Anyone got the lyrics, learned them back in school, but obviously damaged those brain cells.(Probably went up in smoke) Any way, I'd appreciate it if somebody could help me out.

The best way to search for lyrics here is to use the search facility. (Now there's a suprise)

If you'd bothered to try it, you would have found the lyrics on this page

Nice to see there supplying electricity to caves these days, or is your pc/mac clockwork.

Sorry for disturbing you, hope you get a full nights sleep tonight.

What about these Gypsies? Who are they? Are they the same gypsies you meet in Black Jack Davy, Follow the Gypsy...anything to do with the Black Irish, the Dark Welsh, Spanish blood?

No one seems to have confirmed anything about the Spanish blood thing.

The "Gypsies" mentioned are probably the same ones as in Black Jack Davy and numerous other songs. When you look at a database under Gypsy you find many of those songs are listed as Child #200, and references are made to the other songs, in several incarnations here.

I don't understand how this fellow MacGuire is listed as the author of this song, which doesn't seem to be substantively different than the older and even the oldest forms of the song. He may have eliminated some verses, but many singers leave out verses.

Some of the best information comes from Lesley Nelson's Contemplator site

Nothing to do with Irish, Welsh or Spanish.  It isn't of Irish origin, of course, though it found its way there, and to many other places, in some of which it became Black Jack Davy.  Lots more information (and speculation) in the many previous discussions archived here, which can be found in the way Ed suggested.  The "Digitrad and Forum Search" box is the place to start looking.  Have fun -it really is worth the effort.

Malcolm
