties, though, could well include, Longford, Westmeath, and Carlow. Of the Ulster ones, one could find Cavan and Monaghan particularly interesting places to pour the creative salivical juices over.

I'll get back to you on this....

Apart from that, everything's fine; hope you and yours are all well, and congratulations again to everyone who made a Drumcree thread a pleasure to open.

B.

I've had 'In The Town Of Ballybay' involuntarily running around in my head for the past number of days (probably a Tommy Makem thing!)...so...

Well....
I used to be a fella that was happy and go lucky
Until that fateful night when I necked a load o' Buckie
I used to like the vodkey, with a healthy dose of turpentine
But O, the mix of Benylin
in Buckfast Tonic Wine

And with me ring a ding a dong,
Me ring a ding a daddy O.
A ring a ding a dong,
first The Stables, then McMullan's O

Forgive me.. it's late, but I couldn't resist a brainstorm!!

Spaw, yer a sweetheart - the Campsite at Drumcree thread has been one of the nicest to both read and contribute to. Fair play to the guys that began it and kept it growing (I didn't join in anonymously 'til towards the end of the first one). Maybe we can get a Norn Iron gathering going and invite Eamon Holmes to open it.

Anyone know if you can get cross-community comedy grants?

Ok, I also enjoyed participating laterly to the last half of the thread, made me laugh, and was good fun. Laughed at all the excellent parodies that came from it all.

Sorry, guilty as charged, I can't deny it. But it was a helluva giggle joining in
