Am looking for the lyrics to a song recorded by Frank Patterson on his Ireland in Song CD titled Maggie. The lyrics start as follows: I wander today through the hills Maggie to watch the fields we roamed. The lyrics go on to talk about when he and she were young.

I have not been able to find these lyrics on any of the Irish sites so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sheet music copies of 1866 are on the Levy collection website (Mudcat's Links), along with a reply of 1868.

I think "Maggie" is actually a Canadian song---maybe a search along that line will help.

I have heard another verse which doesn't seem to be under the clickey. Unfortunately i can't remember the first line.
............................................
Our steps are much slower than then,
Your face is a well written page, Maggie,
And time, all alone, was the pen.

They say we have outlived our time, Maggie,
As dated as songs that we've sung.
But to me, you're as fair as you were, Maggie,
When you and I were young

I think we talked about the Canadian connections some time back. The guy who wrote it (I think) is referred to by some as The Bard of Binbrook (honest!), Binbrook being somewhere south or south west ? of Hamilton, Ontario. But I think he moved to the States to make his fortune...

I love this song, but it seems I've heard at least 3 different version using the same tune. Or is it just variations of the lyrics? One starts out "The violets were scenting the woods,Maggie, displaying their charms to the breeze" Are these all the same song? Spaw? I know this is a particular favorite of yours.

My favorite version is by Sydney Devine. He has this as the last verse:

They say you were aged and grey, Maggie
And your steps are less sprightly than then
Your face is well written page, Maggie
And time alone was the pen.

They say you were aged and grey, Maggie
Your spray by the wild breakers flung
But to me you're fair as you were, Maggie
Since you and I were young (you're doin' fine!)

They say you were aged a grey, Maggie
And the trials of life nearly done!
But we'll sing, yes, let us sing of those days, Maggie
When you and I were young
When you and I were young!

As good old Sydney says "This has got to be the greatest song ever!"

Yeah jaze, it is a favorite of mine and I have run across several differing verses and/or word changes within a verse that are different from what we kind of accept as original. Its a part of the folk process at work in a way. Some of the "modifications" for lack of a better word I like and some I don't. The same thing is true with added verses. Just so we keep track of the original, its still good to make a song speak for you sometimes.

There are some things in this one that I've talked about before such as the two different lines in the first verse. I love the flow of "The creek and the creaking old mill" much better, but I've seen both lines listed as the "original."

BTW, we must be doing something wrong in the search business since there are a bunch of threads already, and the DT, and now this poster can't find it nor could the guy last month who said,"I can't find it on this site." We need to put more emphasis on the FAQ. We have a lot of newer members who can't seem to search here well either.

I'm not sure what can be done to make the Search facilities here more obvious, short of putting them in huge great coloured flashing lights.  There are times when the "DT & Forum" won't play, but even so... any ideas?

Malcolm

That's my point exactly Malcolm. The FAQ does a good job, but a lot of people don't bother to read it. Its not just the music threads either as I keep running across it in the guitar and gear threads too.

I dunno'......Maybe we DO need flashing lights and whistles and bells! Beats me.
