Why? From the CDC Bush said mass vaccinations would cause deaths.
So do vaccinations that our children are REQUIRED to have.

The truth: There is only enough vaccine at this time for 1 in 10 Americans.
It could take 2 years to have enough for everyone.

I am reminded of too few lifeboats aboard the Titanic. "these lifeboats are unsafe, unless you are in first class..."

Interesting, isn't it, that this is called an obsolete disease? Considering that samples were kept both in the US and the Soviet Union. Why were the samples kept, hmmmm?

Why were the samples kept, hmmmm?

I seem to remember some Good Liberals taking the position that humanity had No Right to intentionally render any species extinct - even Smallpox virus.

A death from the MMR vaccine in some cases would be merciful compared to the lingering coma. At any rate this link also has at the bottom 2 more catagories; vaccines and deaths , that go beyond the personal anecdotes and deal with actuarial tables risk assesment and cost benefit analysis.

What is your point? contentious or curious.

357 deaths from small pox vaccine from 1909-1947...
At any rate there has been a well intentioned but deliberate diversion from the truth in the statement by the president to no doubt "calm concerns". He started the week with his warning of terrorist "nucular"(as he put it) devices. To end the week with an annoucement that there is no vaccine for you would be a bit nasty don't you think?

I was vaccinated against smallpox as a child (still have the scar to prove it) Now I hear that my vaccination is not effective any longer. And my question is, How can they possibly know ?

They only have several 10 and 20 year re-exposure cases to interpolate from. There appears to be some subtle but valuable protection at 10 - 20 years but nothing is known about the efficacy of 40 year old vaccines. Anyone/everyone under 18 is however completely vulnerable.

Donuel, that sure is an interesting link. We have always wondered if vaccines might have anything to do with my son's condition--seizure disorder of unknown origin, general developmental delay, severe speech delay. But it seems doubtful. He seemed pretty normal until he was vacinnated at two months, but then two-month-old babies don't do much of anything anyway. He had practically no reaction to the vaccinations, so that probably wasn't it, but still...he probably started having seizures at about 4 months, but they weren't diagnosed till he was three, apparently because they usually happened at night while he (and we) were asleep. We didn't actually see one until a few days after he had his first EEG.

By the way, he no longer has seizures or takes medication after two years on the Ketogenic Diet, but that's another story.

Is this one of those serious issues where concerned people band together and scream something must be done.

And then have nothing to add when asked what specificly should done.

It is one thing to pass around all this alarming information but somewhat irresponsible not to offer an alternative at the same time.

You are faced with the picture of a parent thinking this innoculation may harm my child, but so will this disease, what to do.

Sheesh, GUEST! It's perfectly legitimate to be concerned without being knowledgable.

The point in screaming that something must be done is to be heard by those who have the knowledge to offer or create an alternative solution.

Do you want a thousand times the protection of a smallpox vacination?

Stop Drinking,

or stop smoking

or cut down on fatty foods.

or stop worrying about smallpox.

This stuff is getting so blown out of proportion!

For once, I agree with Jack the Sailor. I think this whole thing has been blown out of porportion.

As to the number of deaths from vaccinations, if only 357 deaths from vaccination occurred in 38 years, it doesn't appear to me that it is a shocking figure, considering how many people were probably vaccinated during those years. That's less than 10 people each year.

I guess the problem is if you or your kid happens to be one of those ten people. But still, I am not in favor of not having kids vaccinated. A friend of our had a daughter who had a seizure after the standard vaccinations. Though she recovered completely and never had another, the doctor thought it was unwise to vaccinate the rest of the children (4 younger ones) due to weird family medical history. One of the younger kids contracted whooping cough, was out of school for 6 months, and took a year to fully recover. She was 6 at the time.

Another friend didn't believe in antibiotics, and so did not treat her 6-year-old for strep, since he had no symptoms but a mild sore throat. Then she sent him to play at my house, and the little monster re-infected my daughter, a friend, and me three times before we found out where it was coming from. We were all three extremely sick. We finally convinced her to get the kid treated when the doctor observed that strep could cause stuff like liver damage.

Good news. CDC now says even a 50 year old vaccination would have some benefit. Also, small pox is less contagious than the flu so any threatened outbreak has hope of containment. It takes a media splash to get the attention of some stogy doctors who need to be aware of what to look for.
